Thirty Years of Creating Leaders ANNUAL REPORT

mission Prep for Prep is a long-term investment strategy to develop the leadership potential of able young people from segments of society grossly under-represented in the leadership pool from which all of our major institutions draw. By expanding the nation s leadership resources, we aim to impact indirectly on a set of inter-related problems that threaten to rend our society. The Prep Community includes over 3,600 students and alumni.

Message from the Chief Executive Dear Friends: What does Prep for Prep look like at 30? It is a vital, successful, and forward-thinking organization that is making a difference in the world at large and in the lives of promising young people. The Prep Community now boasts more than 3,600 young men and women. As you will see in the following pages, the long-term investment we have made in the leadership potential of these remarkable individuals has borne a rich harvest: Today, Prep alumni are lawyers and doctors, educators and activists, artists and writers. Despite an average age of only 29, young people. Moreover, the expansion of our highly successful boarding school program, PREP 9, continued apace. At the start of summer 2008, we enrolled 82 students in PREP 9 classes, a 37% increase over the typical number we have accepted annually. FY 08 also marked an important transition in the organization s leadership. After six years of remarkable dedication as President of the Board of Trustees, Anne Gilchrist Hall passed that title on to longtime Trustee Scott Bok. Prep is the better organization in every way thanks to Annie s guidance, and we look forward to Scott s service going forward. His perspective as CEO of Greenhill & Co., a parent at Chapin and Allen- Stevenson, and as a Trustee of Chapin and the University Prep for Prep s proven ability to identify talented children of color in overlooked corners of the city and prepare them for academic success and a lifetime of leadership is more essential than ever. they are emerging leaders in virtually every imaginable field in the public and private sectors. As a nation and a society, we are all richer for their accomplishments. Prep for Prep s proven ability to identify talented children of color in overlooked corners of the city and prepare them for academic success and a lifetime of leadership is more essential than ever. We have inspired thousands of our best and brightest young people to take advantage of educational opportunities at first-rate schools. Prep s remarkable story with its Horatio Alger overtones resonates deeply with those of us who believe abundant talent resides in every quarter of society. In our 30th year, Prep s impact is growing, nationally and even internationally. Smart Connections, our new initiative to share Prep s best practices with like-minded organizations and social entrepreneurs, was front and center during FY 08. In May, we hosted our first Smart Connections conference with over 200 leading educators and nonprofit executives from across the country and around the world in attendance. Keynote speakers included Newark Mayor Cory Booker, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, and Ford Foundation President Luis Ubiñas. (See page 22 for more.) Through this new initiative, we are now able to impact geometrically more of Pennsylvania will be invaluable. Happily, John L. Vogelstein will continue at the helm as Chairman. In FY 08, individual, corporate, foundation, and alumni funders generously contributed over $11.7 million to fuel Prep s important work. Again this year, our Trustees led the way, directly giving over half that amount. The 2008 Lilac Ball, honoring Laurence D. Fink, Chairman and CEO of BLACKROCK, Inc., netted more than $3.4 million, making it one of the most successful events in our history. Prep has come a long way from that day in 1978 when our first 25 students gathered at Trinity School and embarked on a journey that would transform their lives and ultimately the society around them. On our 30th anniversary, allow me to thank you for the profound difference you make possible through your support. With gratitude, Aileen C. Hefferren PREP FOR PREP ANNUAL REPORT

