It s MU s longest unbeaten string since it recorded an eight-match streak Sept. 5-Oct. 11, The Golden Eagles face a Wildcats squad with two wins over Top 25 foes already this season, having defeated both then-no. 6 Boston College and No. 22 Delaware on the road. Villanova holds the slim edge all-time against Marquette, 2-1-1, with three of the four meetings being played away from Valley Fields. VU claimed a 2-1 home win in last season s meeting, which followed the lone meeting in Milwaukee in 2014 being played to a 1-1 draw. Despite a scoreless draw last time out against St. John s, Marquette still ranks 15th in the nation with 16 goals scored through seven matches played. Villanova has just 10 goals scored all season. SCOUTING THE WILDCATS Villanova enters Saturday s BIG EAST battle against Marquette sporting a record and coming off a scoreless draw on Tuesday to crosstown foe, Saint Joseph s, on the road. VU was outshot by a margin, while drawing even in corner kicks, 8-8. Prior to that, VU dropped its league opener to visiting 10th-ranked Butler, 3-2, in overtime, following an impressive three-match winning streak over non-conference opponents, highlighted by matching 2-1 victories over No. 6 Boston College and No. 22 Delaware both on the road. The Wildcats carry an even goal differential on the year, scoring and allowing 10 goals apiece, but have been more impressive in the second half as eight of their goals have come in the final 45 minutes of regulation. Seven different players have scored for Nova this season with Lucas Hodges (3g, 1a) and Padraic McCullaugh (2g, 1a) serving as the only players to find the back of the net more than once. In net, Will Steiner claims all seven decisions for Villanova entering play on Saturday with a 1.36 goals against average and 30 saves on a.750 save percentage. DRAWING SOME MUCH-NEEDED REST The Golden Eagles have enjoyed a welcomed full week between matches following a stretch of three consecutive double-overtime draws over an eight-day stretch (Sept ). Marquette has logged huge minutes of late, which can pose a challenge for any squad much less one that features 13 newcomers. After scoring four goals in three straight matches, MU has managed just four goals in its last three matches combined. COMING UP NEXT Following its match-up with Villanova, Marquette will head back out on the road to take on Seton Hall on Saturday, Oct. 1 before returning home to face Wisconsin (Oct. 5) and Georgetown (Oct. 8). LAST TIME OUT Marquette remained unbeaten in its last six matches after a scoreless draw to visiting St. John s in the BIG EAST opener at Valley Fields on Saturday, Sept. 17. It was the third straight draw for MU this season and the second in a row between the two teams after the 2015 BIG EAST opener produced similar results in a match played in Queens, NY. The Golden Eagles held an edge in shots, while St. John s earned the advantage in corner kicks, 8-4, and shots on goal, 7-4. MU goalkeeper Luis Barraza stopped all seven shots that came his way en route to his first shutout of the season and fifth clean sheet of his career. He was named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the week for his performance, the second time in his career earning the honor. ALL-TIME SERIES VS. VILLANOVA The Golden Eagles trail the all-time series against the Wildcats, Three of the four previous meetings have taken place in Eastern Pennsylvania, while the lone meeting in Milwaukee prior to Saturday s scheduled contest was a 1-1 draw back in Last season s match-up at Villanova produced disappointing results for the Golden Eagles, who took a 1-0 first half lead on C. Nortey s 40th minute tally before the Wildcats stormed back with scores in the 45th and 78th minutes for the win. Lucas Hodges got the Cats on the board with just 40 seconds remaining in the first half to send the match to a 1-1 tie at the break, while Sean Sheridan gave his team a lead it would not relinquish. Nova held an lead in shots with a 9-2 advantage in shots on goal. BARRAZA COLLECTS WEEKLY AWARD Sophomore goalkeeper Luis Barraza has been splitting time in net with redshirt senior Mac Wheeler. Each have had their fair share of impressive moments this season and it was Barraza s turn to shine against St. John s on Sept. 17 as he stopped all seven shots that came his way, collecting his fifth career shutout en route to being named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week. Barraza has made 17 saves through four starts this season, posting a record with a.708 save percentage in the process. He and Wheeler have each recorded a shutout on the year and led Marquette to a six-match unbeaten streak entering Saturday s contest vs. Villanova. GOLDEN EAGLES DOMINANT DURING STREAK During MU s current five-match unbeaten streak, the Golden Eagles have outscored opponents They are outshooting the opposition with more than six of those landing on target per match as compared to opponents averaging around four shots on target during the streak. Offensively, it s the first time since 1993 that a Marquette squad has registered three or more goals in four of the team s first seven matches. MU leads the BIG EAST and ranks 15th-nationally with 16 goals scored and a 2.29 goals per game average. MU has five players with two or more goals this season after having just three all of last year. OPENING BIG EAST PLAY Marquette moved its record to in BIG EAST openers since 2009 following a scoreless draw to St. John s on Saturday. It was the second consecutive scoreless draw in a league opening match for the Golden Eagles with the other occurring against the same St. John s team in Queens, NY in The scoreless draw also marked the sixth shutout in league opener for Marquette since 2009, including five consecutive, with a goal differential of FRESHMAN PHENOM LUKA PRPA HAS ARRIVED The freshman from Wind Lake, Wisconsin entered the season with the hype that comes along with being the highest-touted recruit in MU history and he has lived up to the billing. Prpa has 15 points on five goals and five assists in his first seven matches with the Blue & Gold. His five assists rank third nationally, while his 15 points and five goals are ninth and 24th, respectively. Prpa was the first MU player in program history to register back-to-back six-point efforts, doing so in wins over NIU (Aug. 29) and UIC (Sept. 2). He was awarded National Player of the Week by the NSCAA and Top Drawer Soccer, while also being included in three National Team of the Week listings.

