1 ADEA Leadership Institute Class of 2015 Profiles Gary Badger, D.D.S., M.S. Dr. Badger received his dental degree at Georgetown University School of Dentistry in Washington, D.C., in 1970 and his specialty training and M.S. degree in Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Missouri - Kansas City School of Dentistry in 1977 while serving in the U.S. Army. After completing his specialty education, he was assigned to Fort Knox, Kentucky, where he provided pediatric dental care for children of active duty service members. There, he also taught pediatric dentistry to general dentistry residents and children s dentistry to expanded duties dental assistants. After his overseas assignments, Dr. Badger returned to Walter Reed Army hospital where he was appointed Director of the Army s first pediatric dentistry program and consultant to the Army s surgeon general. Completing 23 years of active duty, he retired to College Station, TX, where he was employed for six years as the pediatric dentist for the local Scott & White medical clinic. When dentistry was discontinued in the Scott & White system, he began a private practice in the community and for 13 years provided care for community children. During his career, Dr. Badger has performed multiple outreach missions to indigent families, established school educational programs and traveled to Houston to teach part-time in The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston residency program for pediatric dentists. In 2012, he was appointed Program Director of the residency, and in November 2012, he was appointed the Chair of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Badger is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, former Chair of the Board, Former President of the College of Diplomates, Fellow of the American College of Dentists and International College of Dentists and a member of the American Dental Association. 2 Elizabeth Bilodeau, D.M.D., M.D., M.S.Ed. Dr. Bilodeau received her B.S., D.M.D., and M.S.Ed. degrees at the University of Pennsylvania. At the University of Pittsburgh she received her M.D. and subsequently completed graduate training in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine (Pitt SDM) in Dr. Bilodeau joined the faculty of Pitt SDM in 2011 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Diagnostic Sciences. She currently is the Course Director for the predoctoral Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology course and the dental hygiene General and Oral Pathology course, and co-directs the resident Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology course. She is Board Certified in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and participates in the faculty biopsy service. Recently appointed as the Vice Chair of Admissions, she is actively involved in first professional admissions. She also serves the school on the Academic Integrity Committee, the Faculty Advisory Committee, Strategic Planning and Budget Committee and University Senate Welfare and Benefits Committee. Her research interests include the clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical features of various odontogenic and salivary tumors. Dr. Bilodeau serves as a reviewer for several journals, including The Journal of Maxillofacial Surgery, Head and Neck Pathology and Oral Surgery Oral Medicine Oral Pathology Oral Radiology. She has been published in The American Journal of Surgical Pathology, Head and Neck, The Journal of the American Dental Association and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinics of North America, as well as other publications. Alexander Carroll, D.D.S., M.B.A., M.H.S.M., FICD Dr. Carroll is a graduate of University of Southern California School of Dentistry (D.D.S., 1981) and Arizona State University, W.P. Carey School of Business (M.B.A., 2010; M.H.S.M. [Master s in Health Sector Management], 2012). He is the Course Director for Practice Management for D3 and D4 students and the Director of Clinical Care Coordinators in the Dental Institute. Dr. Carroll maintained a private practice for 21 years with emphasis on prosthodontics, implantology and laser-assisted procedures. Dr. Carroll is the founder and two-term past President of the German Academy for Laser Dentistry. He served as Clinical Assistant Professor at the Ostrow School of Dentistry of the University of Southern California for two years before accepting his current position at Midwestern University College of Dental Medicine-Arizona. Dr. Carroll serves on the Editorial Board of The American Journal of Esthetic Dentistry. He was inducted as a fellow into the International College of Dentists in Dr. Carroll is a faculty member in Omega Kappa Upsilon.
