2 1 INTRODUCTION The University of Piraeus, through the work Telecommunication Networks and Services (TNS) Laboratory of the Department of Digital Systems, is establishing a XiFi node, which has the working title iwave (Internet of Things, Wireless Access and Virtualization Technologies for an Advanced Future Internet Experimentation Node). This document presents information on the structure of the node, the integration of FIWARE Generic Enablers and provides information on the enabled experimentation in the area of building and traffic management XIFI Consortium Parties Page 2 of 6
3 Infrastructure Toolbox (ITBox) Publish to 2 TNS XIFI NODE OVERVIEW The TNS XiFi Node comprises an infrastructure with several hardware devices and software components, supporting the execution of a great variety of experimentations, particularly in the areas of Internet of things (IoT) and Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN), as well as advanced wireless access covering open WiFi/LTE access points and Software Defined Radios (SDR). The TNS XiFi Node will mainly focus on the research and experimentation in new areas with innovative technologies for the FI-PPP and FI developers and users. 2.1 XiFi / FIWARE-enabled Architecture The TNS XiFi Node architecture (Figure 1) is comprised of three different segments: (a) the Core Network and Servers (CNS), (b) 4G/B4G Wireless Broadband Network (WBN) and (c) the Wireless Sensor/Actuator Network (WSN/WSAN). The CNS segment includes the computing, storage and networking devices (resources) as well as the backbone, teeing together all the network elements. The 4G/B4G WBN allows for advanced wireless experimentations based on a plethora of Radio Access Technologies (RATs) including among others cellular UMTS/HSDPA/LTE as well as the IEEE suite of standards. The WSN/WSAN (i.e. the IoT infrastructure) includes a wide range of heterogeneous sensing devices that allow for monitoring of both the indoor and outdoor environmental conditions. Further to that, the infrastructure has been designed, developed and configured in a way so as to enable its future extension by adding new sensing devices/integrated platforms from the field of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), such as traffic management sensors. By introducing the XiFi/FIWARE capabilities, such as FIWARE Ops and the Generic Enables (s), into the TNS Node architecture, the node is enhanced in terms of devices interoperability, heterogeneous data aggregation and the provision of powerful and reliable IT services to the private and public sector. In particular, including the Management (BDM), combined with Specific Enablers (SE) being developed and/or customized by TNS Lab, facilitate the interoperability and easy integration of heterogeneous components in the WSN/WSAN. Moreover, the Orion Context Broker (CB) local instances that are hosted in TNS data center, allow the storing and the aggregation of data from the WSN/WSAN. The TNS XiFi Node deployment, federation and management is achieved by exploiting the FIWARE Ops, supported by the XiFi Infrastructure Toolbox (ITBox). Finally, the public access to the node is achieved by exploiting the BigData Analysis Cosmos Global Instance in FIWARE Cloud, which offers public access to global instance, while the users who are authenticated in FIWARE Cloud, use the FIWARE VMs in order to access the TNS XiFi Node (FI-Lab Instance). 4 3 SUPPORTED SERVICES & INDICATIVE USE CASES Various services are offered by the TNS XiFi Node and can be used to support many different and diverse use cases in the areas of smart building/city or ITS. Two of them namely, (a) the Building Management service and (b) the Traffic Management service, are indicatively analyzed below. The former refers to the management of both indoor and outdoor environmental conditions in a building within University of Piraeus, whereas the latter focuses on the management of traffic in a wider area e.g. the city of Piraeus, Greece. Table 1 presents the impact that is expected from the development and offering of the services/use cases above to the private and public sector, through the TNS XiFi Node. The indicative use cases refer to concepts that are associated with the performance of experimentations, as well as the testing of products and/or application/services from different users (e.g. FI developers, research institutes, SMEs, etc). Table 1: Supported services expected impact in the private and public sector Experimentation Infrastructure to private sector (e.g. SME) Services to society Building Management Service ( ) Traffic Management Service A more detailed description of the Building and Traffic Management services follows XIFI Consortium Parties Page 4 of 6
