2 Private Branch Exchange (PBX)Service GENERAL Private Branch Exchange (PBX) Service is composed of the following Trunk lines over which the end user can make and receive local and long distance calls Attendant positions for use by the end-user s operator in answering and routing calls. All incoming calls are answered by the attendant to handle all calls incoming, outgoing and internal. Lines for interconnecting within the end user s business are called station lines. 3 MARYLAND, VIRGINIA, WEST VIRGINIA, & DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA TRUNKS Trunks are CO Lines which connect PBX Systems to Local Exchange Network and/or Long Distance Network and may be Local Exchange Lines, Foreign Exchange Lines, Foreign Zone Lines, Foreign CO Lines, and WATS Combination Trunks used for incoming or outgoing traffic. When used as an incoming trunk, the call is connected to station by attendant. When used as outgoing trunk an access code (normally 8 or 9) is dialed. Outward Trunk used for outgoing traffic. Incoming traffic routed to station by attendant. Outgoing calls connected to trunk by attendant. Inward Trunk is dedicated to incoming traffic. Calls placed directly by station users; no access code or attendant required. DID lines cannot make outgoing calls. DID service consists of a series of telephone numbers in the central office that correspond to the individual PBX extension connected to the customer's PBX. For example, the main DID telephone number is : A caller dials The CO screens the number and routes the call to the PBX over the appropriate DID trunk group. The CO "transmits" the last 4 numbers (of the 7-digit telephone number) to the PBX. The PBX receives the "transmitted" number and routes the call to the appropriate extension. NEGOTIATION Gather the following information from the end-user: Number of trunks.

Provides automatic identification station line number when dialing message toll calls for subsequent billing. Each station associated with this service requires a 7 digit telephone number. This service is furnished with compatible PBX systems and must be provided on all trunk lines in a trunk group. The SIT is a DID station number. If used as a SIT, the station number cannot also be an NDN, i.e. the same number cannot appear on the records as both.
