Cognitive, physical, social, and affective domains explored and implications for curriculum design and learning environments are drawn. This course is three semester hour s credit. Student Learning Outcomes: 1. The student will be an active and engaged participant in discussions by analyzing, constructing/creating, and evaluating information presented within the textbook, external readings/resources, and online discussion. 2. The student will be able to identify developmental milestones and their implications during the early years. 3. The student will examine environmental factors which may affect the development and learning of the young child. 4. The student will apply developmental principles and theories. 5. The student will demonstrate knowledge of the developmental behavior of young children through observation and will record their findings.

2 COURSE REQUIREMENTS Instructional / Methods / Activities Assessments This course consists of a series of activities and assessments to assist you in achieving the outcomes/objectives for the course and instructional units. Each week you will work on various combinations of assignments, activities, discussions, readings, research, etc. Quizzes: points each Student Learning Outcomes: # 1-6 Assessment Method: Multiple Choice and Short Answer Closed book quizzes will cover the required textbook readings and the content of the class and online discussions. Quizzes will be completed online by accessing the ecollege quiz tool. The quizzes will be timed and grades will be made available to students following the submission of the exam. If you lose internet connectivity during the exam, log back in immediately and continue on with the exam. Save your answers often (every couple min.). If you experience any issues while taking the exam, you must contact the ecollege Helpdesk immediately, so that your issue is documented with the helpdesk ticket number. Considerations regarding the exam issues will be made by the instructor on an individual basis based on the documentation. Discussion Forums: 14@25 points each Student Learning Outcomes: #1-6 Assessment Method: The discussion forums are related to the chapter readings, external resources and activities. Upon completion of the assigned readings and activities, you are expected to participate in an ongoing discussion with your classmates in an online forum. Your contributions to the discussion forums will be graded for quality, timeliness of your contributions, and a detailed analysis of linking together theory (readings) to application (activities). You are required to post to the discussion topic(s)/case study(s) and to at least two of your classmates posts. Cartoon Reaction Paper: 60 points Student Learning Outcomes: #3-5 Assessment Method: Checklist Provided (Doc Shared in ecollege) The student will watch two hours of cartoon for kids (not PBS/Discovery Kids). Evaluate and summarize what you have viewed in a reaction paper. Include the implications for the developing child. The minimum length should be three double spaced typed pages. Use higher level thinking in your writing. Case Study: 70 points Learning Outcomes: #3-6 Assessment Method: Checklist Provided (Doc Shared in ecollege) The student will complete a case study of a child between the ages of three years of age through fourth grade. You are responsible for finding the child and completing this assignment. I cannot provide a child for you. You may observe your own child, family member, or friend s child, but be objective. Remember to use a fictitious name for privacy. Mini Research Paper: 70 points Learning Outcomes: #3,4,6 Assessment Method: Checklist Provided (Doc Shared in ecollege) Research an issue relating to Early Childhood and its implications for the classroom. Write a 3-5 page paper that shows adequate understanding of the topic. You must include a title page and a reference page in APA format. You will not be able to select a topic someone else has already selected. I am putting a list in the discussion board section for you to possibly select from. Please respond to the topic you would like to research by January 27th by. First come, first serve. Essay: How Child Affects a Teacher s Instruction: 50 points Learning Outcomes:#1,2,4 Standard 5 paragraph essay (Or detailed lesson plan for a given classroom description) APA format: Write a 2-3 page essay that gives at least 3 ways that understanding a child s development helps one become a more effective teacher. Be sure to include a title page. Final: from quizzes: 25 points

3 Grading The student s grade will be determined by points received on assignments, discussions, exams, and professionalism in this course. Grades can be viewed in ecollege, as assignments are completed and assessed. Total Points Possible for Semester = A B C D F TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENTS This course is fully online through ecollege. All students must have access to and adequately functioning computer equipment. To use the university s online resources, students need a computer and an Internet service provider (ISP). Students also need an Internet browser, an program, and a word processing program. A working familiarity with hardware and software is advantageous before entering the program. The following information has been provided to assist you in preparing to use technology successfully in this course. Internet access/connection-high speed recommended (not dial up) Word Processor (i.e. MS Word or Word Perfect) Hardware: Both Macintosh and Windows systems are acceptable. Students do not need to purchase a new system to begin online learning at the university. o Windows 98/NT/2000/ME/XP Pentium (2 GHz or greater) 128 megabytes (MB) random access memory (RAM) 2 GB or greater hard drive o Macintosh OS 9.1 to OS X; G3, G4, or higher 128 megabytes (MB) random access memory (RAM) 2 GB or greater hard drive Access to a reliable service through an established Internet service provider (ISP) is critical to the online learning experience. All communication from the instructor for this course will be through the students TAMU-C account. Web Browser: Internet Explorer (version 7.0 or greater) is required. These browsers are available for free in the download areas at Adobe Acrobat Reader: Available at this free program (Adobe Reader 8) allows you to view and print many forms and some full-text documents from online library databases. Adobe Flash Player 9.0Available at This allows you to view any content delivered in Flash. Video Players/Plugins: It is available for free download o QuickTime, o RealPlayer, available at and o Windows MediaPlayer 11.0, available at Java Applet: Since the online classroom is interactive and dynamic, it is important that students Internet browser be Java-enabled. The Java Virtual Machine can be downloaded for free at Virus Protection Viruses can be transmitted to computers as attachments. Once a virus is resident on a computer, it can hinder performance, crash the computer, or damage