pfp_ar_08 10/27/08 10:16 AM Page 25 In order to better leverage its extraordinary track record, Prep for Prep launched Smart Connections in This initiative aims to continue, in a more formal and expansive fashion, Prep s long history of sharing its best practices with like-minded organizations and social entrepreneurs. By offering assistance to these groups, Smart Connections strengthens organizations and improves the life prospects of more young people. This work is accomplished through ongoing consulting, technical assistance, and a biennial conference. Smart Connections is funded by visionary grants from The Goldman Sachs Foundation and Time Warner. Over the years, Prep has advised more than 100 organizations. In May 2008, over 200 educators, social entrepreneurs, and nonprofit executives from across the United States and as far away as Argentina, South Africa, and India attended the inaugural Smart Connections conference. Untapped: Building a Future of Diverse Leadership, held at the Time Warner Conference Center, focused on bringing together education and leadership development professionals to learn from a distinguished group of expert researchers and practitioners and to network with each other. Newark Mayor Cory A. Booker, Massachusetts Governor Deval L. Patrick, and Ford Foundation President Luis A. Ubiñas delivered the keynote addresses. Panels included such far-ranging topics as High Standards that Nurture the Academic and Personal Success of the Middle School Child and Improving the Retention and Success of College Students. In May 2008, over 200 educators, social entrepreneurs, and nonprofit executives from across the United States and as far away as Argentina, South Africa, and India attended the inaugural Smart Connections conference. 22

development Fiscal Year 2008 Overview Prep for Prep is very fortunate to have so many loyal and generous supporters. We are grateful for every gift we receive and consider each a vote of confidence in our mission and work. On behalf of the more than 3,600 students and alumni who have directly benefited from the program, thank you. As a program that receives no government support and charges no tuition, Prep relies exclusively on the many individual, foundation, and corporate donors who sustain our efforts each year. We are particularly grateful for the extraordinary generosity and commitment of our Board of Trustees. FY 08 marked the launch of the Campaign for Prep s Future, the Board-driven effort to secure at least half of our operating budget with five-year pledges. The Board responded resoundingly with nearly $5 million in annual pledges. The following section of the Annual Report acknowledges contributions of $500 or more attributed to FY 08 (July 1, 2007 June 30, 2008). TOTAL OPERATING SUPPORT & REVENUE $11,741,727 $3,487,380 Lilac Ball* $5,140,864 Individuals $1,683,094 Foundations $682,512 Corporations $451,784 Dividend & Interest Income $296,093 Alumni Giving Campaign (Given and Raised) * Net of Direct Expenses of $202,332 and Indirect Expenses of $140,623 NOTE: The above figures differ line by line from those presented on the opposite page because they include contributions pledged in previous years but designated for FY 08 (temporarily restricted funds). They also include indirect expenses of the Lilac Ball. Annual Alumni Giving Campaign income includes $4,474 in contributions toward the Memorial Endowment Fund. In the short time that Pierre was with us he soon became an asset to many departments. If he is any indication of today s youth, then our future looks very bright indeed. 21 alumni Thirteenth Annual Alumni Giving Campaign As Prep celebrates 30 years of achievement, we are very grateful for the support of our loyal alumni donors. For the past 13 years, Prep for Prep alumni have faithfully contributed to Prep in many ways.their financial support is an affirmation of Prep for Prep and its central role in their lives.with the listing below, Prep commends the alumni who contributed this past year. For the Thirteenth Annual Alumni Giving Campaign, 747 alumni a record number again this year reaffirmed their membership in the Prep Community by directly contributing almost $134,000 a record amount. Improving on last year s strong participation, 44% of all college graduates contributed. (In contrast the national average for alumni giving to independent schools is 18%.) Almost 100 alumni attended this year s Lilac Ball, where there were three alumni-purchased tables: the Collegiate Table organized by Jerry Bright (IX) with Franklin Amoo (XIV),Victor Amoo (XVII), Sherwyn Fullington (XIII), Adrian Jones (XVII), Jamaal Lesane (X),Wei Miao (VI), Chris Petrie (X), and Kam-Wah Jim (VI) special guest from Calhoun; the Omar Slowe (XIII)/Libertas Partners Table; and the Karen (IV) and Robyn (VIII) Young Table. In addition to making gifts, alumni have raised further funds for Prep, this year totaling $148,000.These funds came from a matching challenge made by the Prep for Prep Board and corporate grants from alumni employers, the Lone Pine Foundation and Libertas Partners. Moreover, the alumni body worked with their employers to increase corporate match gifts by 53%. All these achievements would not have been possible without the enthusiastic efforts of the entire Alumni Giving Committee, chaired by Steve Del Villar (P9 II) with the assistance of Vice Chairs Jerry Bright (IX) and Unique Fraser (P9 V).
