Groenland, Co-Director, PhD Program About the PhD Program Time period The PhD study generally spans a period of three to five years. While a shorter period is unlikely, a longer period is possible, depending on the student s needs as well as the supervisor. PhD students must be registered by NRI before starting their PhD research. Full-time and Part-time PhD study There are two ways to conduct a PhD study at Nyenrode. Full-time PhD students are employed by Nyenrode Business Universiteit and work for one of the university s competence centers. Aside from working on their own research topic, these students are also involved in teaching and other research activities of the centers. Part-time PhD students are not employed by Nyenrode. They conduct their PhD research alongside their regular jobs and pay a yearly contribution to the university for supervision, guidance and support. Courses and seminars NRI strongly and actively supports students during their PhD research. Every year PhD students are offered several courses designed to support them in conducting their research professionally. Students benefit from a wide variety of research seminars given by senior researchers on various topics and from personal discussions about methodology with highly qualified professors. Facilities and assistance NRI provides assistance in publishing research findings (by means of NRI Working Papers and PhD dissertations) and information on external research funding possibilities. Furthermore, students receive access to the Nyenrode Library (which possesses a large collection of research software, databases and written documents), to the university s ICT services and to the online PhD community. Guidance of academic supervisors Each PhD student is coached and supervised by one or more Nyenrode professors, each possessing cutting edge expertise in the student s particular field of research. Professors from other academic institutions may also act as co-supervisors. The supervisor monitors the progress of the research and ensures that the student is mastering the required research skills. He/she also helps ensure that the student progresses towards successful completion of the program.