3 Hubert Chan, D.D.S. Dr. Chan graduated from the University of Southern California with a B.S. in Exercise Science and was awarded his D.D.S. from the Ostrow School of Dentistry of the University of Southern California (OSD USC). He is currently the Senior Clinical Managing Partner at the Western University of Health Sciences College of Dental Medicine (WU CDM), where his primary leadership role is to oversee the effective operations of students, faculty and staff for all of the clinical group practices at the WU CDM. Prior to joining WU CDM in 2011, Dr. Chan served as a Group Practice Director and taught Restorative Dentistry at OSD USC, while also maintaining a private practice. Throughout his career, Dr. Chan has been awarded with multiple accolades for teaching excellence, and he is passionate about meeting the relevant learning needs of students by using the latest advances in evidence-based research and technologies. He has taught multiple pre-clinical and clinical restorative dentistry courses and currently develops curriculum on CAD/CAM restorative dentistry. Dr. Chan is a regular contributor to the Tech Trends Section in The Journal of the California Dental Association and serves on the Western Regional Examining Board Operative Committee. In addition to his professional life, Dr. Chan enjoys spending quality time with his wife Jean and two daughters, Megan and Emily. He also enjoys rock climbing, swimming, Disneyland, eating sushi, playing the guitar and volunteering at his church. Laurie Fleisher, D.M.D., C.A.G.S. Dr. Fleisher is a Clinical Assistant Professor in both the Department of Cariology and Comprehensive Care and the Department of Endodontics at New York University College of Dentistry (NYUCD). She currently is the Director of the Urgent Care Clinic at the college. Dr. Fleisher received both her D.M.D. and her Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Endodontics from Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Fleisher has presented regionally and nationally on endodontics, diagnosis of dental pain and the development of educational materials for the predoctoral student. She serves on the Editorial Board for The International Journal of Experimental Dental Science and is currently the President of the ADEA Section on Endodontics. Dr. Fleisher is a member of the ADA Advisory Team on Dental School Strategy and is the treasurer of the New York State Association of Endodontists.
4 She has been awarded the 2014 ADEA/American Association of Endodontists Foundation Scholar Award in the ADEA Leadership Institute. At NYUCD, Dr. Fleisher serves as a member of the faculty council leadership board, a student mentor, a peer assessment facilitator, a student club faculty advisor, an interviewer for the admissions committee and has founded the NYUCD Endodontic Study Club for predoctoral students. She has also chaired the Awards and Prizes Committee. Dr. Fleisher maintains a practice at the New York University Dental Faculty Practice where she specializes in endodontic therapy, endodontic retreatment, the diagnosis of complex dental pain and the treatment of dental traumatic injury. Cheryl Fryer, D.D.S., M.S., M.A. Dr. Fryer was born and raised in the Washington, D.C., area. After graduating from Howard University College of Dentistry (HU COD), she completed a General Practice Residency at the VA Medical Center in Washington, D.C. and an advanced dental education program in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. She holds a faculty position at HU COD in the department of Comprehensive Dentistry and is the Director of the Caries Risk Management Clinic. Prior to settling down at HU COD, she served the Army Dental Corps as a contract general dentist. Dr. Fryer has served in many capacities at HU COD, managing clinics/departments/ committees and teaching and learning activities for graduate and undergraduate didactic and laboratory courses. As the concept of teaching and learning methodologies became more intriguing, she completed a program in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at the University of Maryland, College Park. Her internship at the American Dental Education Association culminated in a project involving competencies for dental faculty and was completed through the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETLA) at Howard University, where she then served as a CETLA Fellow. Appointed by the dean of the College of Dentistry, she currently serves as Director of Faculty Development for Teaching and Learning and continues to work closely with CETLA in coordinating faculty development in this area. Dr. Fryer is certified in a number of teaching methods and is committed to continued growth in her skills and abilities in the dental education of future health care professionals. Through participation in the ADEA Leadership Institute, she hopes to expand her knowledge and understanding of what is needed in order to be a competent leader and administrator in dental education.
5 Peter Giannini, D.D.S., M.S. Dr. Giannini is an Associate Professor in the Oral Biology Department and Director of Clinical and Translational Research at University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry, where he also serves as Director of the Tobacco Cessation Clinic. Dr. Giannini earned his D.D.S. from the University of California, San Francisco, School of Dentistry and subsequently earned a certificate in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and a M.S. in Oral Biology from The Ohio State University College of Dentistry. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and an Academic Fellow of the American Academy of Oral Medicine. Dr. Giannini also serves as an Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology Consultant for the Veterans Affairs Lincoln Dental Clinic. His research interests include oral carcinogenesis, the oral manifestations of drug abuse and the management of oral mucosal disease. Steven Hackmyer, D.D.S. Dr. Hackmyer earned his dental degree from New York University College of Dentistry. He completed a residency in Pedodontics at Brookdale Hospital University Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. He is currently Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry and Community Oral Health at The University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Dentistry, and Chief of Pediatric Dentistry at LeBonheur Children s Hospital in Memphis, TN. Following a number of years in private practice, his first academic appointment was as an Assistant Professor in Residence and Clinical Sciences, as well as Course Director of the initial Predoctoral Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, School of Dental Medicine (UNLV SDM). While at UNLV SDM he was the Principal Investigator for a three-year $1.6 million Health Resources and Services Administration grant to fund a new pediatric dental residency program Dr. Hackmyer is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, Fellow of the American College of Dentists and Fellow of the International College of Dentists.
