Naturals Chapter 1
Our weaves Bouclé - tightly woven loops of different sizes Basketweave - a loosely woven criss-cross construction A chequerboard look with groups of warp and weft threads interlaced to make a criss-cross pattern. Panama - a flatter, relaxed loop of differing sizes Herringbone - a visual zigzag with variations in herringbone width So called because it looks like the skeleton of a herring, V-shaped herringbone gives a woven pattern often found in twills. Chapter 1
Naturals: Grasses Seagrass Seagrass is as textural and tropical as it gets. Grown in China and Vietnam, it s found in the coastal meadows on the banks of rivers. The crop is flooded by seawater during its growing cycle, harvested by hand, dried and hand spun into cords before being woven into flooring. Unlike coir or sisal, seagrass can t be bleached or dyed. The result is anything from a yellow green to a dark green depending on the time of harvest. It then changes colour and matures to the environment in which it has been fitted, where it weaves light into daily living. Please note, the thickness of the seagrass fibre can vary between batches. This means that there can be inconsistancies between different batches of the same weave. If you are concerned about the overall look of the specific flooring you are ordering, obtaining a stock cutting from alternative HQ would be recommended. Products Weaves Key Facts Seagrass Backing: latex Panama Basketweave Herringbone Bedroom/dining room/lounge. Slubs and irregularities in the weave are to be expected. Not suitable on stairs. Natural oils can make stairs slippery. Not suitable for damp areas including bathrooms. Damp can result in mould growth. Double-stick method recommended when fitting as temperature-sensitive. Colour may vary from roll to roll. Lifespan: five years subject to use. Chapter 1
Naturals Coir Full of warm, golden-hued wellbeing, coir comes from the tough fibres of the coconut husk found in Kerala, India. It s an authentic process in which fibres are removed by hand and softened in seawater. They re then either bleached or left in their natural golden colour ready to be woven into floor covering. Our designs come in Panama, Herringbone and Bouclé, in both the natural and bleached options. Superior Coir, a mixture of 67% coir (warp) and 33% sisal (weft), offers a blend suitable for areas of heavy use. Like the gently shifting seasons of its homeland, the colour of the coir can vary from roll to roll in hue, and will change once acclimatised to its living area. If fitted in direct sunlight, bleached coirs will lose their original colour and change to a darker, ginger shade. Certain coir carpets are available in 5m widths. Products Weaves Key Facts Coir Backing: latex Panama Bouclé Herringbone Bedroom/dining room/stairs/lounge/home office. Slubs and irregularities in the weave are to be expected. Don t use bleached coir in direct sunlight as the product will discolour. Not suitable for damp areas, including bathrooms. Damp can result in mould growth. Double-stick method recommended when fitting as temperature-sensitive. Lifespan: five years subject to usage. Chapter 1
Naturals Jute Soft as Goan sand and as uplifting as an Eastern sunrise, jute flooring has a tweedy look that brings texture and light to everyday life. The yarn comes from the stalk of the giant corchorous plants, grown in southern India. They re harvested by hand, tied in bundles and soaked in water. The stems are then pounded with wooden mallets and the resulting fibres spun into a beautiful yarn. The fibres are fine, making jute much more of a soft bedroom option than one for heavy-duty hall use. For full effect, dim the lights, ditch the footwear and add a few soulful sounds. Then there s the chunky Jute, for a even more cosy, snuggly option. Jute is naturally light brown and will fade in direct sunlight. All jute cuts are automatically treated with stain inhibitor before dispatch from our warehouse. Suitability rating is light domestic, not contract. Products Weaves Key Facts Jute Backing: latex Bouclé Herringbone Bedrooms or light use areas only. Slubs and irregularities in the weave are to be expected. Not for direct sunlight. Not suitable for damp areas including bathrooms. Damp can result in mould growth. Double-stick method recommended when fitting as temperature-sensitive Lifespan: five years subject to usage. Chapter 1
