Near universal agreement among nursing s academic leaders re: value of DNP education in preparing APRNs. Master s degree remains dominant route into APRN practice. Schools with or planning a BSN-DNP (27%) intend to close their master s level APRN programs. Approximately 30% of nursing schools with APRN programs now offer BSN-DNP, and this proportion will climb to greater than 50% within the next few years. 4 Begin to Articulate You as the Product Articulate value and quality of product (you) Describe role/practice you are interested in and why Emphasize unique NP/DNP characteristics Develop written description of role and responsibilities Add specifics for YOU Resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV) CV -used primarily when applyingfor academic, academic clinical, scientific or research positions Differences between a CV and a resume CV is a longer, more detailed synopsis of background and skills CV includes a summary of educational and academic backgrounds as well as teaching and research experience, publications, presentations, awards, honors, affiliations and other details May need different versions of a CV for different types of positions CV Verses Resume Entry level resumes are usually limited to 1-2 pages Goal of a resume is to construct a professional identity Goal of a CV is to construct a scholarly identity CV reflects abilities as scholar: teacher, researcher, and publishing within the discipline May not need to include an objective on a CV If moving to another field, a stated objective may help stress new focus Follow the simple "C" rules: CVs are longer than resumes and more detailed, refrain from writing your life story Delete irrelevant or unprofessional information. Be Clear.Keep your CV well organized and logical. Be Concise. Include only relevant and necessary information. Be Complete. Do include ALL the relevantinformation. Be Consistent. Use the same styles and fonts throughout the CV. Be Current. Keep your CV up-to-date, once you have it written, adding new publications and awards as they occur. Content of CV There is no single correct format or style for writing a CV Generally, a good CV will include the following: Contact Information Full name Mailing Address: Permanent Obtain address that will not expire Phone number(s) Sections on the CV: list in reverse chronology Education Undergrad/Grad Professional Experience Research/ Clinical Projects: funded-unfunded Publications Always bold your name in authorship You may include submitted and/or pending publications but state Presentations Honors and Awards Volunteer/Service Experiences Content of CV Certifications and Licensure Professional Affiliations Alphabetical listing Include all dates of affiliation Note any positions Professional Activities Only those very specific to academic/research career Should be school or university sponsored committees Include offices held References (optional) 4
5 Important Stylistic Techniques Gapping Use of incomplete sentences in order to present your information as clearly and concisely as possibly Poor: I taught nursing for four years, during which time I planned classes and clinical experiences, and constructed exams. Stylistic Strategies Parallelism Very important to a strong CV Keep the structure of your phrases and/or sentences consistent throughout your document taught undergraduate research classes Enjoy working with students on individual basis Instructor for clinical oncology Dedicated mentor to NP students General Set-Up Features Font: Times New Roman White paper Font size: 12 point No underlining Single sided Margins: 1 all around Use bolding and CAPs for emphasis Number pages No graphics Same font throughout Full name on every page in header Resume Resume should be: Well organized, simple font, and easy to follow Create ongoing lists of your skills, experience, and accomplishments Order is the key including a summary, education, experience, credentials, and accomplishments Follow 12 Great Steps for a Great PNP Resume: steps-pnp-resume Online Resumes Advantages include the potential of increased exposure. Place emphasis on choosing keywords employers look for in resumes posted online Make a listing of keywords the first item in your online resume, following your contact information. Most online employment websites offer forms or software programs to aid you in developing an online resume. Network Contact individuals in sites you desire to work Ask colleagues, professors for names Use for introduction Use professional organization contacts (NAPNAP, State NP Chapters) Next steps Accurate self assessment Clear concept of desired practice Develop professional portfolio: CV, resume, cover letter, list of references Craft a query letter Determine if position exists Request an informational interview 6
7 Cover Letters Brief: no more than one page Engage reader in first 2 sentences-why you are interested in position and highlight specific strengths you bring to practice Highlight any qualifications that make you unique for this position State method of follow-up you will make Interview Preparation (Melnic) Learn all you can about the company or organization Be prepared to answer and ask questions. Prepare your clothes for your interview, making sure they are business-like, clean, pressed and conservative. Bring extra copies of your resume and a pad of paper and pen. During the Interview (Melnic) Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early. Treat all people you encounter with professionalism and kindness. You should maintain a professional image you are invited to. Don't chew gum. Turn off your cell phone. Do not interrupt. Be aware of your non-verbal behaviors During the Interview (Melnic) Be enthusiastic, confident and energetic, but not aggressive, pushy or egotistic. Do not make negative comments Listen carefully to each question. Give thoughtful, tothe-point and honest answers. Ask for clarification Don t talk too much. If you are asked what your salary requirements are, you can respond by giving them a range. When interviewer concludes the interview, offer a firm handshake and make eye contact. Make a follow-up plan. Sample Interview Questions (Melnic) What are your strengths and weaknesses? If you could have your choice of any job, what would it be and why? Why do you want to work in this unit/clinic/facility? What are your short and long-range goals? What does success mean to you? What motivates you? How do you interact with families and patients? Tell me about your greatest achievement and greatest disappointment. Vague Interview Questions (Melnic) Tell me about yourself. What weaknesses in your work habits do you think you need most to work on Why should I hire you? Why do you believe that you are the best candidate for this job? Why do you believe that you could handle this position? How soon would you be able to start this position if we offer it to you? 7
8 Behavioral Interview Questions Tell me about a time when you demonstrated a lack of judgment in the care you provided. Tell me about a time when you disagreed in the care that you were providing Tell me about a time when you experienced an ethical or cultural dilemma at work, what was your role in it and what would you have done differently. Tell me about a difficult encounter you had with a supervisor or manager and how you resolved it. Tell me about a time when you made a difference in someone's life.
