1 Oxford-Murray Classics Scholarship Wadham College Scholarships (prospective graduate students) Who can apply? Any applicant to the MSt or MPhil in Greek and/or Latin Languages and Literature or Greek and/or Roman History who intends to proceed to study for a DPhil research councils, for up to four years. Continuation of the scholarship will depend on a distinction level performance in the Masters examination. Application details: The Oxford-Murray Classics Scholarship will be awarded to a student who has demonstrated excellent academic ability, who will contribute to the University s ground-breaking research, and who will go on to contribute as a leader in the field. The University contributes 40% of the funds for this scholarship, while the remaining 60% has been funded by Wadham College as the result of a generous benefaction from NR Murray. Those who wish to be considered for this scholarship should submit their Masters application to the Faculty of Classics by the January 2014 deadline. Eligible candidates who receive a university place will then automatically be considered for the Oxford-Murray Classics Scholarship by a faculty and college panel; there is no separate scholarship application process. Those wishing to be considered need not name Wadham as their first choice college; the recipient of the scholarship will receive a place at Wadham should they wish to take up the offer of funding, which is awarded on grounds of academic excellence and aptitude. Any applicant for the BCL Money available: Full University and College fees, plus normal maintenance expenses for a single postgraduate living in college accommodation (approximately 33,000 in total)

2 Application details: Thanks to the generosity of Mr William MF Wong, SC, an alumnus of Wadham, the College is offering a postgraduate scholarship for a candidate of exceptional academic merit studying for the Oxford BCL degree programme in The scholarship, which is named in honour of Jeffrey Hackney, an Emeritus Law Fellow of the College, is tenable only at Wadham College. It will be awarded on grounds of academic excellence and aptitude. If you wish to be considered for this scholarship you should submit your application for the BCL to the Faculty of Law in the ordinary way by the January 2014 deadline. There is no separate scholarship application process, and you do not need to have nominated Wadham as your first choice college. If you name a college of preference other than Wadham you will still automatically be considered for the scholarship, provided that you have indicated that you are happy to be transferred to an alternative college in order to secure funding. Following the January 2014 deadline, a Faculty panel will nominate a recipient for the scholarship, which will be conditional on them taking up the offer of a college place at Wadham. Peter Carter Law Scholarships Who can apply? Any applicant for the BCL, MJur, MPhil in Law or DPhil in Law Money available: The Peter Carter Taught Graduate Scholarship in Law (worth 12,500) is available only to those studying for the BCL or MJur. The Peter Carter Graduate Scholarship in Law (worth 10,000 per annum) is available to those studying for the BCL, MJur, MPhil in Law or DPhil in Law. Application details: The Peter Carter Law Scholarships are made available through the generosity of the PBC Trust, and the Faculty of Law, to commemorate the contributions over many years of the late Peter Carter QC to the Law Faculty and to Wadham. The scholarships are available to graduate students of exceptional academic merit embarking on the Law programmes specified above at Wadham College. They are available to law graduates of any university. If you wish to be considered for this scholarship you should submit your application for the BCL, MJur, MPhil in Law or DPhil in Law to the Faculty of Law in the ordinary way by the January 2014 deadline: there is no separate scholarship application process, and you do not need to have nominated Wadham as your first choice college. 3 Wadham-AHRC Scholarship in the Humanities Who can apply? Any applicant to a postgraduate research degree in the Humanities for which Wadham College admits students research councils, for a period of three years Application details: This scholarship is joint-funded by Wadham College and the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). Those who wish to be considered for it should submit their application to the faculty concerned by the January 2014 deadline. Eligible candidates who receive a university place will then automatically be considered for the Wadham-AHRC Scholarship by a panel convened by the Humanities Division; there is no separate scholarship application process. Those wishing to be considered need not name Wadham as their first choice college; the recipient of the scholarship will receive a place at Wadham should they wish to take up the offer of funding, which is awarded on grounds of academic excellence and aptitude. Wadham-Woodward RCUK Scholarship in the Humanities Who can apply? Any applicant to the MSc in Water Science, Policy and Management Money available: 4000 towards fees or living expenses for one year Application details: Those who wish to be considered for this scholarship should submit their application for the MSc in Water Science, Policy and Management degree by the January 2014