5 3.1 Building Management service through TNS XiFi Node Building Management refers to the monitoring of environmental conditions/parameters and the autonomic adjustment of them. The rationale for this service relates to the expectation for a public and remotely accessible service that will support the building management from the perspective of the monitoring of indoor and outdoor environmental conditions. The environmental conditions can be monitored in two different levels: (a) in the interiors of a building (e.g. TNS Lab headquarters), and (b) in outdoor locations (e.g. around the building of the TNS Lab). The existing infrastructure includes environmental monitoring WSN/WSAN deployments with numerous sensing and actuation devices, whereas is accessible only in the local/private cloud of the TNS Laboratory. Throught the integration with the FIWARE Ops and the FIWARE s, the TNS infrastructure will enhance its functionality, as well as will extend its capabilities since it will be able to support the integration and easy deployment of heterogeneous WSN/WSAN deployments. Further to that, it will allow the remote access to a Building Management service, enabling in this way the performance of experimentations, SMEs Building Management deployments testing and a potential public service to the society. Figure 2 depicts the high-level overview of an indicative use case of the Building Management service, where it is considered that a user (e.g. a SME) desires to test an application for the environmental monitoring in a smart building. The TNS XiFi Node by exploiting FIWARE capabilities will allow to the users/experimenters/testers to exploit real-time measurements of environmental conditions such as Temperature, Humidity, Light Intensity, etc. in order to perform the required tests on the application. The data from the WSN/WSAN TNS Infrastructure will be acquired by using the Management instances, whereas in turn will be published in the Orion Context Broker local instances. The Orion Context Broker local instances publish the updated data into the Orion Context Broker global instance and then, the node users are able to access the data through BigData Analysis Cosmos, which is hosted to FIWARE Cloud. Data Source Layer Aggregation Layer User Layer Cosmos A SME performs the testing of an application for the environmental monitoring in a smart building. - Connects to FIWARE Cloud and then perform request to TNS XiFi Node - Cosmos serves the enduser/application request, by acquiring and returning data from the TNS XiFi Node WSN. 6 3.2 Traffic Management Service through TNS XiFi Node This service refers to the traffic management in a wide area in a city (e.g. Piraeus, Greece). The motivation for such a service corresponds to various triggers such as the monitoring of the traffic status in different road and the real-time parking discovery in the city. Further to that, the Traffic Management service could be provided in the public sector, as a service for the society to facilitate the daily life of the people, such as the drivers. The existing capabilities of the node support the provision of a traffic management service only in the close loop of the local/private cloud of the TNS Laboratory, which manipulates data that are acquired from different web resources (e.g. websites). By introducing the FIWARE capabilities in the TNS Node, it will be supported the integration and will be facilitated the deployment of heterogeneous traffic and/or parking sensors that will be distributed in the city. Furthermore, the TNS Node will be able to support the remote access on the services, providing it as an open and public service for the society. Figure 3 depicts an indicative high-level overview of a use case, which is based on the Traffic Management service. Specifically, it is considered that a traffic management application has been developed and exploits the TNS XiFi Node capabilities so as to support its functionality. The application offers traffic monitoring in terms of the number of the cars in a street, as well as supports the parking discovery in the city. Similarly to the Building Management service, the data from the deployed WSN for the traffic management, will be acquired by using the Management instances, which in turn will publish them into the local instances of the Orion Context Broker. The Orion Context Broker local instances publish the updated data into the Orion Context Broker global instance and then, the node users are able to access the data through BigData Analysis Cosmos, which is hosted to FIWARE. Data Source Layer Aggregation Layer User Layer WSN/WSAN WBN CNS Cosmos - Cosmos serves the enduser/application request, by acquiring and returning data from the TNS XiFi Node WSN. 5 TNS XiFi Node ITS Cloud A traffic management application gets traffic data throught TNS XiFi Node. - Connects to FIWARE Cloud and then perform request to TNS XiFi Node Cosmos global instance: - Provides remote access to all available data - Authenticated users have access to via FIWARE VMs local instances: - Store locally WSN data - Publish data into Global instance The s: - Acquires measurements data from WSN resources (Temper., Humid. etc) - Publishes data into local instances Figure 3: Traffic Management service An indicative use case XIFI Consortium Parties Page 6 of 6
