Red Cup > The LA Startup list If you're working on your startup in Santa Monica or Los Angeles, or considering a move to the area to launch, the region has great resources to drawn upon. Here's a list of my favorite Santa Monica and LA co-working spaces, incubators, accelerators and education resources. Questions, comments or revisions? Contact media@redcupagency.com. Compiled by Lee Schneider, creative director of Red Cup Agency. Places and spaces The Los Angeles startup ecosystem is supported by a lively network of Meetups, coworking spaces, incubators, accelerators and educational resources. If you are new to the scene, a Meetup or coworking space is a great place to start by meeting people. Coloft 920 Santa Monica Blvd info@coloft.com coloft.com 1 of 7
Friendly and low-key, Coloft is a relaxed space for getting work done. Conference rooms large and small are available for meetings, Skype sessions and phone calls. Many startup events, Meetups and classes are held at Coloft. Rental plans include a 12-hour-per-month plan, a 24/7 plan and an after-hours plan. Meeting space by the hour for non-members. Some membership plans include conference room time. ROC Santa Monica 604 Arizona Ave info@realofficecenters.com realofficecenters.com ROC Santa Monica is part of the empire of Real Office Centers in Southern California. The space in Santa Monica is the former headquarters of Google and is huge: 44,260 square feet. Working spaces include a large open area with community tables, private offices, a roof deck and conference rooms. Hanging out on the roof deck for a client meeting is impressive. Working here, you certainly feel that you've arrived. Since it is big, there is a smaller sense of community than you'd find in other workspaces that are more intimate. People sometimes have loud phone conversations, and you'll love or hate the high-energy buzz. Conference rooms by the hour. Cross Campus 929 Colorado info@crosscamp.us crosscampus.us A hive of activity, Cross Campus is home to many startup events in the area. You'll feel right in the center of the action here. Rental plans range from pay as you go, night and weekend, a collaborative workspace to a dedicated workstation. Claims to have the 'highest concentration of techies' of all the workspaces. The space is known for signature events in the startup ecosystem, including startup competitions run by StartupNEXT. Cross Campus has a Pasadena location as well. 87 N. Raymond Avenue Pasadena, CA info@crosscamp.us 2 of 7
They call this 20,000 square foot campus their sequel to Santa Monica. It s in the Old Pasadena building, and there is a Lego reception desk in the lobby. Blankspaces nd Street bsm@blankspaces.com blankspaces.com Bright and airy space in the heart of Silicon Beach action, and close to the actual beach and Third Street Promenade outdoor mall. Open workspace, library-style desk space, and private offices. Mellow vibe makes it easy to get work done here. Monthly rentals and also meeting space by the hour. Blankspaces also has locations in Mid-Wilshire and Downtown LA. Blankspaces Mid-Wilshire 405 Wilshire Blvd Los Angeles, CA bla@blankspaces.com Blankspaces Downtown LA 529 S Broadway 4th Floor, Los Angeles, CA bdtla@blankspaces.com Be Great Labs 5900 Wilshire Blvd, 21st Floor Los Angeles, CA incubate@begreatpartners.com begreat.co/labs 3 of 7
With a slick, sophisticated presentation, and competitive pricing, Be Great Labs is sure to impress clients if you need to take meetings, and will work within your budget. Home to the Be Great Partners incubator. Membership plans range from a virtual office, to an open space workstation, to private offices. Conference rooms available by the hour. Not only do you get coffee, tea and WiFi, like the other workspaces, Be Great throws in snacks and a multi-media theater for presentations. Home to lots of startup events, and its Mid-Wilshire location makes it close to Silver Lake, Echo Park and other hipster zones. A more corporate feel than the other workspaces. Village Workspaces 212 Marine Street, Suite 100 Santa Monica, CA info@villageworkspaces.com villageworkspaces.com The low-key Main Street location of Village Workspaces is a fun place to work, and with lots of lunch places nearby, not to mention the Pacific Ocean, you'll have pleasant distractions, too, if you want them. The space serves not just techies, but writers, freelancers and micro-businesses. Meeting rooms, office suites, cube workspaces, and open workspace available. Kleverdog Coworking 418 Bamboo Lane, Suite A Los Angeles, CA kleverdogcoworking.com Kleverdog's Chinatown location is convenient to downtown loft neighborhoods. Many startup events, Meetups, and workshops are held here. Membership prices are lower than the Westside coworking spaces. Digging in - Incubators & Accelerators Here is a listing of the major incubators and accelerators in the Los Angeles ecosystem. MuckerLab is a privately-funded startup accelerator focused on Internet software, services and media ventures in the Los Angeles market. Enterprise and B2B startups typically are early-stage, while consumer product company candidates require more proof of product-market fit. The average portfolio company has raised from $250,000 to $500K before starting the program. The program runs from three to 12 months, depending on the needs and progress of the company. 4 of 7
