A student s viewpoint of the value of the Tri-C... Where Futures Begin. TM 10/2013 VOL 4 1
Student: Louise Burton PSA Commander: Greg Winston Sr. I wanted a career in Private Security. The best part of my training was my instructors. They were very helpful and professional. 3. Are you currently working in the field of security? Yes I am. 4. If so, What is the name of the agency or organization? The company I am currently working for is Tenable Private Security. 5. What is your job title? Unarmed Security Guard. 6. Describe the best part of your job or what you like the most about your job. The best part of my job is the people. I get to meet new people every day and help them with any questions they may have. 7. What advice would you give to someone looking to enter the that would help them become a success in the private security industry? I would tell them that Tri-C gave me the best education I could have asked for. The instructors were great at teaching me about the ins and outs of the business and they should find a program like mine to enter into the field of security. I was taught how to conduct myself as a professional security officer and learned a great deal about the security field. TM 10/2013 VOL 4 2
Student: Sheria McElrath PSA Commander: Jacqueline Bowman I believe in protecting and serving my family. I was asked a question one day saying Are you able and willing to defend yourself by stopping aggression of another to protect your family? I said, Yes. My Pastor then said Well, you can get your OPOTC. Study the laws and be legal and also obtain employment doing what you would do anyway. The best part was encouraging others to keep pressing their way toward the mark and also being encouraged not quit, to be strong and that we can accomplish these goals set before us. 3. Are you currently working in the field of security? I am currently in a security position in the church gaining experience by volunteering. 4. If so, What is the name of the agency or organization? Speak Life Ministries International Church 5. What is your job title? Security Personnel 6. Describe the best part of your job or what you like the most about your job. What I like most is being depended on and being held accountable for my actions. I have to be serious, watch out for others, be prompt for duty and also obtain my equipment and set up upon arrival. 7. What advice would you give to someone looking to enter the that would help them become a success in the private security industry? Become more self-disciplined. Have intrinsic motivation. Listen and follow instructions right away. Do not be hasty to respond without thinking things through. TM 10/2013 VOL 4 3
Student: Sheila Pugh PSA Commander: Thomas Ross It was a prerequisite for employment with Baldwin Wallace College and, if hired (which I was), I had to complete the program within the first 6 months of employment. Meeting so many new people and going from being strangers, out for ourselves and our personal reasons for attending to becoming a team and working together as a unit to ensure that if one fell we all fell or if one was stronger, their strength carried the entire team. 3. Are you currently working in the field of security? I am currently working in the public safety field (Baldwin Wallace College) and have recently accepted a position with Progressive Insurance in their Emergency Operation Center. 4. If so, What is the name of the agency or organization? Baldwin Wallace College, currently, but November 7 th I will be starting my new career with Progressive Insurance in their security department as an Emergency Command Center Operator. 5. What is your job title? Currently, Public Safety Officer. Nov. 7th it will be Emergency Command Center Operator. 6. Describe some of your job duties that your private security training helped you prepare to accomplish. Report writing, customer service, handcuffing and the confidence to know what to do when faced with a possible issue. Gaining respect and understanding to address your superiors. The importance of grooming and a nice, clean uniform. 7. Describe the best part of your job or what you like the most about your job. Customer Service and report writing. Learning about new people and new duties. 8. What advice would you give to someone looking to enter the that would help them become a success in the private security industry? Continue to apply for positions that require the certification and inform those interested that you have taken the initiative to complete the requirements to obtain a security position with that company. TM 10/2013 VOL 4 4
Student: John M. Lombardi PSA Commander: Bryan Loretz I wanted to go to the Academy because I intend to make a career out of security and the only way to do that well is to be as highly trained as possible. This is also why I chose Tri-C- because their training was so above and beyond what is actually required for private security certification. I enjoyed unarmed self defense the most. It was very enjoyable to get to arm bar, wrist-lock and kick my fellow class mates and instructors. 3. Are you currently working in the field of security? Yes 4. If so, What is the name of the agency or organization? Metro Cleveland Security 5. What is your job title? Field Rep/Supervisor. 6. Describe some of your job duties that your private security training helped you prepare to accomplish. Reporting writing has been a big help. Until I got the job of supervisor, I had no idea how many reports I would have to write. In a week, I can turn in well over 30 reports and I am very grateful that I was shown how to do that correctly. 7. Describe the best part of your job or what you like the most about your job. I like that fact that I can travel all over the Cleveland, Akron and Canton area and I get to work anything from Section 8 Housing all the way to multi-million dollar high rises. I can help all of these people (sometimes in very different ways) and I get paid to do it. I also enjoy doing straight supervision. Going out and checking on S/O is a lot of fun as well. 8. What advice would you give to someone looking to enter the that would help them become a success in the private security industry? The thing I would most like to tell people is to listen to what the instructors say. A lot of what they say can keep you from getting into trouble or could even save your life. For example, I was in an altercation with a man that hit my fellow security officer, and through the entire thing I called him nothing but Sir. Once we got the person under control he calmed down very quickly and listened to everything I asked him to do. The other officer I was with did not use as polite words as I did and the man would not listen to anything he said. That is a simple and very useful thing I learned in the academy that made my job much easier. TM 10/2013 VOL 4 5
Student: Crystal Young PSA Commander: Jacqueline Bowman I decided to enroll in the Academy after talking to my cousin who had recently graduated and enjoyed the experience. Not only that, but I also found that the career field for security officers was becoming more in demand. The best part of the Academy to me was when we learned how to conduct a proper search for any weapons on the offenders body. I liked it because it was a hands-on experience and it also showed me that you could never be too cautious. Many of the items we would presume to be not harmful or items of common use were very dangerous and many were guns. 3. Are you currently working in the field of security? Yes. 4. If so, what is the name of the agency or organization? I currently work for Industrial Security Services. My post is contracted by the City of Cleveland at the Central Collection Agency. 5. What is your job title? My job title currently is a Security Officer/Private Investigator. 6. Describe some of your job duties that your private security training helped you prepare to accomplish. The Academy helped prepare me for the entire job, but mainly for the detail and specifics in report writing. It allowed me to be able to identify a potential offender from a quick glance, and to be very attentive to names, language used and body language. 7. Describe the best part of your job or what you like the most about your job. I like my job a lot and my favorite part is the communication with employees and the public. With my position, I have had the opportunity to meet some very interesting, powerful and kind people who not only work in various city positions, but also those who visit for conferences and business meetings. I also had the pleasure, on numerous accounts, to meet Mayor Frank Jackson who held a conversation with me without any of his own guards or co-workers and it made me feel good because that meant he felt safe and secure with me and that I did my job properly, receiving a nice compliment. 8. What advice would you give to someone looking to enter the that would help them become a success in the private security industry? My advice to all students in the Academy would be to always be on your P s and Q s, whether on the clock or off, once you enter this field- especially because you never know who s who and what opportunities that person may hold if they recognize you.
