1 MODULE SPECIFICATION KEY FACTS Module name Knowledge, Evidence and Skills for Normal Birth Module code APM020 School School of Health Sciences Department or equivalent Division of Midwifery and Radiography UK credits 15 ECTS 7.5 Level 7 MODULE SUMMARY Module outline This module reinforces the importance of the normal birth process and supports advanced midwifery practice in the facilitation of women s choice, exploring interventions carried out by both obstetricians and midwives that research evidence now reveals can be iatrogenic. Enabling a woman to labour observed but undisturbed; recognising her individuality and the unique way in which her body functions is central midwifery practice. Aims To debate the role of the midwife as an autonomous practitioner and lead carer; and to work in partnership with women and their families. To critically evaluate service provision, promoting choice, continuity and holistic care, increasing Synergy between practice and research Content outline Background theory and introduction to normal birth Promoting normal birth Defining low risk Maternal infant attachment and baby feeding Postnatal care to promote normality The future, where now WHAT WILL I BE EXPECTED TO ACHIEVE?
