Vehicle Policy All Drivers must satisfy themselves that their vehicle is fully safe and legal, as it is the driver who is held responsible for any infringement of traffic law. Appointed staff and drivers are reminded that the following is illegal and may lead to prosecution of the driver. broken wing mirrors cracked windows any faulty lights horn not working windscreen wipers not working windscreen washer not working door handles not in operation properly allowing no exit from the inside of rear compartment, or doors not secure Incorrect tyre pressure, damaged tyres, worn tyres Any leak of petrol Seat belts not working, or not being used by front seat passengers
Driver s responsibilities All Nansen Highland drivers must ensure the following: Observe the legally set speed limits on all roads. Not take any alcoholic drink eight hours before or, whilst driving the vehicle, and not to drive whilst under the influence of any drugs or medicine that may impair driving ability. It is the driver s responsibility to inform management of any drugs taking that may impair their abilities. Failure to do so may lead to disciplinary action. Ensure that there is NO SMOKING in any of Nansen s minibuses at any time, whether the vehicle is moving or stationary. It s also against the law! Ensure that the vehicle is never overloaded and never carries more than the maximum numbers of passengers that it is designed to carry. Ensure that all passengers wear seat belts.
Ensure that the vehicle is in good working order as defined in the Highway Code. See Vehicle Condition Checks above. Report ANY accidents or damage to the vehicle, however minor, to management as soon as possible. Close and secure all windows, and lock all doors whenever the vehicle is left unattended. Do not lock rear or side doors when passengers are being carried in the rear. Drive carefully Check condition, lights and safety of any trailer fitted. Accident Procedures In the event of an accident involving one of the Nansen Highland vehicles, the driver must: 1. Stop 2. Find out if any damage has been done, either to our vehicle or to a third party's property. If it seems that even the slightest damage has been done then : 3. Take a note of :
o Date and time o Registration number of the other vehicle o Name and address of the owner of the vehicle (if it is different from the driver) 4. Insurance company and, if possible, policy number covering the other vehicle 5. Names of any independent witnesses, especially if damage to either vehicle is other than slight. 6. Number and station of any policemen/women attending. 7. Note the details of the accident and the location. Make a quick sketch if possible. 8. Note speed limit in force. 9. Note if vehicle lights in use. The director must be informed immediately of any accident. An Accident Report form will be sent to the driver for completion and immediate return to HQ.
Vehicle breakdown procedures Action points if a breakdown occurs: 1. Alert other road users to the hazard you may be causing post lookouts, hazard warning signs, lights, etc. 2. No passengers to be in the vehicle when changing a wheel. 3. Alert base of any possible delay and arrange alternative transport if necessary. 4. Notify Recovery Service of correct location of breakdown. 5. Notify Police if vehicle has to be left and leave keys with responsible person but available for Recovery Service. All drivers are responsible for driving in a safe and considerate fashion and in a way that does not lead to undo wear and tear on vehicles. Under Health and Safety legislation, a vehicle is classified as "work premises" and all passengers have a responsibility to behave safely when in one.