4 deadline. Those who receive a university place will then automatically be considered for the Water Conservators Scholarship by a faculty panel; there is no separate scholarship application process. Those wishing to be considered need not name Wadham as their first choice college; the recipient of the scholarship will receive a place at Wadham should they wish to take up the offer of funding, which is awarded on grounds of academic excellence and aptitude. The scholarship normally has a value of 4000 (GBP), to be used to defray in part University fees, College fees and/or maintenance of the Scholar during their period of study. Please note that the scholarship will not cover the entire costs of the course, and the selected candidate, like all other applicants offered places in the college, will be required to demonstrate to the college that he or she has sufficient funds to cover the additional costs. Wadham College Norwegian Scholarship Who can apply? Students or graduates of the University of Oslo, applying for any graduate course for which Wadham College admits students Money available: Full university and college fees, plus full living expenses, for one year Application details: Candidates for the Wadham College Norwegian Scholarship are nominated by the University of Oslo. Conditional on their being offered a place at the university by the relevant faculty or department and having named Wadham as their college of preference, candidates will be considered for a place at the College. Donner Canadian Foundation Law Scholarship Who can apply? Any applicant to the BCL or MJur who is ordinarily resident in Canada Money available: 20,000 towards fees or living expenses for one year Application details: We do not anticipate the Donner Canadian Foundation Scholarship being available again until the academic year. Thanks to the generosity of the Donner Canadian Foundation, and the good offices of Allan E. Gotlieb, Honorary Fellow of Wadham College, the scholarship is awarded on grounds of academic excellence and aptitude. The scholarship is to be used to defray in part University fees, College fees and/or maintenance of the Scholar during their period of study (nine months). Please note that the scholarship will not cover the full cost for the BCL or MJur, and the selected candidate, like all other applicants offered places in the college, will be required to demonstrate to the college that they have sufficient funds to cover the additional costs.

5 The Philip Wright Scholarship for former Manchester Grammar School students Who can apply? Any graduate student who is a former student of Manchester Grammar School Money available: Full fees and living expenses of 8000 or, for those who succeed in securing funding from other sources (i.e. research councils), full payment of college fees Application details: We do not anticipate the Philip Wright Scholarship being available again until the academic year. The Philip Wright Scholarship is funded by income from the Philip Wright Fund, a trust fund established in 1874 for the award of scholarships and grants to students of Wadham College, subject to the stipulation that the recipient of any award must be an ex-student of the Manchester Grammar School. The college normally offers a scholarship tenable for one year in the first instance and renewable, within the same course of study, for a two further years. Successful applicants progressing from a graduate taught to a graduate research course cannot carry over the scholarship but are encouraged to re-apply on transfer. All applicants must also apply to the appropriate funding bodies (eg ESRC, AHRC) and if the successful applicant receives another studentship, such as from one of the UK funding councils, a reduced scholarship equivalent to the standard college fee (currently 2,532) is offered. Otherwise, the scholarship pays the equivalent of standard home University and College fees (up to a maximum of 10,000) and a maintenance grant of 8,000 a year. Any graduate student who wishes to play a role in the musical life of the college Money available: 2200 per annum towards fees or living expenses Application details: We do not anticipate the John Brookman Scholarship being available again until the academic year. The John Brookman Scholarship was endowed by the late E. W. M. Brookman, an old member of the College, in memory of his son, John Meredith Brookman ( ). The scholarship is open to those who have applied to read for a higher degree in the University of Oxford in any subject, and who as John Brookman Scholar will participate in the musical life of the College.
