3 IPv6 Drivers for AT&T IPv4 address space exhaustion is imminent Explosive growth in IP end-points projected IANA (Internet Assigned Number Authority) exhaust Nov 11 RIR (Regional Internet Registries) future allocations in 2012 are uncertain. 6 IPv6 Program at AT&T Active participant in early IPv6 projects since IETF, 6Bone, Moonv6 Customer Trials and Vendor requirements Established multi-million dollar, multi-year program in 2006 IPv6 enable our networks, services, systems and processes. Began deployment of IPv6 target network platform in Dual Stack VPN and Managed Internet Service (MIS) Enterprise Services introduced in the US in percent of our VPN and MIS capabilities will be available worldwide on IPv6 dual-stack ports by YE IPv6 support will be introduced into other product platforms from 2010 through 2012: Managed Services, VoIP, Hosting, Security Services, Mobility and U-Verse. 9 IPv6 Challenges IPv6 Global Reachability The IPv6 Internet does not have complete global reachability to the same degree as IPv4 Will take time for the IPv6 islands to all be connected Internet Routing Table Scale Support for concurrent IPv4 and IPv6 routing will further burden routers The IPv6 table has the potential to grow much larger than IPv4 ever could IPv4/IPv6 Interworking is still a work in progress IETF still finalizing many details and vendors just beginning product development Still requires relatively large numbers of IPv4 addresses to implement Not all protocols easily translatable, especially those with embedded IP addresses Have to assume other ISPs are following similar course and implementing Interworking for their customers Page 9

10 IPv6 Challenges IPv6 is inevitable and imminent yet customers generally are not well prepared or even convinced of the need for IPv6 transition Customers must begin planning NOW IPv6 customer transition entails much more than just enabling IPv6 in IP network elements and in endpoint operating system IP stacks Potential changes in network design practices (e.g., IP address assignment, NAT/Firewall) Application dependencies Potential need for new network-service features Customers looking to their providers for support in transitioning to IPv6 Service providers and vendors are expanding their enterprise network support offerings to include IPv6 and to reach deeper into the customer networks Page 10