4 files and hard drives permanently. To protect their systems, students should purchase up-to-date antivirus software from a local computer store and regularly check their computers for viruses. ACCESS AND NAVIGATION This course will be facilitated using ecollege, the Learning Management System used by Texas A&M University-Commerce. To get started with the course, go to: edu/login.aspx. The student will review the information and links shared above under Being a Successful Student 2. The students will need to access the Doc Share tab and review the syllabus and rubrics provided. 3. The students will complete an introductory response that can be found in week one. 4. The students will select a mini research topic by posting the topic and their name in the response area. I will update the list periodically as topics are selected. No duplication! You may select a topic not listed; post the topic you would like in response section for approval. How Should Students Proceed Each Week for Class Activities? 1. The student will access and follow all course instructions found in the weekly/unit content area of the ecollege course. The weekly content area of our course is found on the left navigation bar. 2. The student will view any video assignments/power Points that may be assigned for each week. 3. The student will complete the assigned online exams by accessing the exam tool in the ecollege course. Each week will have a quiz assigned based on readings and assignments. 4. The student will respond to posted online course discussion and case studies using the ecollege discussion tools. Students will need to check the assignment tab for each week, as some weeks have more than one discussion or may be in an assigned group discussion format. 5. The student will complete and submit assignments electronically using the ecollege dropbox tool. Help: Click on the 'Help' button on the toolbar for information regarding working with ecollege (i.e. How to submit to dropbox, How to post to discussions etc ) COURSE AND UNIVERSITY PROCEDURES/POLICIES Course Specific Procedures: Attendance Policy: ECE 313 is a 100% online course conducted through ecollege. You can locate ecollege through your myleo portal found at A username and password is required. In order to complete this course successfully, you must have a working computer and a minimum of three hours a week should be spent on readings, assignments, and activities. The course will be turned on the first day of class. Online activities will begin January 13, All assignments for the week must be completed by each Friday of the assigned week; the week will not be accessible to students after this time and will not be reopened. A zero will be placed for all assignments not completed by this time and will not be able to be completed. Weeks will open one week in advance allowing students to work ahead. If you miss three or more week s worth of assignments you may be asked to drop the course or be administratively withdrawn from the course for excessive absences. If you decide not to take the course, you are responsible for dropping the course. Failure to do so will result in an F in the course. Dropping a course online: If you are considering dropping an online course please your instructor stating that you desire to drop the course. The instructor will reply back to you via with an acceptance of your drop and forward your request to the Office of the Registrar. The Office of the Registrar will process the drop. You may check the status of your drop through MyLeo. Dropping a course may affect your financial aid ( and/or your scholarships ( ). Please check with them before proceeding, if necessary. **PLEASE NOTE** This procedure is for dropping an online course only. It does NOT apply to a withdrawal from the university. If you are dropping ALL of your courses, a withdrawal must be completed. Assignment Policy: All assignments are due on or before the date they are assigned. There is no late work accepted in this online course. You are a professional and must present yourself in a way to show responsibility. All assignments will be submitted through the dropbox in ecollege and must be in.doc or.docx format. DO NOT ME YOUR ASSIGNMENTS. They need to go through the upload process. Assignments are due even if you are sick. This is the great thing about an online course. If you are not prepared, you will not get your assignments done on time. Do not wait until the last minute to complete your assignments. Discussion boards will be due by Sunday of each week. If you miss a discussion board you will receive a zero for that day. (See discussion boards under requirements for additional information). Written Assignments: All written assignments are to be typed double-spaced in a legible 12 pt. font with 1 margins and are expected to exhibit professional quality. You should demonstrate mastery of organizing, structuring, and editing (for all aspects of mechanics) in your writing. Excessive grammar, spelling, and vocabulary errors will result in a reduction of your score at the instructor s discretion. College level writing and higher order thinking must be evident in all written assignments. If you are unsure of your writing abilities, please visit the

6 writing lab for help. Academic Honesty Policy: Texas A&M University-Commerce does not tolerate plagiarism and other forms of academic dishonesty. Conduct that violates generally accepted standards of academic honesty is defined as academic dishonesty. "Academic dishonesty" includes, but is not limited to, plagiarism (the appropriation or stealing of the ideas or words of another and passing them off as one's own), cheating on exams or other course assignments, collusion (the unauthorized collaboration with others in preparing course assignments), and abuse (destruction, defacing, or removal) of resource material.
