2 Honorary Doctorate Recipients For well over a century, the American University of Beirut has been awarding honorary doctorates to prominent individuals who have distinguished themselves in their respective fields of endeavor and whose actions resonate with the University s ideals and mission. This year, for the first time, we have the pleasure of sharing this significant event with our graduating students and their families, as we bestow honorary doctorates during the main commencement exercises, rather than in a separate ceremonial event. The six individuals being honored in 2011 are briefly introduced below: Mostafa Amr El-Sayed is a prominent Egyptian-American physical chemist and nanoscience researcher currently the Julius Brown Chair, Regents Professor, and head of the prestigious award-winning Laser Dynamics Laboratory at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Owen Jay Gingerich is professor emeritus of astronomy and the history of science at Harvard University and senior astronomer emeritus at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. He directed the AUB Observatory from 1955 to Lebanese Marcel Michel Khalifé s powerful oud playing, songs, and music for orchestra, dance, and film are well-known throughout the world. His powerful songs reflect his protest in the name of justice and human rights. Mary Robinson, the first female president of the Republic of Ireland and later the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, now directs her own human rights organization emphasizing the environment and climate justice. Lebanese-American journalist Anthony Shadid, currently Beirut bureau chief of The New York Times, has covered the Middle East for more than 15 years and has won two prestigious Pulitzer Prizes for his incisive reporting. 3 Hippocratic Oath In our profession it is a custom, established more than two thousand years ago, that all those admitted to the honors of the profession must first expressly take upon themselves its obligations. Now, therefore, in behalf of your elders, I call upon you to take, as we have taken before you, the oath which bears the name of Hippocrates. I do solemnly promise in the presence of God to be true to this declaration. I will be loyal to the ideals of the profession of Medicine and to its tradition of service to all human beings. I will follow that treatment which according to my ability and judgment I consider for the benefit of my patients, and will abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous. I will give no deadly medicine to anyone if asked, nor will I perform an abortion or any operation for a criminal purpose. Nightingale Pledge I solemnly pledge myself before God and in the presence of this assembly to pass my life in purity and to practice my profession faithfully. I will abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous, and will not take or knowingly administer any harmful drug. I will do all in my power to maintain and elevate the standard of my profession and will hold in confidence all personal matters committed to my keeping and all family affairs coming to my knowledge in the practice of my profession. With loyalty will I endeavor to aid the physicians in their work and devote myself to the welfare of those committed to my care. In the presence of epidemics or other danger I will not allow fear of personal harm to turn me from my duty. Whatever I see or hear in the lives of people which ought not to be spoken abroad I will keep secret. In whatsoever house I enter, it shall be for the benefit of the sick to the utmost of my power, holding myself aloof from any act of corruption. In purity and uprightness I will pass my life and practice my Art. While I continue to keep this oath inviolate may it be granted to me to enjoy life and the practice of the Art respected by people in all times. 4 5

4 The Engineer s and Architect s Oath Using the heritage left by my professional forebears, I dedicate myself to the pursuit of knowledge and the search for truth in the extension of the benefits of my profession to humanity. I will strive always to disseminate what professional knowledge I acquire. And I will fully accept my responsibility for the instruction of younger members of my profession. Zealous of the high repute of my calling, I will strive to protect the interests and the good name of any member of my profession. In all, I pledge integrity and fair dealing, tolerance and respect, and devotion to the standards and dignity of my profession. I gladly accept the obligation to use my special knowledge and expertness to serve humanity with complete sincerity. I will strive faithfully to fulfill the solemn obligations of my profession and to govern my life and practice by its Canons of Ethics.
