That is the premise of HP ConvergedSystem 900 large scale portfolio for SAP HANA. SAP HANA in-memory database provides lower latency to information when combined with HP ConvergedSystem 900 portfolio for SAP HANA configurations that provide increasing processing power, memory size, and networking capability to process and relocate very large volumes of information quickly. Executive summary The HP ConvergedSystem 900 for SAP HANA is designed to handle very large, complex SAP environments in single-node configurations certified up to 12TB and 16-sockets within a single in-memory pool. This system was designed for missioncritical high availability, management, consolidation, scale, and data protection. HP ConvergedSystem for SAP HANA allows customers to drive the entire business in real time. The fully-vetted hardware and software infrastructure is then certified by SAP. In order to be useful, SAP HANA requires integration into your environment and applications by skilled professionals. The purchase of HP ConvergedSystem 900 for SAP HANA Scale-up Configurations includes the assembly and test of the solution before shipment, on-site installation and configuration, the full startup of SAP HANA, and ongoing proactive support and services available as you need them. Loading operational data and integration with your applications are additional to this effort. It is important for the success of your SAP HANA implementation to engage the HP sales team to plan the extract, transform, and loading of data into SAP HANA, as well as integration with your applications. Management and In-Memory Compute servers The HP ConvergedSystem 900 for SAP HANA Scale-up Configurations are managed by the HP ProLiant DL380p Gen8 Server. The in-memory computing components are contained within the HP BladeSystem Superdome Enclosure. These have 2 Intel Xeon E v2 (2.8GHz/15-core/37.5MB/155W) processors per blade, with 4 blades / 120 cores or 8 blades / 240 cores available. The HP ProLiant DL380p Gen8 Server (for management) and the HP BladeSystem Superdome Enclosure (for in-memory computing) are enterprise-grade x86 offerings with breakthrough performance, network and storage redundancy for rock-solid reliability, and compelling consolidation and manageability efficiencies. This technology is ideal for mission-critical enterprise, business intelligence, and database applications. 2

3 The SAP HANA platform, running on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, provides the basis to dramatically increase the performance of your applications. Enterprises are quickly adopting SAP HANA as they value the ability to aggregate and analyze data in real-time. HANA compression, in-memory caching, and connections to big data technologies provide key elements in the formula for faster response times. High Performance and Availability Storage An in-memory database requires high performance data and log storage to preserve the integrity and availability of information across shutdown and fail-over scenarios. The HP ConvergedSystem 900 for SAP HANA Scale-up Configurations rely on HP 3PAR StoreServ 7400 storage and HP networking switches to best meet this requirement. Each compute node is connected through redundant storage area network (SAN) paths to the highly available HP 3PAR StoreServ storage unit with redundant controllers. The 8-socket HP ConvergedSystem 900 contains an HP 3PAR StoreServ node controller with ninety-six 900GB SAS disks, while the 16-socket configuration contains 2 HP 3PAR StoreServ node controller servers with one-hundredninety-two 900GB SAS disks each with redundancy choices for maximum availability and performance. Target audience This paper is intended for technical solution architects, IT managers, decision makers and HANA system administrators who want to learn more about HP ConvergedSystem 900 for SAP HANA Scale-up Configurations with HP 3PAR StoreServ storage. Solution overview HP and SAP have joined forces to deliver SAP HANA in-memory database in a resilient highly available configuration. This compelling database technology brings a new and exciting foundation for business innovation. In-memory platforms represent a technological shift in the way companies deal with data because it enables the processing of massive quantities of real-time data in server main memory to provide significantly faster query results. The ConvergedSystem 900 for SAP HANA Scale-up Configurations may be positioned as an operational data platform, or as a sidecar 1 configuration for analytics. With ConvergedSystem 900 portfolio for SAP HANA, you have some great choices. This paper describes the scale-up configuration that uses HP 3PAR StoreServ 7400 storage technology that provides high availability features, for example, mesh-active architecture, intelligent data striping, and Persistent Cache in four node configurations eliminates performance impacts that result from unplanned component failures. 1 A sidecar scenario is where HANA is a secondary database that is periodically loaded with the tables necessary for off-line queries. These queries take advantage of all the benefits and speed enhancements of HANA, yet the existing business infrastructure stays intact and operational. 3

5 Storage The SAP HANA data and log partitions for each instance are directly serviced by the HP 3PAR nodes through the redundant SAN ports and use the SAP storage API to manage the mounting of these volumes. The HANA shared directory is managed by the NFS servers; that directory is also mounted from a volume on the HP 3PAR storage. Storage nodes and ports Each HP BladeSystem Superdome Enclosure is paired with one or two HP 3PAR StoreServ 7400 units that have four controllers for maximum performance and redundancy. Each 7400 hosts ninety-six 900GB serial attached SCSI (SAS) 10K RPM disks. The high performance of the 7400 is required to support and sustain the high throughput and provide the assurance of data integrity required of today s enterprise class databases. Figure 3 shows a front view of the 7400 with the disk cartridges, and a rear view with the SAN and LAN ports, controller interconnects, and management ports. These controllers operate in pairs, but share all the metadata and pathways to the disks to provide high availability and redundant paths. Virtual Service Processor Each 7400 is matched with a virtual service processor (VSP) running on the management server using Microsoft Hyper-V Server The VSP is composed of a Linux operating system and the VSP software, and it exists as a single undivided entity. This service processor is important for setup, monitoring health, preserving performance statistics, and providing high levels of service using predictive support analysis and a call home support link. The service processors are not part of the data operational chain, therefore redundancy is not required. The HP 3PAR Service Processor is an integral component in the HP 3PAR Secure Service Architecture. The HP 3PAR Service Processor provides secure service communication between the HP 3PAR storage system and the central management console, enabling secure diagnostic data transmission and remote service connections. Diagnostic data can be transferred frequently and maintained centrally on a historical basis. As a result, manual intervention in the support process is minimized and proactive fault detection and analysis is enhanced. Furthermore, with remote service connectivity for troubleshooting, HP support can deliver faster, with more reliable response and quicker resolution time. 5