Naturals Sisal Spiritual and versatile, hardy and homely, sisal breezes in from Africa, Brazil and the Mexican Gulf, where it s extracted from the leaf of Agave Sisalana. Intricate, soft and exotic, sisal is the toughest natural fibre flooring in our range. It s equally at home welcoming guests in the hall and on the stairs* as it is dispensing heavy-duty family warmth in living areas. Dense, finely textured dark-green leaves are hand-picked before being crushed to get the pure white fibres known as sisal. Sisal fibres are then cleaned, dyed to almost any colour and then spun and woven into floorcoverings. Certain sisal carpets are available in 5m widths. *Subject to suitability Products Weaves Key Facts Sisal Backing: latex Bouclé Super Bouclé Panama Super Panama Basketweave Herringbone Most bedroom/dining room/stairs/lounge/home office (Bubbleweave and Super Panama bedroom/ dining room/lounge only). Slubs and irregularities in the weave are to be expected. Avoid areas of high moisture content. Double-stick method recommended when fitting as temperature-sensitive. Lifespan: eight years subject to usage. Chapter 1
As homely as hot chocolate on a winter day, wool carpets and rugs are both pleasurable and practical. Mostly made from 100% wool, our designs are classic, hardwearing and durable. Pure wool carpets are as warm and comforting as an open fire and also great for sound insulation. Certain wool carpets are available in 5m widths. The majority of our wool carpets are hessian backed. They re as suitable for a warm welcome in the hall as they are the rough n tumble of a family room. Wool Products Wool Backing: hessian or Action Bac Key Facts Medium domestic to heavy domestic; contract usage varies. Large-looped products not suitable on stairs. Traditional fitting except with flatweave products where the double-stick method is recommended. Lifespan: five years subject to usage. Chapter 1
Eco collection Nature & Nurture Our natural wool carpets offer wall-to-wall warmth that whispers its luxury across the coffee table. And now 100% natural just got even more planet friendly, with a little nurture added to the beauty of nature. Nature & Nurture, our eco collection, is the UK s first biodegradable carpet. Completely hand-woven on traditional carpet looms, the carpets come with woollen thread woven onto a base of cotton and jute and then backed with cotton secured with a layer of natural latex. Pushing the boundaries in eco-flooring, Nature & Nurture is natural and handmade. The irregularities of the collection give it character, charm and soul. That s endearing, but it s best to be aware of the following: Nature & Nurture are handcrafted products made on traditional carpet looms. The carpets are not machine-made - therefore, irregularities in the weave and pile height are to be expected. Owing to blending of natural yarns, colours can vary widely from batch to batch. If colour accuracy is critical, a stock cutting is advisable. Chapter 1
Runners Nothing says more about the Alternative Flooring ethos than our runners. They come packed with pattern in a crescendo of colour. In pre-cut widths, they re specifically designed as runners - to shave costs to a minimum and wage war on wastage. Quirky, stripey, natural or plain, and mixing a hip range of styles with complementary edging*, our runners don t stop at halls and stairs. They can be laid as carpet or rugs, or used as edging - there s serious fun to be had with these interiors options. Runners come in standard widths of 66cms, except Quirky (obviously), which weighs in at a quirky 69cms. There s an Alternative Flooring runner that speaks to everyone. And for ultimate personalisation? There s make me a rug (See Chapter 3). * Quirky runners have a selvedge as standard. Chapter 2
Runners The complete range This one will run and run. Our most popular carpets are now available as purpose-designed runners. This minimises wastage, so it s more economical all round. Standard runners come with a maximum length of seven linear metres. Our complete range and all information can be found in our Runnerways literature. Quirky - 69cm wide as standard with a selvedge; conventional fit. Wool Blocstripe - 66cm wide with a self-coloured whipped edge; conventional fit. Wool Pinstripe - 66cm wide with a self-coloured whipped edge; conventional fit. Rock n Roll - 66cm wide with a self-coloured whipped edge; conventional fit. Wool Cord - 66cm wide with a self-coloured whipped edge; conventional fit. Wool Iconic Stripe - 66cm wide with a self-coloured whipped edge; double-stick fitting method. Sisal Herringbone - 66cm wide with a self-coloured whipped edge; double-stick fitting method. Sisal Super Bouclé - 66cm wide with a self-coloured whipped edge; double-stick fitting method. Runners Quirky runners Made in Britain on traditional Wilton looms, our Quirky runners are sold by the linear metre. Made from 80% wool/20% nylon fibre, Quirky has a standard carpet width of 69cm. But there s nothing standard about the bold patterns. Choose from geometric diamonds (Tess), oversized spots (Dotty), traditional tartan (Fling) or zebra print (Skinny). Want to join up the Quirky runners to make wall-to-wall carpet? Now that s alternative. Be sure to have them seamed together by a qualified carpet fitter. Chapter 2

