7 Nansen and the Norwegian tradition Fridtjof Nansen ( ), neuroscientist, polar explorer, oceanographer, statesman, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate (1922), was also the founder of Norwegian neuroscience Nansen was the first to state (in 2 papers published 1886) the principle of the Neuron Doctrine Adapted from Jon Storm-Mathisen

8 The Nansen heritage In the 1930s a unique research environment was founded in Norway, which later was to develop into what in other countries is known as the Oslo School of Neuroanatomy
