3 ABOUT TARLETON Tarleton State University was founded in 1899 as John Tarleton College through a bequest by John Tarleton. He was a pioneer Erath County citizen. Tarleton State University is one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in Texas. While it originally granted degrees, John Tarleton College became a junior college-academy program in Tarleton State University became a part of the Texas A & M University System in It was known as John Tarleton Agricultural College until 1949 when the name was changed to Tarleton State College to better reflect Tarleton's growth in the field of liberal arts. In 1959 the Texas legislature expanded Tarleton to a four-year degree granting institution and changed the institution's name to Tarleton State University in The University is located approximately 65 miles southwest of Fort Worth, 100 miles southeast of Abilene, and 85 miles northwest of Waco. One of the most striking features of Tarleton is its spacious 144-acre campus, which is located in the heart of Stephenville. Featuring malls, open spaces, and beautifully landscaped buildings, the campus is dominated by majestic oak and pecan trees which create a warm atmosphere for living and learning. Stephenville, a city of 15,000, is recognized as one of the best small towns in America. Tarleton has additional locations in Killeen, Fort Worth, Granbury, and Thurber. 4 SPORTS MEDICINE GRADUATE ASSISTANT A graduate assistant is appointed by the university and must be actively pursuing degree programs and making satisfactory progress toward their degree. The appointment period includes the fall and spring semesters. The graduate assistant must possess a bachelor s degree and may teach, do research, and / or assigned other duties. The graduate assistant will receive annual compensation, be eligible for health and life insurance, and other benefits. Box T-0370 Stephenville, Texas simpson@tarleton.edu RESPONSIBILITIES / GUIDELINES The graduate assistant athletic trainer will be responsible to the Chair of the Department of Kinesiology, Athletics Director, and the Director of Sports Medicine for all academic and athletic assignments. The graduate assistant will be responsible to the Head Athletic Trainer for additional aspects of the Sports Medicine program. Responsibilities required of the athletic training graduate assistant include but are not limited to: Sports Medicine 1. Duties assigned by Director of Sports Medicine. 2. Duties assigned by the Head Athletic Trainer. 3. Assist in the daily operation and supervision of the sports medicine facilities. 4. Assist in maintenance of all sports medicine records. 5. Provide positive direction and leadership in the sports medicine program. 6. Be a professional role model for all athletic training students. 7. Provide appropriate healthcare for all student-athletes. 8. Travel with athletic teams as assigned and directed. 9. Assist in the observation and supervision of athletic training students. 4

5 10. Maintain regular office hours. 11. Uphold all details in the Tarleton Sports Medicine Policy & Procedure Manual. 12. No male graduate assistants will be allowed to wear earrings while performing any duties including teaching, athletic training, attending classes, and traveling while representing Tarleton State University. 13. A conflict of interest occurs when a graduate assistant has a personal relationship with an athletic training student or student-athlete. Therefore, this is prohibited. 14. Follow all requirements stated within the Tarleton State University Athletics Department Policy Handbook. 15. Other duties as assigned. Academic 1. There are many methods in teaching including lecture, power point presentation, discussion, demonstration, videos, case studies, and practical skill application. 2. Meet with the Activity Program Director for all activity courses. Use the departmental syllabus and follow departmental guidelines for all activity courses. 3. Meet with the Director of Sports Medicine regarding first aid courses. Use the departmental syllabus, materials, and guidelines for this course. 4. Teaching will be evaluated annually by departmental student evaluation of teaching. 5. Provide timely feedback to students regarding exams, quizzes, assignments, etc. 6. You are required to meet classes daily at the scheduled time. If you are unable to meet your class due to travel requirements or illness, it is your responsibility to arrange for a substitute. 7. Be accessible to your students at appropriate times in your office. Return all phone and messages from students. 8. If you have an academic concern about a student in your class, encourage the student to seek assistance from you during office hours or other sources of assistance. 9. Do not disseminate any information about a student s academic progress to anyone other than the student or advisor. 10. Follow all departmental policies regarding grading procedures. 11. A conflict of interest occurs when a graduate assistant has a personal relationship with a student in class due to the fact that you have educational responsibility for that student. Therefore, this is prohibited. 12. The graduate assistant must dress appropriately for classroom instruction and behave as a professional at all times. 13. Follow all requirements of the Department of Kinesiology. 14. Other Duties as assigned. 5

6 TARLETON STATE UNIVERSITY Sports Medicine Graduate Advanced Certificate The Tarleton Sports Medicine Graduate Advanced Certificate Program is an innovative program designed for Sports Medicine professionals. The program offers three degree options and includes specialized coursework in Sports Medicine. KINE 512 KINE 513 KINE 514 KINE 515 KINE 516 Contemporary Issues in Sports Medicine Administrative Practices in Sports Medicine Special Topics in Sports Medicine Education and Research in Sports Medicine Leadership and Professional Development in Sports Medicine All Sports Medicine Advanced Certificate courses are offered ONLINE. All Sports Medicine Advanced Certificate courses may be applied to the following programs: M.S. M.B.A. M.S. Kinesiology / Sports Medicine Business Administration / Sports Medicine (ONLINE) Management & Leadership / Sports Medicine (ONLINE) Graduate School Requirements Bachelor's degree from a regionally-accredited U.S. institution. A 3.0 GPA on the last 60 hours of completed coursework. Complete graduate application with essay and fee. Submit standardized examination scores. Submit all official transcripts. Satisfy other applicable program prerequisites. Complete Sports Medicine Advanced Certificate application. An applicant who does not qualify for full admission may be granted conditional admission. Conditional admission will not be granted to an applicant whose GPA is less than a 2.5 on the last 60 hours of completed coursework. A student who is conditionally admitted must satisfy all conditions before receiving full admission.