We make all rugs, runners and stair runners to order at our alternative HQ in Hampshire. As a rule, we ll always take the longest measurement to be the length. There s a surcharge for rugs and runners less than two metres in width or over seven metres in length. For the ultimate in personalisation, take advantage of our online make me a rug service. This handy feature offers the chance to mix and match from all our collection, border styles and border combinations - create and view the results on screen. We can handle unusual shapes, such as over 4 mitres/ corners or internal mitres (such as an L shape), depending on the size and dimensions. We can also make circular rugs. However, all unusual requests would need to be discussed and approved by our HQ before we can give a price. All leather borders are cut directly from the hide, so joins in the borders are to be expected. (amount showing on the surface of the rug) Self-coloured whipped border - overlock thread around the edge of the flooring. Single standard - total width 50mm: cotton, linen, natural jute, chenille, fishscales, stripe (thick & thin), herringbone, faux suede, faux leather and leather Double-narrow border - total width 70mm - inner border can only be a cotton border Double-wide border - total width 100mm - inner border can only be a cotton border Double-piped border - total width 55mm - the piping can only be made from a cotton border Double Piping - 55mm Double Narrow - 70mm Double Wide - 100mm Self Coloured Whipped We wouldn t be Alternative Flooring if we didn t offer custom-made rugs with a selected range of bindings. 15 Calculating the cost 1. Calculate the total area in square metres (M2) - multiply (A) by (B) i.e x 3.50 = 8.75 (M2). 2. Multiply the (M2) by the (M2) price for the chosen flooring. 3. Calculate total perimeter of the rug in linear metres (LM) - A + B + C + D - i.e = linear metres. 4. Multiply the total perimeter by the binding price. 5. Add the square-metre cost (2) to the binding cost (4). This is the cost of the rug. (B) 3.50m (A) 2.50m 8.75m 2 (C) Customers may find that the corners of new rugs may curl, this is quite common and is rectified by reverse rolling (pile side out) and leaving for a couple of days. The best way to get your rug to lay nice and flat is to complete this process along the length and then again along the width. (D) Information on our custommade rugs can be found in our Borderlines and Colourscapes literature. Chapter 3
Installation Installation technique for natural fibre floorcoverings: double-stick method (As approved by Mike Whale, Master NICF Fitter) This is the recommended fitting technique for natural fibre floorcoverings supplied by Alternative Flooring. If this method is not carried out as specified, no claims for shrinkage, bubbling etc. will be considered. Please also pay attention to the suitability of each of the floorcoverings, as no claims will be accepted if the flooring is fitted in an unsuitable location. Pre-installation process Before you start fitting, please ensure: 1. The sub-floor is dry, level, sound and dust-free and prepared to British Standards (BS 5325: 2001) 2. You check the floor covering to ensure it is the correct material, the right size and there are no visible defects. Irregularities in the weave, colour variations, slubs, tufts and knots are part of the natural charm of the product and as such are not manufacturing defects or valid cause for complaint. Check the flooring is acceptable BEFORE CUTTING. Remember, once you have cut the floorcovering, you have agreed that the floorcovering is acceptable. Please refer to our terms and conditions. 3. The flooring is acclimatised in the area it is to be laid for at least 48 hours. This involves unwrapping and loosely rolling the flooring. 4. There are no sources of excessive moisture in the area the floorcovering is to be laid, e.g. damp walls. Chapter 4
