First in Outreach. in Admission. in Financial Accessibility. Commitment to Delawareans
bright future Will Fitzhugh Major: History Education Hometown: Gumboro, Del. Indian River High School Delawareans First These two words embody an important truth about the University of Delaware. We are committed to the residents of our state. Delawareans come first in outreach, first in admission and first in financial accessibility. Why Will Chose the University of Delaware Every school to which I applied accepted me. My dad was glad that I was going to UD because it was the one I wanted to go to the most. A lot of my teachers and mentors at Indian River High School went to UD, and I want to teach at Indian River when I graduate. This year, I was an intern coach for the football team there, and we won the state championship. The financial commitment is a big help. I m going to have a manageable debt that I can pay off, hopefully, within a couple years after I start working. Will s University of Delaware Experience Last fall, I was one of 45 men who restarted Delta Tau Delta fraternity on campus. We ve grown a lot over the year. I also joined the UDance executive board. That s a big deal. I m working hard to raise money for the B+ Foundation, a Delaware organization. Will s Commitment to Delaware During football season, I still go back to Indian River for football games. Even though I ve graduated, my dad is VP of the Booster Club. I convinced him to order one of the inflatable helmets for the team to run through just like the one the Blue Hens have. It s a joy to watch them race out onto the field, with my dad by my side, every time. It s the first guiding principle in our Path to Prominence : Our first and most important commitment is to be the flagship of higher education for the State of Delaware both by ensuring that every Delawarean has access to a top-quality education, and by applying the strengths and resources of the University to benefit the greater Delaware community. The rising prominence of the University of Delaware will bring new energy, opportunity and recognition to the State of Delaware. It s a principle we live by every day.
Our promise In 2006, UD launched its Commitment to Delawareans. We promised admission to all in-state students who took certain courses in high school and earned qualifying grades in them. If Delaware students follow this academic roadmap preparing them for college-level work, their chances of admission are great. Of course, access is as much about affordability as academic preparation. And so, in 2009, the University pledged to meet the full demonstrated financial need of in-state students and to cap students debt at one-quarter the cost of a four-year UD education. We remain committed to Delawareans.
Forty percent of the University s eligible undergraduates receive assistance through the Commitment; the average per-year aid package tops $14,800. Full cost of educating a University of Delaware student bright future Manuela Monsalve Majors: Political Science and Spanish Studies Hometown: Smyrna, Del. PolyTech High School 34% Tuition & Fees 66% Additional Support (including state appropriations, contracts and grants, endowment earnings and contributions) 85% Tuition & Fees 15% Additional Support (including contracts and grants, endowment earnings and contributions) The average one-year cost to educate a UD student (undergraduate and graduate) in FY 2011 was $29,947. However, no undergraduate student ever pays the full cost of his or her University of Delaware education. The difference between the tuition and fees of an in-state versus an out-of-state student is largely covered by state appropriations. State appropriations, contracts and grants, endowment earnings and contributions pay about 66 percent of the total cost of educating an in-state student. What will it cost to attend UD? The Net Price Calculator (NPC) allows you to see, in advance, the financial assistance we provide to make a Delaware education accessible to all Delawareans. Although figures on the NPC are based on current year applicants and costs, it s an excellent way to begin a financial conversation with members of your family. Manuela s Preparation for a UD Education I took the most rigorous courses PolyTech High School offered. I took AP English; I took a lot of courses during independent study. I just personally felt like I wanted to take the best that was offered at my high school. AP history was the course that challenged me the most. All of the reading really prepared me for the kind of reading I do in my college courses now. It was a lot of work but it paid off. Why Manuela Chose the University of Delaware UD was not my first choice. In high school, you don t realize what a select school UD is and how privileged in-state students are to go here. Everything happened for a reason and I believe that I was meant to go to UD. The scholarships and the financial aid I receive at UD are really helpful. The University s Commitment takes care of housing, the meal plan, course credits and more. Without them I would never be able to go to college, much less live on campus and participate in all of the things that I do. Manuela s University of Delaware Experience I love UD. I love the school, I love my job, the classes, the professors, the people. The atmosphere is just fantastic. I m really involved in several student organizations. I m on the executive board of HOLA & La Raza (two groups focused on Hispanic interests). I m the president of my sorority and the PR chair for the National Association of Latino Fraternal Organizations.
