2 INDEMNITY Contents The study information and the minimum admission requirements in this guide are subject to change and are only a summary of the more general courses of study and requirements. This information was compiled as a general introduction and orientation and the North-West University accepts no liability for any changes that may take place. The official Yearbook of the University must be consulted at all times in compiling a programme for a specific course of study. Admission Please note that not all applicants for a particular course of study will be accepted even though they may meet the minimum requirements for that course of study. The reason for this is that the University can only accommodate a certain number of students in courses and in residences. Most applicants are subject to a selection process (based on your school grades, among other things). The same applies to applications for accommodation in residences. Compiled by the Department of Marketing and Communications in collaboration with the eight (8) faculties and the Admissions Office on the Potchefstroom Campus of the North-West University (NWU). Accommodation in residences Students not living in residences on campus (that is, making use of private accommodation) are incorporated into student life by means of town residences. These town residences have a house committee (HC) and residence wardens, meals can be eaten in dining halls, and students can participate in the organised student life as residence students. Most students make use of this type of accommodation, and plenty of accommodation within walking distance of the campus is available. 2

16 Faculty of ENGINEERING Engineering implies the design, construction and management of products, processes and systems that transform and optimise the commodities that simplify our lives. Engineers study the application of math and science in solving day to day engineering related problems and thus addressing the needs of our society. Engineers are responsible for applying their knowledge in the quest for sustainable economic development and the progression of humankind. All BEng degrees presented by the Faculty of Engineering at the Potchefstroom Campus of the NWU are acknowledged by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) as qualifying degrees for registration as Professional Engineers. In terms of the law, certain projects and careers may only be fulfilled by a professional engineer. ECSA is a co-signer of a number of international agreements which implies that the BEng degrees awarded by the Faculty of Engineering are also acknowledged in various other countries. The engineering principle dates back to the earliest development of humankind. It has however only established as a profession during the nineteenth century. As the technologies advanced the need for faster and better innovations grew rapidly. Because of this growing need there exists excellent career opportunities for engineers in basically all sectors of the economy - nationally as well as internationally. After a number of years in practice, engineers can obtain success in any of the following occupational situations in accordance with their own potential, personality and work preferences: Entrepreneur that owns and operates his own consulting and/or manufacturing company; Academic at a university; Researcher at a university or a research entity in the private sector; Design engineer; Project engineer; Production and/or maintenance engineer; and Manager in a company up to the highest lever (the chief managers of many of our largest companies started their careers as engineers). 16
