2 Introduction Due to exponential growth of knowledge and increase in research activity in various subjects, the number of documents being published in various fields. The publication explosion has caused much constraint for the librarian and libraries. The numbers of library users are increasing with demands for information in multi-disciplinary subjects.

3 Engineering College in Gujarat: An Overview Gujarat has been one of the leading states in the country in providing technical education. There are 14 Government engineering colleges, 10 Grant in Aids Engineering colleges and 135 Self finance engineering colleges. The total number of students in Government engineering college is 4868; Grant in Aids Engineering colleges is 2309 and in self finance engineering college is Total numbers of students in engineering college are 24576(As on ). This speaks volume for the number of colleges and the number of students studying in graduate and post-graduate degree courses and some of them also undertake research programmed leading to Doctorate Degree in Engineering.

4 Problem facing by the government engineering college libraries of Gujarat Major problem facing by the libraries are following. Inadequate Grant Lack of staff Infrastructure facility Lack of technical professional Inadequate resources Inadequate computer hardware/software infrastructure

5 Objective To assess the present status of government engineering college libraries of Gujarat. To find out the scope for resource sharing through networking. To propose a model for networking of government engineering college libraries of Gujarat.

6 Research Methodology To collect the data, questionnaire technique has been used. A comparative study is carried out of the fourteen government engineering college libraries in Gujarat state.

8 GECLIBNET This research proposes a design for networking of government engineering college libraries in Gujarat. Which may be called Government Engineering College LIBraries NETwork (GECLIBNET).

12 Training Programmes As soon as work on the network begins training should be organized for staff of member library for networking. Thus, GECLIBNET will be offer continuous training to library professions in the use of software, hardware and latest networking techniques and one yearly conference will be organized by network on current issues at National level.

13 Hardware and Network Maintenance It would be economical for an Indian library network to get hardware and network maintenance done by an established agency on an annual basis rather than appoint staff to do so appointing of more staff adds to long term financial commitments which is not advisable, keeping in view the growing competition among maintenance agencies

14 Funds and budget control The initial cost for capital investment for installing the servers and other nodes and accessories will be provided by the government of Gujarat. To meet the recurring expenditure and to sustain the project for expending better service to the user community funds could be either generated internally through membership charges, services fees and support parent organization or externally support for funding or government organizations.

15 Administrative Mechanism President:- Director, Technical education department, Gujarat. Members :- (a) Five principle of the government engineering colleges from Gujarat nominated by the director by rotation basis. (b) Five professors of the government engineering college of Gujarat nominated by the director on rotation basis. (c) Five librarians of the government engineering college of the Gujarat nominated by the director on rotation basis. (d) Director, Higher Education, Government of Gujarat. (e) Director, Public Libraries, Government of Gujarat. Member Secretary :- University librarian, Gujarat Technological University, Ahmadabad. The Executive council will meet once in a quarter year to discuss matters relating to the functioning of the GECLIBNET and oversee its Affairs.

16 Conclusion Benefits of GECLIBNET are too many. It can avoid unnecessary duplication of resources, saving of finance, give effective library services, teachers and students will have access to a wider range of information resources, saving a time and library staff creates a new familiar enviournment so they can exchange their skill, talent and expertise.