7 LAN switches Two HP 5900AF-48XG-4QSFP+ high density ultra-low latency top of rack (ToR) Ethernet switches provide redundant paths for the configuration s high availability traffic. This LAN switch has 48 fixed 1/10GbE SFP+ ports for device traffic and 4 QSFP+ 40GbE ports. 2 Figure 5 shows a rear view. Figure 5: LAN switch rear view HP 5900 Switch Series enables scaling of the server edge with 1GbE and 10GbE ToR deployments to new heights with highdensity 48-port solutions delivered in a 1U design; the high server port density is backed by 40GbE QSFP+ uplinks to deliver the availability of needed bandwidth for demanding applications. The ports on these switches are assigned to virtual LANs as appropriate for the traffic. The LAN switches management and serial ports are on the front of the LAN switch as show in Figure 6. Figure 6: LAN switch front view Central Management Server An HP ProLiant DL380p Gen8 server hosts the Central Management Server (CMS) and acts primarily as an access point to the configuration; support access to the other components of the configuration is available through this single entry point. This simplifies the network and connectivity to different devices within the configuration. Figure 7 shows the rear view of the CMS server. The CMS hosts the management console for 3PAR StoreServ 7400, and other appliance management and support tools. These are deployed as Virtual Machines using Microsoft Hyper-V. The Virtual Service Processor (VSP) is designed to provide remote error detection and reporting and to support diagnostic and maintenance activities involving the storage systems. The VSP is composed of a Linux operating system and the VSP software, and it exists as a single undivided entity. 8 Support software and access HP support, if requested, may access the HP ConvergedSystem 900 for SAP HANA Scale-up Configurations through the CMS via the management network during a virtual classroom with appropriate customer administration personnel. HP Insight Remote Support (Insight RS) is a software solution that supports the HP ConvergedSystem 900 portfolio for SAP HANA and enables reactive and proactive remote support to improve the availability of supported servers, storage systems, and other devices in your data center. Insight RS relies on several HP components and communication between various software applications within the customer enterprise and between the customer enterprise and HP to deliver support services. Agent software components are installed on the HANA and auxiliary servers providing a holistic management for both virtual and physical environments. Also, HP ProActive Insight Architecture solutions with ilo Management Engine is a suite of embedded management technologies that supports the complete lifecycle of all HP ProLiant Gen8 servers, from initial deployment to ongoing management and service alerting. The ilo Management Engine is a key component of the end-to-end HP Insight Management server management portfolio, along with HP Insight Control and HP Insight Online. Together they provide the most comprehensive set of server management capabilities in the industry. Services All configurations in the HP ConvergedSystem 900 portfolio for SAP HANA come standard with Factory Express Level 4 services that leverage HP factory integration capabilities and skills on SAP HANA. These include installation of SUSE Linux operating system software and SAP software at the factory, and on-site installation of the configuration. HP helps you reduce your deployment time with hardware built to your exact specifications, and tested as a complete solution, then shipped as a turn-key solution from the HP factory ready-to-run in your data center. This means you receive a preintegrated, pre-tested, ready-to-use solution. The goal is to put our expertise to work for your business, saving you time, money, and resources while it frees your staff to focus on your core business. Once the configuration is purchased, a process is started. (To order, please contact your HP sales representative.) A site preparation document with all the pertinent information is filled in that is required to assemble and configure the configuration to conform to the site environment The configuration is assembled, racked, cabled, software is loaded, and the configuration is tested at the HP Factory Express integration facility The configuration is carefully packaged and shipped to the site. An HP Customer Engineer unpacks the configuration, moves it into location, and connects it to the site. An HP team is engaged to assist with final configuration and bringing HANA online. After this point, if additional service engagements have been ordered, these services may take over to help extract, transform, and load data from existing systems into HANA and help integrate HANA with existing systems. Licensing considerations The software that requires licensing in this configuration follows: SAP HANA In-Memory Database SAP HANA Studio HP ProLiant Support Pack SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 11 SP3 HP Insight Remote Support (optional) All configurations in the HP ConvergedSystem 900 portfolio for SAP HANA contain a copy of the SAP In-Memory Appliance software by SAP. Each SAP product is subject to its respective SAP end-user license agreement. The HP computer product license does not contain a license to SAP In-Memory Appliance software by SAP. Please be advised that you have no right to use and that you are not licensed to use the copy of the SAP In-Memory Appliance software by SAP contained in the HP computer system until you have purchased or have available for use the appropriate license from SAP or its authorized distributors. Contact your SAP representative to obtain the applicable license rights to use the SAP software. The necessary SUSE SLES licenses are included with the purchase of an HP ConvergedSystem 900 for SAP HANA configuration. HP Serviceguard licenses for the NFS servers are included. 8
