1 North Louisiana Counselor Education Fall Conference Presented by Family Solutions Counseling Center Entire Conference will be held at: West Monroe Convention Center 901 Ridge Ave West Monroe, LA Dates: October 15 & October 16, 2015 Thursday October 15 th Agenda: Program Title: Working with Heterosexual Married Christian Couples: A model integrating faith-based foundational principles with skill building techniques. Presenter: Daniel W. Prior, Ph.D., LMFT, LPC-S Program Description: This interactive presentation will examine a short-term model for working with traditional Christian couples who are struggling within their marriages. Participants will learn the faithbased foundational concepts that are reviewed with couples, an object-focused technique used to examine family of origin issues within each couple, and a basic communication process that couples practice during and between sessions. 1. Learn 2 ways to visualize Christian marriage 2. Review the Biblical (foundational) concepts of prayer, touch, compassion/forgiveness, validation, and submission within the context of marriage 3. Examine one non-threatening technique for exploring family of origin issues within a marriage. 4. Learn how to incorporate an active listening technique as a substituted for a cyclically ineffective couple communication practice. Start Time: 8:00am End Time: 10:00am hours
2 Program Title: Affecting Change in a System Starts with Oneself Presenter: David Hale, Ph.D., LMFT-S Program Description: What is often overlooked by clients in therapy who want someone close to them to change a particular behavior, or set of behaviors, is the ability of the client to affect change in that person by changing their own behavior. Too often, therapists are even unaware that change begins with the client. This presentation will address a systemic strategy for promoting change in a system by addressing how the client can start the change process by behaving differently. This will be accomplished through case examples and open discussion. 1. Gain an understanding of how our interactions can affect change without even being aware we are doing so. 2. Recognize repeated failed attempts we all fall into while trying to get someone to change their behavior. 3. Have knowledge of a strategy to promote change that involves changes beginning with the client. Start Time: 10:15am End Time: 12:15pm Program Title: Overcoming Resistance with Mandated Clients: Strategies and Solutions Presenter: Robb Ward, M.S., LPC Program Description: Drug Court is a 12 month (minimum) diversion program for non-violent drug offenders which serves an alternative to (typically long) jail sentences. The program has two parts which work together: probation (legal) and rehabilitation (therapeutic). The therapeutic arm of the program consists of both individual and group counseling sessions as well as a weekly AA meeting run by the clients themselves while the probation arm includes drug testing, verification of employment or community service (at least 32 hours per week) or full time education (trade school or university level) as well as court appearances and all associated fees. Upon completion of the program the client's record is expunged of the charge(s) for which he/she was convicted of as well as hopefully a new sober lifestyle. 1. The attendees will be able to define resistance (in all its various forms); 2. The attendees will learn techniques/strategies for overcoming said resistance; and 3. The attendees will learn to utilize the specific use of humor as a powerful strategic tool for neutralizing resistance in all its forms.

The ABC model developed by Albert Ellis has been used extensively in many of the CBT models and is an effective way to conceptualize how people come to react emotionally and behaviorally to their circumstances. REBT is based on the philosophical premise that it is not the external circumstances that people experience that cause emotional disturbance, but the interpretation and evaluation that the person attributes to them. REBT is a practical, logical model that is highly steeped in philosophy. It is flexible enough to enable the therapist to adjust interventions to client need and preference. 1. Participants will be introduced to the philosophical underpinnings of REBT. 2. Participants will understand and be able to use the ABC model of REBT as a core component of therapy.
6 3. Participants will consider how REBT is used to address a variety of disorders/ clinical presentations. Start Time: 4:00pm End Time: 6:00pm