6 Rachel Henry, RDH, M.S. Prof. Henry is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Dental Hygiene at The Ohio State University College of Dentistry. She holds a B.S. in Dental Hygiene and a M.S. in Allied Medical Education from The Ohio State University. Prof. Henry is actively involved in the delivery of distance education to degree completion and graduate students. Her research focus is on social media and professionalism; she also conducts research on tooth whitening. She has authored many publications and is a reviewer for the Journal of Dental Education and the International Journal of Dental Hygiene. She is also featured as an Ask the Expert Panelist for Dimensions in Dental Hygiene. She presents nationally on social media, professionalism and ethics and generational differences in educational and workplace settings. Prof. Henry was the 2009 recipient of the American Dental Hygienists Association Future Leader Award and is a member of Sigma Phi Alpha, a national dental hygiene honorary society. She serves on the American Dental Hygienists Association s Council on Education and is the treasurer for the Ohio Dental Hygienists Association. Julie A. Holloway, D.D.S., M.S., FACP Dr. Holloway graduated cum laude from The Ohio State University College of Dentistry (OSU COD) in After graduation from dental school, she entered the Advanced Prosthodontics Education Program at OSU DOC and completed the three-year clinical program in She also received her M.S. degree and joined the faculty at her alma mater. Dr. Holloway served as faculty at OSU COD and directed the graduate residency program in advanced prosthodontics from , first as Associate Director then as Director, winning several teaching and research awards during her tenure. She was then recruited to direct the graduate residency program in advanced prosthodontics at The University of Iowa College of Dentistry & Dental Clinics (UI COD), where she now serves as the Department of Prosthodontics Departmental Executive Officer. She maintains an intramural practice at UI COD limited to prosthodontics, with emphasis on esthetic porcelain and implant restorations. Dr. Holloway s research focuses on materials sciences. She lectures nationally and internationally on porcelain strengthening mechanisms and the fatigue fracture mechanics of dental implant materials. She has authored and co-authored over 35 peer-reviewed articles as well as three book chapters. She was awarded the Academy of Osseointegration Best Oral
7 Research Presentation Award in She is a co-investigator on NIDCR grant R01DE entitled Ceramic Scaffolds with Engineered Chemistry and Topography, and was awarded the American College of Prosthodontists Clinician Researcher Award in Dr. Holloway is currently the President of the American Academy of Fixed Prosthodontics, Treasurer of the American College of Prosthodontics and Immediate Past President of the Carl O. Boucher Prosthodontic Conference. Sarandeep Huja, D.D.S., Ph.D., M.S. Dr. Huja is Professor and Division Chief of Orthodontics at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry. Dr. Huja received his initial dental and orthodontic training in Bombay, India. From , he was associated with three U.S. institutions, receiving his M.S. (1995) from Marquette University in Milwaukee, his Ph.D. (1999) and Orthodontic Certificate (1999) from Indiana University in Indianapolis, and his D.D.S. (2001) from University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry. From he worked as a faculty member, research director and program director in the Division of Orthodontics at The Ohio State University College of Dentistry. Dr. Huja is an Orthodontic consultant to the Commission on Dental Accreditation, serves on the Planning and Award Review Committee of the American Association of Orthodontists Foundation and is currently the President of the Craniofacial Biology Group of the AADR/IADR. He is also on the Editorial Review Board of The Angle Orthodontist, American Journal of Orthodontics, and Journal of Dental Biomechanics. Dr. Huja is a member of the Midwest component of the E.H. Angle Society and a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. He also maintains an intramural faculty practice. Dr. Huja has been primary investigator and co-investigator on grants from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, the National Institute on Aging, American Academy of Implant Dentistry, Delta Dental and the American Association of Orthodontists Foundation. His research seeks to understand bone remodeling, osteoclast biology and adaptation to physical forces. His clinical interests include skeletal anchorage, biomechanics of tooth movement and an interdisciplinary focus to treating patients with compromised malocclusions.