Installation process Alternative Flooring recommends only the following double-stick method for installing our natural fibre floorcoverings. 1. Fix short pin or blind (no pins) gripper around the perimeter of the room. Allow a gully, approximately 2/3 the thickness of the carpet, between the gripper and the wall/skirting to allow for bolstering later. 2. Apply tackifier (e.g. F Ball F40) to the floor with a roller or trowel as per the manufacturer s instructions. When the tackifier has dried, lay the underlay into the tackifier and tape up the joints in the underlay with single-sided tape. Suggested underlays are Tredaire Contract or Duralay s Durafit. 2a. Alternatively, if the floor is boarded, you might need to prepare it with plywood. The underlay can be fixed with a 75mm band of permanent adhesive around the perimeter then fully stapled at mm centres and joints taped with single-sided tape. 3. Roll out the floorcovering over the underlay and rough-cut, allowing at least 6cm oversize all around. (Please note the floorcovering must have been acclimatised in the area it is to be laid for at least 48 hours. This can be done at this stage or before starting the installation, but it must be carried out before the next stage.) 4. Fold back the floorcovering by 50% of its area and, using a 2mm X 6mm V notch trowel (3mm X 6mm for coir) apply the permanent adhesive to the underlay (e.g. F Ball F3). Take care to allow the trowel to glide over the underlay, as too much downward pressure on to the trowel will reduce the effectiveness of the notch size to apply the correct quantity of adhesive. (Always follow the manufacturer s instructions.) 5. Now lay the floorcovering back into the adhesive. Then fold back the other half and repeat step Use a 15 kg glider over the entire floor area to ensure adequate transfer of adhesive to the back of the floorcovering. 7. When the adhesive has grabbed the floorcovering, trim off the excess around the perimeter with a straight blade or scissors and bolster down into the gully left by the gripper. 8. For extra security, you can staple the floorcovering on to the gripper using an electric stapler, e.g. Maestri. 9. Any exposed edges at doorways etc. must be protected with either metal door bars or wooden threshold trips. Chapter 4
Installation on stairs Please refer to product suitability to check that it is recommended for use on stairs. Alternative Flooring will not consider any complaints for floorcoverings fitted on stairs that we have not recommended for this purpose. 1. Fit blank or short-pinned gripper to the tread and riser at the crotch of the stair. The gripper should leave a space approx. 1.5 times the thickness of the floor covering, to allow the floorcovering to be bolstered in later. 2. Lay a suitable underlay (e.g. Tredaire Contract) from the gripper on the tread over the nosing of the stair and down to the gripper on the riser. Please refer to the diagram. The underlay should be stuck using a permanent adhesive, (e.g. F Ball F3). Alternatively, it can be fixed by stapling at the back of the step, along the front of the step and over the riser. 3. Using a permanent adhesive (e.g. F Ball F3), fix the floor covering to the underlay on the tread and bolster tightly into the gap between the gripper into the crotch of the stairs. 4. If required, you can staple the floorcovering under the nose using an electric stapler (e.g. Maestri) and also onto the grippers for added security. In areas of heavy use or in contract situations, Alternative Flooring recommends using stair nosings. Underfloor heating We are unable to guarantee any of our floorings when used with underfloor heating as they have not been independently tested for such use. We are aware that the thinner floorings, such as Sisal Bouclé, have very low thermal resistances and therefore, in theory, should be usable with underfloor heating. Many of our other customers have used this product without a problem. If you decide to go ahead and install over underfloor heating, you would need to consult with your fitter in relation to the type of underlay they would use. That s because the flooring would still have to be fitted using the recommended double-stick method, and the underlay would need to have a low thermal resistance to ensure the underfloor heating was still effective. Chapter 4
Care and cleaning Natural fibre flooring Care and cleaning We do not recommend using water or steam extraction for natural fibre plant floorcoverings. Natural fibres such as jute, coir, seagrass and sisal contain natural colouring that is not colourfast. Jute can be particularly susceptible to colour loss through bleaching. For natural fibre floorcoverings, we recommend using suction-only vacuums. Continuous use of models with brushes can distort the fibres of natural fibre floorcoverings over time. Vacuum slowly and thoroughly. For small areas, it is possible to use our Natural Flooring Care Kit* with caution. To avoid spots, spills and stains from becoming permanent, clean them up as soon as they occur. Please be aware that some things can immediately stain (or remove colour from) the floorcovering permanently and this can not be reversed. If you are entertaining, don t wait until your guests have gone - speed is of the essence. (continued overleaf) * Available from alternative HQ Chapter 5
