3 bfu Swiss Council for Accident Prevention Founded in 1938, the bfu is a private foundation and politically independent. The bfu has a legal mandate to prevent nonoccupational accidents and to coordinate the prevention measures of all those concerned. Today, the bfu is considered to be the Swiss Competence and Coordination Centre for Accident Prevention in the sectors of road traffic, sport, home and leisure. Together with its partners, the bfu campaigns daily for greater importance to be given to accident prevention and motivates them to get involved. We keep people safe! Brigitte Buhmann Director 3

5 Fewer accidents lower costs The number of accidents per year in Switzerland is too high: Non-occupational accidents in Switzerland, 2011 Fatalities Total Road traffic Sport Home and leisure Total By means of accident prevention, the bfu aims to prevent deaths and injuries and reduce the annual effective cost of 10.5 billion Swiss francs caused by non-occupational accidents. 7 We work for your safety Road traffic The bfu promotes a safe, traffic-related infrastructure and influences general legal parameters. It campaigns for a reduction in drink driving, for the observation of speed limits and for the wearing of seat belts. Sport The bfu is committed to a safer sports infrastructure. It promotes safety standards in organised sport and a responsible individual approach to risk. Home and leisure The bfu campaigns for safety inside and outside buildings (e.g. non-slip floors, railings and playgrounds). It awards the bfu safety label for products designed to prevent accidents. Product safety On behalf of SECO, the bfu is the supervisory body for products in the non-occupational sector. 7

9 Quality work in science and practice The bfu s work is focused entirely on accident prevention. The bfu carries out research and provides the basic scientific principles. The bfu educates and passes on prevention skills to specialists. The bfu advises and creates safe systems. The bfu communicates and conducts safety campaigns. The bfu is networked to strengthen preventive effects with its partners. To promote efficient accident prevention, the bfu develops priority programmes and invites prevention partners to participate. The bfu has been awarded the "Committed to Excellence" certificate in line with the EFQM model.

11 Prevention as an ongoing task It is a fact that many accidents are avoidable. The bfu therefore does its utmost to research into the causes of hazards and to reduce accident risk by means of active prevention work. bfu accident prevention work is effective as it is based on an effect-oriented prevention cycle. All measures are scientifically-based and implemented in cooperation with partners. 13 Living safely everyone can contribute The bfu passes on its knowledge to partners and coordinates prevention measures with them. The bfu has developed a unique network for accident prevention in cities and municipalities its 1200 bfu safety delegates. These are the link between the bfu and the population. It provides company-based safety delegates with information to ensure that non-occupational accident prevention is also a topic for leisuretime activities. Working with 500 police traffic instructors, the bfu is also committed to children s safety. The bfu fosters contact with numerous other partners such as: associations and institutions, the media, schoolteachers and many different professional groups. There is also a continuous exchange of information with global institutions similar to the bfu. 13

17 Efficient accident prevention The bfu employs a staff of 125. Its organisation chart combines fields of work with core competences. This enables efficient and effectorientated operation.
