Where s my Data Centre? Greg Share Senior Cloud Architect Pete Hulme Technical Lead - NGDC
The ICT industry is going through the biggest transformation in decades... New users New devices Core enterprise applications New applications and workloads New locations Big data Next generation Automation & Process Management Operations Workloads Applications & Storage Virtualisation Converged infrastructure Cloud data centres Computing Storage Network Data centres Networks / Internet Cloud services Security
and leverages new virtualised components in every area Application virtualisation Storage virtualisation Compute virtualisation Network virtualisation The next-generation data centre is foundational to hosting and enabling the software-defined journey: software-defined data centre (SDDC) enterprise hybrid cloud big data, fast data etc.
Software-defined definitions SDN, SDDC, SDE and NGDC How do they relate? software-defined anything/everything (SDx): What all these software-defined concepts really boil down to is: virtualisation of the underlying component and accessibility through some documented API to provision, operate and manage the low-level component. Analysts are talking about Software-defined anything/everything (SDx) changing the enterprise workplace. -- Softwaredefined-enterprise.com Common SDx themes: Software-defined enterprise Software-defined data center Software-defined networking SDx is an important enabling approach to the next-generation data centre
The next-generation data centre is A transformational ICT approach that enables and securely delivers on-demand services to the business by leveraging virtualised resources and shared services that can be consumed flexibly as they are provided
Next-generation data centre details A unique approach to ICT balancing the network, cloud and data centre The next-generation data centre Extends beyond the traditional data centre to include the network and cloud in an optimised fashion Intentionally, proactively, and predictively puts together specific systems and services in context to achieve specific business outcomes, each of which can be unique to a given organisation Can span multiple locations and include endpoint devices, depending on context Relies on and integrates several enabling technologies, methodology and concepts, including SDx and IoE, as foundational principles Is business requirements and desired outcomes dynamically driving ICT strategy, use and consumption it s not just a wave of new technology and systems Is capable of using consumption based models (even intended to do so), although some organisations may choose not to use this capability Reduces cost in most cases, but cost is not the sole adoption driver business agility, control, and flexibility are equally important (often more important)
Data is the Centre of Everything! Data has to be available to Applications and Users wherever they are In the next-generation data centre Data moves between on premise, cloud, hosted and mobile devices based on business needs Traditional Backup, DR and HA models don t apply in these scenarios New technologies provide completely different ways of addressing business needs for data management New organisational models and operating processes provide new challenges and requirements Data growth continues unabated and needs to be factored into operating models and processes Data Protection and Lifecycle Management (DPLM) becomes business critical practice Reduce costs of data storage and management Reduce Risk (Security and Availability) to critical data Improve business effectiveness
DCDM 11 Domains of the NGDC Maturity Business Aligned Service-based Next generation desktop and enterprise mobility Applications and workloads Data centre Architecture Service Architecture Virtualisation Platform Automated Storage Platform Compute Platform Security Platform Network Platform Data Centre Interconnect Cloud Services Standardised Facilities Basic Security Architecture
How mature should I be? Maturity required is directly dependent on desired business outcomes Not everyone needs to achieve the highest level of maturity, but everyone needs to reach a level that can be justified as meeting specific business needs. Desired or required maturity in any particular area can be impacted by: Specific business goals and desired outcomes Organisational appetite for risk Available Technology Government and industry laws and regulations Just to name a few Industry the organisation is a part of or trying to enter Geographic Location Client Expectations
When technology and organisational maturity don t align When technology gets too far ahead: Infrastructure becomes chaotic and almost impossible to manage Lots of tools for individual point solutions with little to no strategic oversight No integration or coordination or management between systems Technology and infrastructure sprawl (including VMs) Overly complex systems and configurations Greatly increased operational risk Increased costs Like giving the keys to the McLaren MP4 to a teenager who just got his driver s license
When technology and organisational maturity don t align When processes and organisation get too far ahead: Bureaucracy reigns and becomes a wet blanket Processes become overbearing (process for the sake of process) Air of nothing gets done without someone else s approval Loss of agility process overrides capability Shadow IT becomes a common way of doing things Increased costs Like making an elite F1 race driver compete on the track with a Trabant
1 Understand business goals first Business and IT leadership must be strategically aligned Tools add many layers of abstraction DON T add layers in the organisation Abstraction in technology masks complexity whilst adding flexibility and agility Keep organisational maturity aligned and slightly ahead of technology maturity Higher maturity is not higher complexity Implement services management capability in IT operations Align services provided by NGDC to business goals Abstraction in organisations can lead to more bureaucracy while adding control and consistency Infrastructure architecture and organisational design alignment is key to reaping the full benefits Resist technology for technology s sake Resist process for process sake Understand the implications of the changes you make Maturing to NGDC achieving business goals