Care and cleaning Natural fibre flooring (cont) Remember: the colour in natural fibre floorcoverings is not colourfast and some colour loss can occur. Usually, this is slight and much more acceptable than the spill or soiled area. If in any doubt, carry out a test with the care kit in an inconspicuous area of the floorcovering. Other liquid household products designed for spot removal should not be used on natural fibre flooring and can permanently damage your floorcovering. Occasionally, the care kit will have a bleaching effect on natural floorcoverings if left to dry for too long. Ensure that you follow the instructions for carpet cleaning without allowing the care kit to remain on the natural floorcovering for more than ten minutes. The Natural Flooring Care Kit is available to buy from alternative HQ. For larger areas of cleaning, contact a Host professional in your area by calling Care and cleaning Wool flooring Use doormats To control the amount of dirt tracked into your home, use doormats at entrances. Vacuum them twice a week and use the care kit to clean them. Regular vacuuming and cleaning will enable mats to keep trapping dirt before it gets to your carpet. Don t let mats become a source of tracked-in dirt. Vacuum For best results, vacuum carpets two to three times a week - every day if possible. Initially for wool carpets, we recommend a vacuum cleaner with brushes, to remove any surface fluffing. After a few weeks, switch off the brushes or use a suction-only vacuum. Concentrate on the areas where people walk most often, such as in front of doorways, hallways, around living-room furniture and in front of the TV. Make a minimum of three passes with your vacuum in these areas. Make sure drive belts are in good condition and ensure that bags are emptied or changed regularly. Even a half bag will reduce the efficiency of the vacuum cleaner. Chapter 5
Care and cleaning Wool flooring Never use detergents such as dishwashing liquids, soaps or other cleaners recommended for general household use. Although they may clean the carpet satisfactorily, they will almost certainly cause problems such as rapid resoiling, colour bleeding or other damage to the pile or backing of the carpet. Our Natural Flooring Care Kit is safe to use on all of our carpets. It comprises of Host granules and spot remover. It is a soft natural product that is environmentally friendly. The tiny granules are moistened with water based detergent and a small amount of safe to use solvent. Like a sponge, they dissolve, absorb and trap soil, spots and odours as they are brushed through the carpet. Care and cleaning How to clean a wet spot 1. Blot the spot with a clean, absorbent white towel or clean white paper cloths. Continue until no more liquid or colour transfers from the spot onto the towel/cloth. 2. Brush in a small number of Host granules using the brush provided. Brush in all directions, north/south and east/west, then sprinkle the area with more Host granules. Do not scrub - let the Host cleaner do the job. 3. Leave the Host compound to rest on the area for NO LONGER than 10 minutes and then vacuum. 4. If traces of the spot remain, use the spot remover sparingly on a white towel and dab into the area. 5. Repeat steps 2 to 4 if necessary. Chapter 5
Care and cleaning How to clean a dry spot 1. Place a small handful of Host granules over the spot. 2. Using the brush provided, gently brush the Host granules through the carpet. 3. Brush in all directions, north/south and east/west. Do not scrub - let the Host cleaner do the job. 4. Leave for NO LONGER than 10 minutes and then vacuum. 5. Wash the brush under warm water. Soak up liquids with white kitchen roll, tissues, toilet roll or clean cloth. 2. Scoop up or scrape off solids. 3. Try to identify unknown spots before treatment. If unsure, use the liquid spot remover first. 4. Always work from the edge of the spot inwards. 5. BLOT - don t rub. 6. Use small quantities of the liquid spot remover at a time, applied to a cloth - NOT directly to the spot. Work into the spot with a small, soft brush or sponge. 7. When using solvents, always ensure there is plenty of fresh-air ventilation. 8. Always thoroughly rinse out water-based spotters with clean water. 9. Dry the spot, if possible, with a hair dryer. Chapter 5
