1 Virginia Department of Health Adult Immunization PPHF Activities AIM Adult Immunization Webinar October 31, 2013 Laura Ann Nicolai, MPH Division Epidemiologist, Division of Immunization Project Goals 1. Expand the role of employers in providing adult vaccines to their employees 2. Expand the role of pharmacies in providing adult vaccines in their communities

2 Licensed Child Day Care Centers in Virginia 3,494 licensed child day care centers (CDCC) in Virginia Average capacity of 95 children cared for at each site Licensed by the Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS) Monitoring visits twice a year Continuing education requirements for staff (varies depending on position)

3 Employee Vaccination Initiative - Overview Pilot project open to all 35 Health Districts; 25 chose to participate Initiate on-site CDCC vaccination of employees Free influenza and Tdap vaccines (state purchased) provided by VDH Division of Immunization (DOI) Financial incentive to compensate for nursing staff time and ancillary supplies Limit of 5 vaccination clinics per Health District Required to vaccinate minimum of 25% of eligible employee population and to provide educational materials to owners/administrators and employees Pilot project only; owner-facilitated vaccination encouraged for future years

4 Employee Vaccination Initiative - Implementation Introductory to all Health District Directors Two conference calls to introduce project and program requirements Signed MOAs and required forms Enrollment Form Vaccine Order Form Summary Report Documentation of doses administered

5 Progress to Date 125 workplace vaccination clinics scheduled 65% held in October 2013; remaining scheduled for November Average of 68% of eligible employees accepting 1 or more dose of vaccine (preliminary data)

7 Pharmacists in Virginia 7,849 licensed pharmacists in Virginia 1,784 pharmacy sites statewide (includes non-public) ~1,350 sites are in traditional drugstore setting 16 separate chains cover 1,207 sites No continuing education requirement specific to immunizations

8 Pharmacy Objectives Enhance access to immunizations by expanding the number of pharmacists and pharmacy locations administering adult vaccinations Objective 1: Increase the percentage of pharmacies enrolled in VIIS, the Virginia Immunization System, by 25% Objective 2: Increase the number of pharmacies with an approved protocol on file at the Board of Nursing by 10% Objective 3: Increase the number of pharmacies utilizing VIIS to record doses administered by 20% Objective 4: Increased the number of vaccine doses administered that are recorded in VIIS by pharmacies by 20%

9 Objectives Continued Objective 5: Increase the percentage of non-influenza doses administered by pharmacies by 10% Objective 6: Increase pharmacists knowledge and understanding of vaccine recommendations and administration/documentation protocols Objective 7: Finalize data exchange between VIIS and three pharmacy sites (either chains or independent) within the program period

10 Interventions/ Activities Offer VDH/VPhA sponsored trainings on relevant immunization issues Promote VIIS to pharmacists though targeted outreach and trainings Increase knowledge and understanding of VA vaccination requirements Increase pharmacists knowledge and understanding of all adult vaccine recommendations Actively recruit those pharmacists who participate in VDH/VPhA sponsored immunization trainings

11 Interventions/ Activities Continued Identify pharmacy sites wishing to initiate VIIS data exchange Work with site contacts to establish and test data exchange functionality Provide site-specific trainings for newly enrolled pharmacies on VIIS functionality

12 Pharmacy Outcome Measures Number and percentage of pharmacies authorized to administer vaccine (approved protocol on file) Number and percentage of pharmacies enrolled in VIIS Number and percentage of pharmacies reporting vaccine doses administered to VIIS Number of doses administered reported to VIIS Percentage of non-influenza vaccine doses reported in VIIS Number of pharmacists receiving CE credit for VDH/VPhA trainings during project period Number of pharmacy sites conducting data exchange with VIIS

13 Training and Education Partner with the Virginia Pharmacists Association (VPhA) (and previously with PIV) Course topics taken from poll of pharmacists Evening webcast format minutes long Live congregate viewing sites statewide as well 1-2 speakers per session; always have pharmacist presenter Free CE credit offered to pharmacists and pharmacy technicians Pre- and post-course surveys required for CE credit Archived recordings available for later viewing VIIS is always featured

14 Course Topics Immunization Update 2012 Best Practices for Vaccine Administration and Documentation in the Pharmacy Setting Preventing Hepatitis B among Diabetics: The Pharmacist s Role Influenza Vaccine Recommendations 2013

15 Course Participation > 300 individual participants 42% attended two or more trainings 85% complete surveys for CE credit 73% would like more information on immunization topics High participant satisfaction ratings but uncertain if trainings are encouraging non-immunizers to become immunizers Plan to survey participants in early 2014 to ask if nonimmunizers are now immunizing

16 Leveraging Information Contact information required from all participants VIIS staff follow-up with each participant to ask if they have questions or concerns about VIIS
