What You Need To Do

Eligibility and Financial Aid Megan Remec Jeremy Tittle

You re Eligible for Soccer. Now What s College Going to Cost? The average total cost of attendance in for first-time, full-time students living on campus and paying in-state tuition was $21,000 at public 4-year institutions, $41,420 at private nonprofit 4-year institutions, and $30,840 at private for-profit 4-year institutions. - U.S. Dept. of Education, National Center for Education Statistics

You re Eligible for Soccer. Now How You re NOT Going to Pay For It. Full, Soccer-only Scholarship If the world were your oyster. 117,645 H.S. Senior boys; 6568 College Freshman spots (Sept. 2012) 592 NCAA & NAIA programs with soccer scholarship 9.5 scholarships/program. How much is available when you re a Sr.? 592 programs X 5 rides X $21,000 (avg. cost, public) = $6,216,000 $6,216,000 / 6568 roster spots = < $950/student-athlete Favorable Assumptions: 0 foreigners; max funding; large $ available; & only public school cost considered. What if I said there s 100 times that amount of money available? More competitive for girls. The top females get identified, contacted & sometimes committed by the top programs as Freshmen & Sophomores. And then, all of them aren t receiving full, soccer-only, scholarships. Remember the 2% Rule

You re Eligible for Soccer. Now How You re NOT Going to Pay For It. Warning Signs of Scholarship Scams The organization guarantees you will win an award as a result of paying a fee The organization sounds like a non-profit but has no traceable history The organization claims it will handle all your scholarship applications for you The organization requests banking or credit card information to process your application The organization requires an entrance fee

Anchors & Unique Fit We've been emphasizing "FIT" when generating your college list. Choose the best colleges for you FIRST, then work on the finances. Too often, parents have been known to say, That school s too expensive there s no way. But until you apply and get accepted to a college, you really don't know what the out-of-pocket cost will be. So the correct order is: You should decide where you want to go to college. Fill out the applications and send them in. Hit deadlines. Then begin the work on figuring out the finances.

You re Eligible for Soccer. Now How You Are Going to Pay For It. Work at it!: Like 99% of the ways you ve ever received money. $159,000,000,000 was awarded in aid last year. Where is it?! Show me the $! Search engine results: paying for college: 105 million million how to pay for college: +1 billion without parents: +143 million without loans: +49 million without FAFSA: 157, million

Web Sites for College Information There are millions of these. DO YOUR RESEARCH! Remember that some of the web sites out there ask you to do some work before giving you any information and then want you to pay extra for a report or additional information. Choose wisely!

Learning a New Language FAFSA Free Application for Federal Student Aid: uses taxrelated info; filed Jan. 1 of the year you plan to start college; don't have to have your taxes completed but requires much of the same info. SAR (Student Aid Report) follows your FAFSA filing, summarizing your EFC (Expected Family Contribution). (few days if online FAFSA; to 4 wks if snail-mail) FAFSA4caster estimates your financial aid for a given school and your EFC.

Learning a New Language Types of Financial Aid Grants & Scholarships - do not need to be paid back Student loans - need to be paid back Work study Veterans benefits Financial aid can come from Federal or State governments, institutions, or private organizations

You re Eligible for Soccer. Now How You Are Going to Pay For It. Do NOT place too much emphasis on athletic scholarships. Improve your GPA. Grades! Grades! Grades! Become familiar with the Financial Aid & Scholarship process. It is often institution-specific, including deadlines! Realize that coaches do very little scouting of H.S. games. BE SEEN -- WITH YOUR PEERS Jr. year is the year to travel tournaments. Coaches rely on what they see and hear at quality club tournaments. BE SEEN -- Consider attending a winter/summer camp. BE SEEN -- Videos.

Sticker Cost vs. Realized Expense 4-year Sticker Out-of-Pocket Public $21k $11k Private $41k $19k * Avg. student loan debt at graduation = $22k. ** Avg. beginning salary for college graduate = $56k. * U.S. Dept. of Education, National Center for Education Statistics, ** U.S. Dept. of Commerce, Economic and Statistics Admin., 2012.

Financial Questions a College Coach May Ask You: Are you looking for a scholarship? How much? Have you received offers from any other school? Have you completed a financial aid form? Are you or your parents willing to borrow money to fund your education?

Questions for You to Ask the Soccer Coach Is the program supported and fully funded by the Athletic department? Does the team have to fundraise to support the program? Describe the walk-on situation. How many make it, compete, and earn a scholarship? What is the availability and chance of receiving a scholarship? What, if anything, do I have to pay for on road trips? How much is the school prepared to offer? What happens with a scholarship, and financial aid in general, when college costs go up each year?

Questions for You to Ask the Soccer Coach part 2 Is financial aid available for summer school? What are the financial aid details? What does my scholarship cover? And, NOT cover? What can I receive in addition to the scholarship? Camps? How do I increase my aid? What happens to my financial aid or scholarship if I'm injured? What are the opportunities for employment while I'm a student?

Financial Aid Summary Research; Do Your Homework. Don t Be Afraid To Ask Questions. Ask Different People the Same Question. Speak With Everyone Not Just Soccer People. Engage Others In Your Cause. Don t Be Shy. Be Assertive. Best Way To Do That Is To Prepare In Advance.