On average, MuckerLab invests $21,000 in exchange for a 6-8% equity stake. Applications are accepted through AngelList. Science Inc. is a hybrid in the LA startup scene. Not an incubator, not an accelerator, but a combination of both. The group s portfolio includes FameBit, Playhaven, SpringRole, Medium, Urban Remedy, HelloSociety, Dollar Shave Club and DogVacay. You might not recognize all of those companies, but they all have something in common. They leverage multisided markets, with a user side that is often free, and a second side, for institutions and vendors, that costs. An example of a well-known multi-sided marketplace is Google, which is free for search, while marketers and advertisers pay for access to attention, search habits, and user data. StartupNEXT is a national program backed by Google for Entrepreneurs. The program is designed for startup teams having at least two co-founders that are in pre-seed stage, and have not achieved product/market fit. Tech companies work best in this program. A good source of guidance and mentoring. Launchpad LA was originally designed to be a mentorship program, but is pivoting into becoming a seed funding VC group. It was founded by Mark Suster (author of Both Sides of the Table), Adam Lilling and Joshua Roth, all of whom have founded multiple startups. Launchpad LA offers a $25K-$100K initial investment in your startup, free office space for four months, and a mentor network. In exchange for its investment in your company, Launchpad LA takes an equity stake in your startup. Check the site to see if they are currently accepting submissions. Amplify LA is a startup accelerator and entrepreneurial campus in Venice, California. The four-month program is committed to helping founders build their startups into strong, scalable, successful companies. Amplify LA backers include tech investors and players in media and entertainment. They provide from $50,000 to $200,000 in seed funding, free workspace on the Venice, CA, campus, and access to an investor network. Amplify LA takes an equity stake in exchange for their participation. Be Great Partners is a technology accelerator in Los Angeles with open enrollment. The program is eight weeks and provides $50,000 in seed funding for your startup. Experts work with you on product development, distribution/sales, operations/hiring, marketing and your deck. The accelerator program concludes with Demo Day, during which you'll pitch your startup to a group of VCs and angel investors. Its portfolio includes Change.org, Lettuce and SendHub. Techstars Disney Accelerator is a three-month immersive mentorship and investment program for technology-powered startups. The focus is on companies working in the consumer entertainment and media space. Companies selected to participate in Disney Accelerator will receive $20,000 in funding when accepted, with an option to access an additional $100,000 convertible debt note to develop their ideas. Participants will have access to mentors including top Disney 5 of 7
executives, as well as to stories, characters, technology and other resources from across The Walt Disney Company. It culminates with Investor Demo Day, where each company presents its team and product to entertainment leaders and investors. Application is annual. StartEngine Business Accelerator is an accelerator focused on helping Los Angeles-based technology startups build a solid foundation for success in 90 days. The range for seed capital is $20,000 to $100,000, and StartEngine takes from 4-10% equity. StartEngine was created by Howard Marks, co-founder of Activision, and Paul Kessler, a prolific LA investor. The accelerator is looking for early-stage companies in mobile, clean-tech, healthcare, SaaS and e-commerce, and accepts applications in four cycles each year. Each session ends with Demo Days, attended by angel investors, VCs and influencers. Since its beginning in 2012, StartEngine has invested $2.5 million in 34 companies. The Design Accelerator is an incubator aimed at helping design-driven startups grow. Associated with The Art Center College of Design in Pasadena and Caltech. Launches two times per year, in Summer and Fall. Viterbi Startup Garage is a 12-week technology accelerator program that includes $50K in funding, workspace, strategic and financial resources. There is mentor access, as well as legal, fundraising and marketing support. It is the brainchild of Ashish Soni, Founding Director of VSi2 and the Startup Garage. In exchange for investment, the program takes an equity stake in your startup. Startups are eligible as long as they have a co-founder who is a current USC Viterbi student or alum. If an alum, the co-founder must have graduated no earlier than Applications are annual, usually opening in May, with the program beginning in the summer. Idealab in Pasadena, CA, is the 'grand-daddy' of incubators, founded in 1996 by Bill Gross. Idealab has created and operated more than 125 companies with 40 IPOs and acquisitions. Original companies developed include CitySearch, etoys, and Overture Services, the first company to introduce the idea of paid search. Success stories include Tickets.com, Picasa and Cooking.com. Business plans considered by invitation only. Education & community General Assembly LA is a buzzing hub of educational activity for designers, coders, marketers, startups, and small business. Full-time classes include a web development immersive and UX design. Part-time courses include product management courses and digital marketing courses. Classes and workshops cover many aspects of digital marketing, startups, and crowdfunding. 6 of 7
Stubbs Alderton & Markiles, a law firm with offices in Sherman Oaks and Santa Monica, offers a fixed-fee startup package to simplify the formation of your startup. The group provides interim office space and also legal services focused on the needs of startups. Los Angeles Meetup has a Lean Startup Circle group with 3,000 members. Founder Panel is a popular Los Angeles area Meetup with more than 1,200 members. Want more? Check out my book about the LA startup scene. Preview on Amazon now. amzn.to/1j5kwks 7 of 7
