4 Umeå Industrial Doctoral School Past Performance 2 groups of candidates, first group started 2008, second group started completed doctoral thesis 23 scientific papers in peer reviewed journals, out of which 14 are co-authored by company personnel 4 patent applications 4 innovations 9 technical solutions 2 software packages E.I.D.S. 7 Bangor University Knowledge Economy Skills Scholarships (KESS) PhD and Research Masters supported by the Welsh Government s ESF Convergence programme; Research projects undertaken collaboratively with businesses based in the Convergence Region; Integrated with research, innovation and business skills training leading to a Postgraduate Skills Development Award; Scholarship projects linked to the 4 Welsh priority R&D sectors; Part of a concerted effort to transform the economy of Wales through investing in Research, Innovation and Higher-level skills Students must be based in the Convergence Region on application.

8 Bangor University Knowledge Economy Skills Scholarships (KESS) 33/ 39 million total project costs; 220 PhDs / 200 Research Masters; 318 live scholarships (Jan 12); 9 University Partners across Wales; Micro Companies, SMEs, Large Companies and 3 rd and Public Sector Organisations are all eligible project partners; Low cost for participating companies: k / p.a. Students receive a Scholarship of 14k / 16.8k p.a. and a 5k / 6k travel, training and equipment budget; Projects approved through an institution-wide competition. IP retained by University but possible to license at additional cost

Mutual Collaboration for the Future Collaborative PhD research at Ghent University Baekeland initiative (IWT) First call in 2009 In close collaboration with Flemish company Company submits project, provides co-funding and dayto-day supervision Opportunity for young MaDegrees, and for more mature employees in company who want to do PhD research Researcher: student at university; works at university or company PhD degree awarded by university Challenging PhD project, to the benefit of the company and the PhD student Contract: content and division of work/time, IP,

18 E.I.D.S. Principles Science and Innovation Working collaboratively with businesses and other organizations to deliver the principles of the Industrial Doctoral School, E.I.D.S. Engage creative researchers so they combine excellent research with benefit for society Encourage research projects and doctoral candidates within a range of academic disciplines Promote projects with mutual benefit Competitiveness Assure that projects and doctoral candidates are selected through a competitive process

19 E.I.D.S. Principles Course package Provide a course package to develop generic competencies Support local teams of collaborating teachers to deliver the course package. All course packages should be delivered through an agreed common language Establish local communities of doctoral candidates to encourage networking and peer support Prepare doctoral candidates for collaboration between the university and an external partner Mobility Establish and promote doctoral candidate exchanges within E.I.D.S. Establish and promote a common approach to the delivery of training that is harmonized across the partners Coordinate work-shops for all doctoral candidates to communicate their projects and discuss research issues

20 E.I.D.S. Principles Contract Make sure that a contract is signed by all engaged partners before the start of the graduate studies. The contract should regulate duties, finances, responsibilities and IP rights of all parties Funding Further affirm EIDS value by requiring external partners to co-fund the research project. The aim is to reach 50 % in co-funding from external partners
