1 College of Education and Human Academic Innovation 424 Enhance the quality, relevance and sustainability of the academic program College of Education and Human Begin in a, 3.3a, 3.4a, portfolio. 3.4b, 3.4c, 3.4d 2 new programs were recently approved by CPE and will be offered beginning this fall Assess the region s workforce needs and future trends that could potentially impact these needs; review COEHS programs for alignment. Refine and/or develop new programs as appropriate. We will begin this work later in the summer/early fall Engage in a continuous improvement process to review each program s quality and relevance at least bi-annually. All of our programs engage in continuous improvement processes of some kind. An external review of the Ed.D. program was conducted in late spring. The report will be shared with the Ed.D. faculty at their August retreat and program revisions will be made based on the recommendations included in the report Maintain national accreditation for all applicable programs and explore accreditation options for currently non-accredited programs within our college. Institutional Excellence During Spring 2015, 5 teams were formed to begin work toward our CAEP accreditation review (teacher education/educational leadership) which will take place in Spring The CACREP interim report was completed and submitted late Spring. This summer the social work faculty are completing program review reports. The CAATE standards (Athletic training) are changing. A team meet to review the new standards and begin discussions about preparations that will be needed to address these required changes before the new standards are implemented in Wednesday, August 19, 2015 Page 1 of 5

2 430 Develop a development culture within and for our college. College of Education and Human Begin in b Some progress has been made toward our goal of creating a development culture within and for our college. This goal has received more focused attention since hiring our Director of Development Hire a Director of Development Cynthia Siddens was hired and began work on April 1, Create a Dean s Development Council with 3 purposes: fundraising, public relations, sounding board for ideas The director of development and the Dean have been meeting with individuals identified as key prospects for the Dean's Development Council. Four people have committed to serving so far, and we have meetings scheduled throughout the summer with other potential members of the council. Our goal is to have the council chair and 12 council members finalized by the end of August Identify college development priorities The Director of Development has been meeting with faculty, leadership team members, and others to collect input as to potential development priorities. She and the Dean have been meeting weekly since May to review and refine these items. At the upcoming (July 9) Leadership retreat, the leadership team will offer input Increase percentage of alumni, faculty and staff who contribute We are still gathering data related to this item, but have identified a goal of doubling overall contributions by Fall Update college policies and procedures and align them with the College of Education and Human Begin in a university s policies and procedures as they are updated. A team was assembled to review and update our College RPT policy. They met, made recommendations, and discussed their ideas with faculty at the end of spring college-wide meeting. We held off on the start time for this work to allow the Faculty Handbook Revision committee time to complete their recommendations so that our policy is in alignment with the university policy (once it is approved) Form a task force to review and update policies and procedures; review suggested revisions at college-wide meetings This task force will be formed at the August College-wide meeting Wednesday, August 19, 2015 Page 2 of 5

3 Student Success 419 Strengthen and integrate support services for an increasingly diverse College of Education and Human Begin in a, 1.2b, 1.4a student body. Significant progress was made on this goal, but there is more work to be done. The peer mentoring program was created and will continue to strengthen/grow. We have identified new areas for collaboration with area middle and high schools and have worked to develop those while continuing to look for new possibilities. We still need to develop and conduct a needs assessment that will provide additional insights into the needs of our students Develop and implement a college-specific needs assessment focusing particularly on graduate, non-traditional, and at-risk students to further clarify the obstacles and challenges these COEHS students face. To be developed in early fall and implemented in late fall Enhance current academic advising using research-informed student-centric strategies that focus on increasing student success and retention rates. Scheduled to begin in academic year. Research studies will be identified at the summer 2015 academic Advising retreat Create further collaborations with area high schools to offer COEHS major courses offcampus in order to attract a more diverse student body to NKU. We have numerous new collaborations that began this year: a new partnership with Cincinnati Public Schools, an embedded internship experience in Covington, programs in Newport, Boone County and Erlanger. Additionally, TE has been working with Kenton County Schools to develop a Future Teacher Academy that will begin this fall. Wednesday, August 19, 2015 Page 3 of 5

4 Support the expansion of a peer mentoring program, currently in development in the COEHS Advising Center, to support students in transition (first-time freshmen, transfer students, etc.). Talent Development Anna Stryker, COEHS Advising Center Director, worked with current COEHS student ambassadors and the academic advisors to recruit new students interested in becoming Peer Leaders. Anna then conducted 2 in depth training sessions with the Peer Leaders on the COEHS programs and information on working with students. The Peer Leaders then planned and participated in a number of activities over the Spring semester, including Calling all Majors where they called current first year freshman and transfer students around midterm to talk about their semester and encouraged them to make advising appointments. They also planned and participated in a final week s Snack and Chat event for COEHS students studying for finals; a place for them to come and reflect on their semester and healthy snacks were provided. 421 Develop or enhance the college-going culture in area school districts. College of Education and Human Begin in a, 2.6b Enhancing the college-going culture in regional school districts is increasingly a focus of our college-wide conversations and planning. It is one of our development priority areas (finding funding to support the efforts) and a proposal was submitted to Eric Gentry as part of a presentation to a group leaving a legacy gift. We have purchased 1500 COEHS banners to be hung in our partner schools and agencies, and to be provided to students when we bring them on campus for college awareness events. More of our programs are incorporating embedded programs in area schools - these will provide greater visibility and awareness about NKU. Additionally, we hosted Dreamfest in March 2015 and 1,143 area middle school youth participated in a day of enriching activities on NKU's campus Identify current COEHS program activities in the region s middle and high schools. We have identified the 400+ sites where our students have opportunities for experiential learning. We are beginning a focused effort to identify and map the types of programs, personnel/programs involved, and district/school, and demographics of the students involved starting this fall. 5 Collaborate with COEHS partners (and others as appropriate) to refine and enhance our middle and high school programs so that they will more effectively develop college-going cultures in the schools. This will be part of our on-going Teacher Education Committee (TEC) agenda for the upcoming year. This is also part of our CAEP preparation work- strengthening our partnerships, agreements, and identifying measures for assessing impact Identify a COEHS and/or departmental liaison to facilitate scheduling of these programs in our region s middle and high schools. Process to begin in late fall Collect data on at least an annual basis to assess the effectiveness/impact of these programs on the college-going cultures in area schools. As stated above, as part of our CAEP preparation we are identifying strategies and measures to assess impact of all of our programs - including development or enhancement of the college-going cultures in area school districts.
