4 BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING Vanderbil is one of he pioneers in he naion in biomedical engineering and was one of he firs in he counry o esablish a biomedical engineering deparmen. We work very closely wih he Vanderbil School of Medicine, which is wihin a 25-yard walk from our building. We also work wih he Free-Elecron Laser, which is one of a handful of unable elecron lasers in he world. PROFILE: JONATHON WELLS (expecs o obain his Ph.D. in 2007) Research area: Biomedical opics. My research explois a novel mehod for nerve simulaion ha uses pulsed infrared laser ligh for conac-free, damage-free, arifac-free simulaion of discree populaions of neural fibers. By opimizing key laser parameers and unraveling underlying mechanisms of acion, a laser simulaor wih unmached precision may soon be a new clinical ool in medical procedures. I am working on injecable bone scaffolds for use in bone defecs such as fracures from rauma, surgery or/and oseoporosis. These scaffolds are biocompaible and biodegradable and conain various growh facors o promoe bone healing.
