ANNUAL REPORT SUMMARY OF ACCOMPLISHMENTS
FROM THE DESK OF RICHARD L. EUBANK CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD Since the Veterans of Foreign Wars Foundation was chartered in 1996, our organization has always had a simple yet profound mission, namely to provide support for urgently-needed programs and services that assist our troops abroad, their families back home and America s often forgotten veterans. The Foundation has never wavered from this solemn commitment as we strongly believe that boosting the morale of these individuals who have often personally sacrificed so much for us all is not only patriotic but it is in fact the least we can do to say Thank You! We live in a world that is ever-changing yet one that has remained constant almost throughout its history especially in regard to aggression and war. The ongoing lesson that the United States has learned from Yorktown to Pearl Harbor to 9/11 has been that we must be ever vigilant to protect our freedoms and sovereignty. While the tactics of defense and combat have varied substantially over the years, it can be argued that the present environment is fraught with the potential for terrorist threats of an even more sinister and unexpected nature. In my opinion, with the expected draw-down of troops in Iraq it would be a grave mistake to conclude that U.S. military forces are entering into an occasional purely peacekeeping posture. There will still be a substantial presence of U.S. forces deployed around the world in Afghanistan, Korea and elsewhere. Often separated by thousands of miles and for months on end from those they love, we must also be poised to address their material, physical and emotional concerns. I am happy to report that the Foundation continues to progress forward in many innovative ways. This includes facilitating free telephone talk time to connect military families; assisting with their financial problems due to rent, mortgage, utilities, vehicle repair, medical expenses and food/basic aid; and so forth. Let it be known that the Foundation has and will utilize your donation dollars to the highest standards of responsible accountability. I ask that you take a few moments to review the following Annual Report & Summary of Accomplishments, , which will give you a comprehensive overview of our operations and financial information. Finally, I offer my personal gratitude for your past support and I kindly request that you continue to remember those who make our nation safe and great! Sincerely, Richard L. Eubank Chairman of the Board 2

MISSION To support programs and services that secure manage and distribute resources to improve the lives of veterans, military service personnel, and their families and the communities where they live. VISION To memorialize the past so as to never let America forget the personal sacrifices of those who have defended its freedoms; yet always looking forward to honor and provide for those among us who through their military service are dedicated to maintaining our security and democratic way of life. 4
ENSURING THAT U.S. TROOPS, THEIR FAMILIES AND VETERANS ARE NEVER FORGOTTEN! The VFW Foundation, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit charity, is a natural and logical outgrowth of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. The Foundation manages a wide variety of programs (most with a national geographic emphasis) at no cost and no VFW membership required to those we serve. It is important to note that we receive no government funding. Thus, we depend on donations from corporations, foundations and individuals who believe as we do that our troops need to know that America cares. The Foundation continues to be the premier veterans service nonprofit organization. We are especially proud of the fact that our administrative costs are extremely low. Our organization has constantly adapted to the urgent-needs of U.S. troops, military families and veterans. Last fiscal year, we distributed approximately $5,000,000 to programs that directly met the needs of these deserving citizens. We have enhanced the Return the Favor campaign social media promotions on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. Shoppers were able to upload messages of support to troops on a dedicated page through the returnthefavor.org website. Additionally, the Foundation has cultivated ongoing relationships with SportClips, Burger King Franchisee owners, Hallmark and other companies, many of which have undertaken causemarketing efforts on our behalf. We have also continued associations with the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League and NASCAR, particularly as a way to provide information about our programs while at the same time allowing troops to experience an exciting sporting and entertainment venue. Fiscal Year promises to be a further meaningful evolution in the history of our organization. 5
OUR SUPPORT TO VFW PROGRAMS AND SERVICES: Assists families with rent, mortgage, utilities, vehicle repair, medical expenses, food and other basic needs through the VFW Unmet Needs program since 2004, nearly 3,000 families have received grants totaling over $4.2 million Allows troops to call home via VOIP, Voice Over Internet Protocol, on holidays such as Christmas, Valentine s Day, Mother s Day, etc. a typical Free Call Day averages between 90, ,000 conversations with more than 1 million connections made in 2010/11 Boosts morale through welcome home or sendoff events for military units including VIP treatment at sporting/entertainment venues Provides direct pro bono assistance by the VFW s National Veterans Service (NVS) officers to help veterans in their often difficult entitlement claims with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) actively pursues compensation for service-related injuries to veterans including PTSD and pledges to meet with all recently discharged troops from Iraq and Afghanistan as they return home via group dispersals 6
THE YEAR IN REVIEW Partnered with various Burger King Franchisee associations in numerous states to raise more than $460,000 for the VFW s Unmet Needs program. Received a $450,000 gift exceeding last year s donation by more than $100,000 from SportClips for VFW s Operation Uplink to support regular communications between U.S. troops abroad and their families back home. Secured nearly $150,000 in sponsorships for the 2011 VFW National Convention in San Antonio. Received $124,000 from the Target Corporation enabling 54 students, who were VFW State/Department winners of the Voice of Democracy essay competition winners, to travel to Washington D.C. in March. Raised $450,000 in contributions from the Combined Federal Campaign and state/local campaigns, exceeding last year s achievements. Raised more than $350,000 from other foundations. Partnered with Hallmark to distribute more than $600,000 worth of recordable story books and other Hallmark products for families of deployed troops in Iraq and Afghanistan through our giftsin-kind program. Broadened our Salute to Military Families program to boost the morale of the troops and military families by providing VIP treatment at entertainment and sporting venues, development of relationships with NASCAR race tracks, an increased partnership with the NFL s Kansas City Chiefs and designation of a game between the Chiefs and Buffalo Bills as Military Appreciation Game Day, which included many special events geared toward troop appreciation. Expanded our Return the Favor cause marketing and branding campaign to raise awareness of and funding of VFW programs and services that support military families and veterans. This includes securing agreements with companies such as Boulevard Brewing, Buffalo Wild Wings, Inc., Ol Glory Energy Drink, The Roasterie, Inc. (coffee), Empower Processing, and General Growth Management, Inc. Received a pledge from USAA, a banking and financial provider for troops, veterans and their families, to donate $250,000 each year for the next five years in support of the VFW Foundation s Return the Favor campaign. Assisted VFW Departments and Posts with fundraising that resulted in nearly $150,000 for their local projects. Received more than $30,000 in corporate matching gifts. Raised significant gifts to assist military families in financial emergencies through the VFW Unmet Needs program. It has now granted more than $4 million since 2004 to such families. Reached out to Kansas City-area foundations and corporations for financial support to address the needs of local homeless and financially disadvantaged veterans. Provided approximately $25,000 in VFW Foundation grants to other national nonprofit organizations that proactively assist veterans, troops and military families. Administered and improved an existing member benefits program that offers VFW members exclusive discounts with brand name providers in areas such as retail and travel. 7