8 Stephanos Kyrkanides, D.D.S., Ph.D., M.S. Dr. Kyrkanides received his D.D.S. (1991) from the University of Athens Greece, and his Certificates in Orthodontics (1994) and Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (1995) from the Eastman Dental Center in Rochester, NY. He received his M.S. (1997) and Ph.D. (1999) from the University of Rochester, where he also completed post-doctoral studies in Molecular Medicine and Gene Therapy. He is Professor, Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Development, and Department Chair of Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry at Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine. As Associate Dean he has implemented new development programs, including workshops on R03 grantsmanship for young and junior investigators, translational research workshops for inventors and personalized development programs. Dr. Kyrkanides research interests focus primarily on temporomandibular joint disorders and craniofacial pain and development. Over the last five years, he has pursued original research, together with his collaborator Dr. Sabine M. Brouxhon, on squamous cell carcinoma and other types of epithelial cancers, inventing a new cancer therapy that has received a great deal of interest and attention from commercial firms, as well as venture capitalists and angel investors. Recently, Dr. Kyrkanides founded Natural Enamel, LLC, a startup biotech company that will commercialize his new technology of bioengineering enamel for use as restorative material by CAD/CAM technology. His current career goals are to provide leadership to academic units, advance his scientific research programs, accelerate the commercialization of his inventions, provide mentorship to faculty and students with particular emphasis on young faculty members and graduate students, and promote and facilitate institution-wide scholarly and research programs. Rajesh Lalla, D.D.S., Ph.D., CCRP Dr. Lalla is a tenured Associate Professor in the Section of Oral Medicine at the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine (UConn SDM). In addition to clinical and didactic teaching in Oral Medicine, Dr. Lalla has developed a new course on Evidence-Based Decision Making for dental students. He also leads a program in Evidence-Based Dentistry for faculty. Dr. Lalla is a Certified Clinical Research Professional (CCRP). His primary research interests relate to oral mucosal disease and oral toxicity secondary to cancer therapy. His research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), foundations, and industry, including an ongoing U01 NIH grant for a multicenter clinical study on oral complications secondary to radiation therapy for head and neck cancer. He has written 70 peer-reviewed articles or book
9 chapters, and has served as a reviewer for over 25 journals and on NIH grant review panels. Dr. Lalla s clinical interests include oral complications in oncology and other medically complex patients. At the institutional level, he serves as an IRB Chair at UConn Health Center (UCHC), member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the UCHC Clinical Research Center, Chair of the Dental Senate Research Council, member of the UConn SDM Strategic Planning Committee and Diplomate of the American Board of Oral Medicine. Dr. Lalla holds several leadership positions at the international level, including serving as Chair of the Mucositis Study Group of MASCC/ISOO, an international organization dedicated to supportive care for oncology patients. Dr. Lalla is also on the Board of Directors of MASCC, the Executive Committee of the Board, the Strategic Steering Committee, and serves as Chair of the Guidelines Committee. In 2012, he completed a certificate program in Executive Leadership for Health Professionals at Cornell University. Crystal McIntosh, D.D.S., M.S. Dr. McIntosh is an Assistant Professor at Howard University College of Dentistry (HU COD). She received her D.D.S. from HU COD and her M.S. in Periodontics from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry. After completing her M.S., Dr. McIntosh welcomed the opportunity to teach at her alma mater, HU COD. She additionally works in the Faculty Practice at HU COD, where she has the ability to provide standard of care treatment one patient at time. Dr. McIntosh has five published articles in peer-reviewed journals, and dedicates her time to volunteering on mission trips around the world, including to Jamaica, Haiti and Nigeria. Gregory Olson, D.D.S., M.S. Dr. Olson, born and raised in Canada, attended college in California and graduated with a B.S. in Business Administration from Pacific Union College. He then received his D.D.S. and specialty training in Pediatric Dentistry from Loma Linda University School of Dentistry (LLUSD). After several years of practicing pediatric dentistry on Whidbey Island in Washington State, he sold the practice and returned to LLUSD to study Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. While in Washington Dr. Olson was active in community leadership and organized dentistry. He was fortunate to be one of the original participants and educators in the University of Washington Access to Baby and Child Dentistry (ABCD) Program.