First in Outreach College preparation begins early. We encourage younger students to think about college and to consider a college degree as an attainable goal. Each fall and spring, you will find hundreds of middle schoolers from New Castle, Kent and Sussex counties arriving on campus for a day filled with science- or business-based demonstrations, interactive problem-solving activities and tours of a campus known as an East Coast classic. Throughout the summer and school year, the University sponsors a range of pre-collegiate programs for students of all ages, including Summer College, Upward Bound, 4-H enrichment camps, Academic Challenge and the Governor s School for Excellence. We touch the lives of children throughout the state.
Serving Delaware Each year, we gather with high school counselors in all three counties to share developments in our community and theirs. We develop and nurture relationships with these professional colleagues and many more throughout Delaware so that together we may help our residents even more. Representatives from community-based organizations are brought to campus for an opportunity to break bread with senior admissions officials and frontline service providers within the University community. We work with parent teacher organizations to ensure that everyone is aware of the opportunities that a University of Delaware education will bring. We communicate our Commitment to Delawareans by visiting every high school in the state of Delaware. We roll out the red carpet by inviting every high school senior in the state to visit our campus for events large and small. bright future Dhara & Bimal Amin Majors: Mechanical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering Hometown: Wilmington, Del. Newark High School Dhara s Preparation for UD Without my AP calculus and AP physics classes, I don t know where I d be. My AP English in 11th grade was amazing. My teacher is the reason why I m such a good writer today. Why Dhara Chose UD One of the main reasons for choosing the University of Delaware was engineering. Its engineering program is one of the top 50 in the U.S. The second reason was money. I knew UD had a preference toward Delawareans. I wanted to go out of state but Delaware was similar academically to my other top choice and was about $30,000 less per year. Delaware s financial commitment to residents was tough to ignore. It s definitely saving my parents a lot since both my brother and I are in college at the same time. Bimal s University of Delaware Experience I wanted to stay in state because I love Delaware. I plan to become an oncologist. I consider getting to do undergraduate research as a freshman a great accomplishment. Dhara s University of Delaware Experience I chose engineering because of Engineers without Borders. Sophomore year I became a project manager for a bridge we re building in Guatemala. I manage the money, organize reports and deal with contacts in Guatemala. It s project management in real life.
First in Admission The initial goal of the Commitment to Delawareans was to prepare Delaware high school students for admission to the University of Delaware. We remain true to this goal by providing all students in our state with an academic roadmap, a requirements chart (see inside back cover) that shows the courses a student must complete and the level of performance a student must achieve to be reasonably confident of gaining admission to the University of Delaware. While we cannot guarantee admission until a student has submitted a complete application, we can lay out what a student needs to do in middle school and grades 9 through 12 to be prepared for Delaware admission. It is important to note that students who do not meet the requirements are still considered for admission and, in many cases, are still admitted to the University of Delaware. Residents of our state are admitted first and notified first.
Delawareans are the first to hear of their admission to the University of Delaware. All Delaware residents who apply by December 1 will hear from the Office of Admissions, on a rolling basis, beginning in January. Out-of-state students must wait until mid-march to hear. In this way, Delawareans can be confident that they will never compete for seats in a class or spaces in a major with non-delawareans. First in Admission 88%* of Delawareans who applied to UD were offered admission. Only 57% of out-of-state applicants received the same offer. Delawareans n Admitted n Not Admitted Non-Delawareans Based upon 2011 data * While most Delawareans (65 percent) were admitted to the Newark campus, a smaller group (23 percent) was admitted to UD s Associate in Arts Program. Participants in this program earn a University of Delaware associate degree and enjoy an uninterrupted transition to a bachelor s degree program in the junior year. bright future Kendall Poole Major: Exercise Science Hometown: Newark, Del. Newark High School Kendall s Preparation for UD I remember learning about the Commitment one night when I was working at the Bob Carpenter Center, where I ve worked since 9th grade. They put out materials during basketball games, and I read the requirements chart. I took four years of Spanish in high school, and I became fascinated with anatomy and physiology. I felt good about being on the right track. I think that it s an eye opener to students in high school around the state that they actually have a chance of getting in and they should try to apply to UD. Why Kendall Chose UD The financial commitment impacted my decision. I had decided I was going to go to the military and then go to college. With the Commitment to Delawareans and my financial aid situation, I realized that college was definitely possible. Kendall s Commitment to Delaware I am co-founder of the Yes U Can! program s UD chapter. The program is designed to help people with disabilities and limited mobility get exercise. I train a man with Parkinson s, improving his mobility, flexibility and strength because he s at risk of falling. My faculty mentor introduced us to this program and asked us to make something sustainable. Delawareans benefit directly from this program because it helps people attain goals and improve their quality of life through exercise.