5 FRESH FACES FILL THE SCORESHEET Through seven matches, MU newcomers have accounted for 31 of the team s 47 points, including 11 of 16 goals scored, led by Luka Prpa s 15 points on five goals and five assists. In the 4-0 win over NIU, three Marquette freshmen accounted for all four goals and 10 of the 11 points collected the most points accounted for by a group of MU freshmen in a single game since Louis Bennett took over as head coach in Jan Maertins and Connor Alba scored their first career tallies, while Luka Prpa registered two goals and two assists. Prpa s six-point effort was the most by a freshman in a single match since C. Nortey tallied six points with a hat trick in a win over Seton Hall back on Oct. 22, WE ARE MARQUETTE, WE ARE GLOBAL! Head coach Louis Bennett has injected some international flavor to the 2016 roster as four Europeans are featured among the list of 13 newcomers. Zacharias Andreou (Cyprus), Jan Maertins (Germany), Diego Núñez (Spain), Anton von Hofacker (Norway) are not only succeeding on the pitch, but acclimating very quickly to a new team and culture. All have appeared regularly in matches this season with Maertins netting two match-winners and Núñez also finding the scoresheet. Bennett, as well as first-year assistant coach Sean Hughes, both hail from England, while fourthyear assistant coach Marcelo Santos is a native of Brazil. YOUTH MOVEMENT The 2016 Marquette squad is one of the youngest teams in BIG EAST Conference as it features the second-youngest overall roster with 12 freshmen and 10 sophomores, ranking right behind St. John s with 16 freshmen and 10 sophomores. Marquette s five upper classmen (2 seniors, 3 juniors) is the fewest of any BIG EAST program by far. St. John s features the second-fewest with eight. SEASON OPENERS Marquette opened its 53rd season in program history when it hosted Kentucky at Valley Fields, marking the first season opener at home since knocking off UW-Milwaukee, 3-2, in The loss to the Wildcats, who entered the contest ranked in two separate polls, handed MU its first home opening loss in five outings. MEN S SOCCER EXCELS IN THE CLASSROOM The Marquette men s soccer team placed 19 student-athletes from its 26-member 2015 squad on the BIG EAST All-Academic Team. Marquette had a whopping 195 student-athletes recognized in total and the 19 honorees for men s soccer were the fourth-most of any Marquette program. MU WELCOMES LARGEST INCOMING CLASS OF LOUIS BENNETT ERA Marquette head coach Louis Bennett welcomes his largest incoming class in his 11 seasons at the helm. The 13-member class has a global element, featuring 12 freshmen and one sophomore, spanning five countries (Cyprus, Germany, Spain, Norway, U.S.) and three states (Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa). It was rated the 18th-best recruiting class in the nation by TopDrawerSoccer.com. Wind Lake, Wisconsin native Luka Prpa highlights this year s class, having been rated No. 36 on TopDrawerSoccer. com s list of Top-150 recruits of 2016, including the top midfielder in the Midwest BIG EAST STANDINGS TEAM BIG EAST PTS. LOUIS BENNETT II SIGNS PRO, FORGOES SENIOR YEAR Three-year starting midfielder Louis Bennett II has decided to forgo his senior season in the after signing a three-year contract with professional club Anorthosis Famagusta FC of Cyprus. Bennett II was a three-time All-BIG EAST Conference performer and two-time NSCAA All-Region team selection. He finished his Marquette career with 32 points on nine goals and 14 assists in 55 career appearances, including 53 starts. The Shorewood, Wisconsin native is just a few credits shy of completing his degree in communications and is still on track to graduate during the academic year. When someone commits to play for Marquette, our job (as a coaching staff) is provide opportunities to prepare them to be successful and happy in future endeavors, whatever they may be. As long as their degree is in their focus and attainable, I have to support and encourage them to take advantage of all opportunities to establish new goals and chase new dreams as college is a spring board to the future. In this case, his Marquette experience has afforded him this kind of opportunity and, even though I m sad to see him go, I m happy that he is able to achieve his boyhood dream, while also achieving his goal of earning a Marquette degree. - Father and MU head coach Louis Bennett GOLDEN EAGLES IN THE PROS Louis Bennett II is just the latest Marquette signee to earn a professional contract overseas, joining 2015 alumnus C. Nortey (Akademisk Boldklub/ Denmark), 2010 grad Matt Pyzdrowski (Helsingborgs IF/Sweden) and former recruit Andrija Novakovic (Reading FC/England), who signed prior to what would have been his freshman season in The Golden Eagles also feature three additional alumni grads currently under contract in Major League Soccer with Calum Mallace (Montreal Impact) currently in his fifth season, and Axel Sjoberg (Colorado Rapids) and Charlie Lyon (Seattle Sounders) each in their second seasons in MLS HOMEGROWN PLAYERS ON 2016 ROSTER Since Louis Bennett took over the reigns at Marquette the program has always had strong ties to the MLS Academy. Currently, there are eight homegrown players currently on the roster. Incoming freshmen Connor Alba (Chicago Fire), Luka Prpa (Chicago Magic PSG) and Michael Gallo (Chicago Magic PSG) join fellow MLS Academy grads redshirt sophomore Martin Alba (Chicago Fire) along with sophomores Luis Barraza (Real Salt Lake-Arizona), Kees Westra (Seattle Sounders FC), Ruben Sanchez (Chicago Magic PSG) and Toby Howell (Chargers SC). Former Golden Eagle Louis Bennett II (Chicago Fire) was also an Academy grad before coming to Marquette, in addition to others that include: Coco Navarro (Real Salt Lake-Arizona), Charlie Lyon (Chicago Fire) and Brady Wahl (Chicago Fire).
