This collection is realised in cooperation with artists who have illustrated some famous picture books for children. 3 WS-056 / Red Truck II / fiep westendorp ABOUT THE ARTIST The illustrations of Fiep Westendorp are known and loved by many generations and even after her death in 2004, her work is timeless and very much alive. Alongside the silhouettes of Jip and Janneke with the stories of Annie M.G. Schmidt she also drew the cats Pim and Pom from Mies Bouhuys and numerous illustrations for the poems of Han G. Hoekstra. She also made drawings for advertising campaigns, covers for todlers magazine BOBO and she gave Pluk van de Petteflet on his red tow truck his famous appearance. Fiep left the rights of her illustrations to the Fiep Westendorp Foundation. 13 WS-008 / Riding the Whale marije tolman ABOUT THE ARTIST Marije Tolman (Beuningen, 1976) studied graphic and typographic design at the Royal Academy in The Hague and Illustration & Design at Edinburgh College of Art in Scotland. Now she lives in The Hague with her husband and two children and she works in her studio in the old town. Photo: Ton Koene Her picture books are published in several countries. With her father, artist Ronald Tolman, she drew the picture book De Boomhut (2010). This picture book was received enthusiastically all over the world and was published in many countries. It has also been awarded many times, including Golden Paintbrush (NL), Silent Books List of Honour IBBY (Italy) and Bilderbuchpreis Bilderbuchmuseum Troisdorf (Germany). Marije Tolman s work has been exhibited in the Kunsthal, The Rijksmuseum, Gemeentemuseum The Hague, CODA Museum Apeldoorn, Bilderbuchmuseum Troisdorf and Museum Jorn Denmark. 18 ABOUT THE ARTIST noëlle smit Noëlle Smit (Alkmaar, 1972) grew up by the sea. She studied at the Graphic Lyceum in Amsterdam and found her way to the picture books at the School of the Arts in Utrecht. Meanwhile, she s a freelance illustrator for 10 years and her picture books are published by various publishers. In 2011, her book Fiet wil rennen which she made with Bibi Dumon Tak, became the Picture Book of the Year. Her books are translated into more than ten languages. I always ask myself: What is it I want to tell with this drawing, and how can I be as clear as possible? Every element in the drawing should be supporting the story. There is a story in a traditional portrait, a children s book illustration, as well as a cartoon character or a background design for an animation. 29 WS-011 / Vikings / coen hamelink ABOUT THE ARTIST coen hamelink Coen Hamelink works as an illustrator for various clients, including (international) publishing, animation studios and professional musicians. He also makes free work. Coen in his own words: I grew up with the sea and its ever-changing color palettes. The fresh breeze, the expansive space, running on the beach and making patterns in the sand. Everything was interesting. And it still is for me. The sea is always in motion and therefore always remains inspiring and new. She s timeless, unpredictable, accommodating and always present. Pure power and creativity.
