It reduced the maximum loan that can be taken out in proportion to the value of residential properties (loan-to-value or LTV ratio). In December 2011 the government of mainland China announced a pilot scheme allowing the Hong Kong subsidiaries of qualified fund managers and securities companies to invest renminbi (the Chinese currency) raised in Hong Kong in the mainland stock markets within a permitted quota. In October 2011 the mainland authorities also issued rules permitting renminbi that have accumulated in Hong Kong to be used for foreign direct investment on the mainland.