INTEC Stain inhibitor INTEC is a solvent free, environmentally friendly solution which, if requested, is applied to carpets/rugs/ runners in our warehouse before dispatch. There will be a charge for this service. INTEC has been specially developed for natural floorcoverings and will not alter the product s colour, texture or flame retardancy. It s a water-based, resinous co-polymer formula that contains no harmful solvents. INTEC will reduce the impact of liquid spillages and also prolong the life of the flooring. Please note, even if the product has been treated with INTEC, we would still recommend that any spillages are treated as soon as possible with one of our Natural Flooring Care Kits* to avoid a mark being left. * Available from alternative HQ Chapter 5
Frequently asked questions... Why can t water be used on natural fibre floorings? Unfortunately, natural-fibre floorings, such as sisal, may mark if water is spilt on them. The degree of mark that is left will depend on what is spilt and how quickly it is treated. We would always suggest having one of our Natural Flooring Care Kits to hand in case of any spillages. Why are grass floorings not recommended for stairs? Grass contains its own natural oils so, when it s used on stairs, it could become slippery. It s also not the most hardwearing of the natural-fibre floorings and, therefore, may not last as long as a sisal or coir. Can I put natural fibre flooring in a bathroom or kitchen? We would be cautious about recommending the use of our flooring in these areas. Natural flooring can be sensitive to any change in environment or atmosphere - if fitted in an area where there is constant change in temperature, such as a bathroom or kitchen, the product may move or shrink. We would also be cautious because natural fibre flooring can mark with liquid spillages. Will there be a problem with moth infestation? From our research, natural fibre flooring is naturally moth proofed - moths just don t like the taste of the coarse plant fibres. Most of our wool carpets have been treated with moth proofing, except the eco collection, which has been specifically designed to be chemical free. Would natural fibre flooring be suitable for someone with allergies? It would all depend on the individual person and their sensitivity. Our natural floorings are made from 100% natural plant fibres and, although the sisal floorings are dyed, most are not treated with any further chemicals. However, you may find that sensitivity will occur with the latex backing that we use on all of our natural plant fibre floorings. The latex is a mixture of natural latex and synthetics. Most of the wool carpets are made from 100% pure wool but, again, may have been dyed or treatments such as moth proofing may have been applied. There is also a chance that chemical adhesives have been used to secure the backing to the carpet fibre. The eco collection has been specifically designed to have a 100% natural backing as well as not having any chemical additions to the wool fibre. Chemical sensitivities are a very personal thing - and we cannot make any guarantees. Perhaps ordering a larger sample from alternative HQ would be a good place to start? Chapter 6
What else do I need to know? Different widths Cuts of the same flooring allocated to different widths are not guaranteed to be a colour match, as they will have come from different production batches. With some natural-fibre floorings, there can also be a textural and construction difference as they will have been made on different looms. These differences could be significant. If colour/batch match is crucial, we would suggest taking all cuts from the same width. Flatweave Wool Attempting to join or seam a flatweave wool is not recommended. Where possible we would suggest only installing as a single width. Environment All our products come from sustainable natural resources. Suitability Please be aware of the specific product s suitability. Certain products aren t recommended for heavy-traffic areas, stairs or damp areas such as bathrooms. Please refer to product labelling, our website or our brochure for advice. Swatch service We can send swatch samples of any of our carpets or borders*. We ll just need the product code and an address. We take requests by , telephone, fax or from our website. * A charge may be applicable. Naturalness Natural flooring s charm lies in its texture. All our products are made from natural fibres. That means that slubs, tufts and irregularities in the weave are to be expected. Healthy Natural plant fibre flooring has anti-static properties. It s not prone to the off-gassing that afflicts many man-made fibre carpets. Chapter 6