First in Financial Accessibility Our aim is to make a University of Delaware education affordable to all qualified residents of our state. We pledge to meet the full demonstrated financial need up to the cost of in-state tuition, fees, a stipend for books and on-campus room and board of all Delawareans who file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by the deadline. In fact, the University of Delaware awarded Delawareans $7.9 million through the Commitment this school year. And, understanding how important it is to leave college with as little indebtedness as possible, we further pledge to minimize your debt. Specifically, our goal is that no student will have loans in excess of 25 percent of the cost of a four-year education. That s like paying for only one year of a four-year college education.
UD awarded $7.9 million to Delawareans through the Commitment this school year. While a University of Delaware education is a tremendous value, we recognize that it still represents a considerable investment for families. We want Delawareans to know that your investment in a Delaware degree will benefit you greatly. According to the Bureau of Economic Development, the annual salary of a college graduate is 64 percent higher than that of a high school graduate. For the average holder of a University of Delaware bachelor s degree, this translates into an extra $830,000 earned over his or her working career. Smart money Studies show people with a bachelor s degree earn almost double the income in their lifetime compared to those with only a high school diploma. Your Academic Roadmap to a University Education General Requirements 1. You must complete at least 20 full year academic courses between grades 9 through 12, and at least 5 of those units must be completed during your senior year. 2. The level of these courses must be at least college preparatory or higher. If your school denotes its course levels with phases (with 5 as the highest) then these must be phase 3, 4 or 5 courses. 3. At least 2 of these 20 academic courses must be at a level that is higher than college preparatory for example, honors, accelerated, enriched, Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, Academic Challenge. If your school uses course phases (with 5 as the highest), then courses denoted as phase 4 or phase 5 would meet this requirement. 4. Among these 20 full year academic courses, no grade may be below a B- (or the equivalent of a B- according to your school s grading scale) and your overall cumulative GPA in these academic courses must be at least a B+ or higher. 5. You must have a record of good conduct in your school and in your community. Students who have been expelled from school, have received suspensions for serious infractions, or have been convicted or adjudicated by the courts of crimes are not eligible. 6. You must be a resident of the State of Delaware and qualify for in-state tuition at the University of Delaware. Your application must be complete by our application deadline, and you must enter the University of Delaware as a freshman for the fall or spring semester immediately following your high school graduation. 7. You must graduate with a high school diploma from a regionally accredited high school. (We will gladly consider home-schooled students on a case-by-case basis.) 8. Finally, your 20 academic courses must include the following courses as specified below. To be reasonably confident of being admitted, here is a plan to follow that may lead to a place in our freshman class. high school diploma Bachelor s degree WHAT IS THE FAFSA? FAFSA, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, is found online at www. fafsa.edu.gov. It is the only form you (and your parents, if applicable) need to complete in order to be considered for need-based aid by the University of Delaware. The form collects household and financial information, including income tax return information for the current year, which is used to determine need and federal award eligibility. We recommend filing the FAFSA by February 15 of your senior year of high school in order to be notified of your financial award package by mid-march of that year. Course Requirements* Course Years Required Level English 4 years At least college preparatory Mathematics 4 years At least college preparatory drawn only from algebra I, algebra II, geometry, trigonometry, statistics, probability, precalculus and calculus or an equivalent integrated math sequence that incorporates the above Science 4 years At least college preparatory; at least 3 of the 4 years must be drawn only from chemistry, biology and physics and all 3 must include a laboratory; alternatively, you may complete 3 years of an approved integrated science curriculum Foreign Language 3 years of the same foreign language At least college preparatory and all 3 years must be completed during 9-12 grades History 2 years At least college preparatory, including one course in world history Social Studies 2 years At least college preparatory and drawn from psychology, political science, government, geography, economics or sociology; a year of college preparatory science may be substituted for one of the social studies courses Elective 1 year At least college preparatory * The University of Delaware Admissions Office works with each high school in our state to identify which of their courses we will count as college preparatory or higher.
