The Future of Online Education for Respiratory Therapy: Creating an Effective Learning Environment that Enhances, Intrigues, and Educates Respiratory Students Randy Case MA, RRT-NPS

No Conflict of Interest Statement I certify that I have NO affiliations with or involvement in any organization or entity with any financial interest (such as honoraria; educational grants; participation in speakers bureaus; membership, employment, consultancies, stock ownership, or other equity interest; and expert testimony or patent-licensing arrangements), or non-financial interest (such as personal or professional relationships, affiliations, knowledge or beliefs) in the subject matter or materials discussed in this presentation

Objectives To gain insight and awareness to advancements in online education for respiratory therapy educators and students. To determine the difficulties often associated with online education and discuss methods and actions to decrease and avoid these difficulties. To establish the importance of online education for respiratory care as we move into a new era of educational development and progression.

What is Distance Learning?

The History of Distance Education First attempts at distance education date back to 1728, when Caleb Phillips advertised training courses on a new method of Shorthand that would be mailed each week to students. The first actual distance education success came from Sir Isaac Pitman in the 1840 s in which he mailed weekly lessons to his students and they in-turn mailed back their work for critiques.

The History of Distance Education During the early 1900 s the idea of distance education expanded and soon after, several Universities incorporated this into their curriculum. Full text books where then mailed to individuals versus weekly lessons. Radio and Television broadcasts were implemented in the 1960 s distance education programs.

The History of Distance Education The beginning of the modern day distance education was classified as synchronous learning meaning students met at the same time from different locations. Synchronous learning technologies included WebConferencing, VideoConferencing, Educational Television, Internet Radio, Live Streaming, and Telephone.

The New Online Education Long gone are the days of distance education that required lag time delays in connections and video conference lectures on VHS

The New Online Education The widespread use of computers and the internet have made distance learning easier and faster. Today, Virtual University Campuses deliver full curriculum online. The capacity of the Internet to support voice, video, text and immersion teaching methods made earlier distinct forms of telephone, videoconferencing, radio, television and text based education somewhat redundant.

Plagiarism Detection Software How to Decrease Online Cheating Turnitin and Ithenticate are just a few of the many examples of software that scans vast amounts of web content to determine whether a student s work matches existing material. Most that are caught are not intentionally cheating. They don t understand how to correctly cite and utilize resources. In essence, it becomes a good learning opportunity for the student.

Biometric Technology & Software How to Decrease Online Cheating Proctortrack software uses facial recognition technology, biometrics and machine learning to generate scans of the student s face, knuckles and ID. Additionally, it continuously monitors the user s mouse, keyboard, monitor, browser, webcam and microphone to detect if someone else is taking the test in place of the student or if the student is using any unauthorized resources to cheat.

How to Decrease Online Cheating Keystroke Recognition Devices There are also Keystroke Recognition Devices where students are required to do typing exercises in which the computer measures the speed and rhythm of their typing. Officials can then monitor the typing in later assignments to see if the patterns match up. Common Sense Professors are great for simply recognizing authentic material. We watch for drastic changes in work and writing skills.