10 Currently Dr. Olson is a full-time faculty member at LLUSD, where he holds a dual appointment in the Orthodontic and Pediatric Dentistry Departments. He is actively involved in a course and curriculum development as well as clinic and classroom instruction. His interests include a wide range of topics including dental ethics, evidence-based practice and psychometrics. In addition to teaching and research, Dr. Olson serves on several committees and task force assignments for the school. Dr. Olson maintains a private practice both in Los Angeles and in the LLUSD Faculty Practice. He is a Diplomate and Fellow of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and serves as a board test writer, examiner and consultant. His professional memberships include the American Dental Association, American Association of Orthodontists, Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists, American Association of Pediatric Dentistry and American Dental Education Association. At the core of Dr. Olson s passion for education is discovering and implementing strategies to empower a student to become an effective leader and educator in his or her own community. Sundaralingam Prem Premaraj, B.D.S., Ph.D., M.S., FRCD (C) Dr. Premaraj is an Associate Professor and Director of the Advanced Specialty Education Program in Orthodontics at the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry (UNMC COD). Dr. Premaraj received his dental training from the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. He then completed his initial orthodontic training at the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine, University of Colombo, Sri Lanka. He subsequently received a Ph.D. in Oral Biology and Orthodontic Certificate from The Ohio State University College of Dentistry. Dr. Premaraj maintains an active research laboratory at UNMC COD; his research program seeks to understand the molecular signaling pathways associated with alveolar bone response to orthodontic loading. He is an ad hoc reviewer for Journal of Dental Research, Bone, American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, The Angle Orthodontist, The Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Journal and European Journal of Orthodontics. Dr. Premaraj is a Director of the IADR/AADR Craniofacial biology group, and has also served as President of the Nebraska Society of Orthodontists. He is a Diplomate of The American Board of Orthodontics and maintains intra-mural private practices in Lincoln and Omaha, NE.
11 Georgios Romanos, D.D.S., Ph.D. Dr. Romanos is Professor and Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs at the Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine and Professor for Oral Surgery and Implantology in Frankfurt, Germany. He is fully trained in periodontics, prosthodontics and oral surgery and is Board Certified in Oral Surgery and Implant Dentistry in Germany. He has a Certificate in Periodontology and a Certificate in A.E.G.D. from the University of Rochester. He is a Diplomate with the American Board of Periodontology and the International College of Oral Implantology. He has previously worked as a Professor of Implant Dentistry and Director of Laser Sciences at New York University College of Dentistry. He is a former Professor of Clinical Dentistry and Director of the Unit of Laser Dentistry at the University of Rochester. Dr. Romanos is a fellow of the Academy of Osseointegration, The International College of Dentists, The ICOI, The ITI Foundation, The American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery and The International Academy for Dental Facial Esthetics. He is Chair of the World Federation of Laser Dentistry (North American Division) and the AADR-Long Island Section. He is a member of the editorial boards of IJOMI, Clinical Implant Dentistry and Related Research, J Prosthodontics, Odontology, J Periodontology and others. He has authored more than 250 publications and three books on immediate loading and lasers, and has made over 500 presentations worldwide. Keerthana Satheesh, D.D.S., M.S. Dr. Satheesh is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Periodontics, University of Missouri - Kansas City School of Dentistry (UMKC SOD). She received her dental degree from Kuvempu University in India, and completed her certificate in Advanced Education in Periodontology and M.S. at the University of Minnesota. She obtained her D.D.S. from UMKC SOD. Dr. Satheesh teaches both didactic and clinical graduate and predoctoral courses in periodontology. She also mentors predoctoral and graduate students in research projects. Beginning June 1, 2014, she will be the Director of Graduate Periodontics at UMKC SOD. She is an active member of The American Dental Association, American Academy of Periodontology, The Kansas Dental Association and the American Dental Education Association. She is the President of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon-Rho chapter, and serves on several committees at UMKC SOD, including the faculty council, where she served as Vice-
12 Chair. Dr. Satheesh also maintains a part-time private practice limited to periodontics and implant dentistry. Her research interests include various aspects of clinical periodontics, implant dentistry and educational technology. She has received several teaching accolades, including the Distinguished Teacher awards, the Dr. David Moore Excellence in Teaching Award and the Elmer. F. Pierson Good Teaching Award. Becky Smith, D.D.S. Dr. Smith graduated from the University of Missouri - Kansas City School of Dentistry (UMKC SOD) in 1995 with a combined B.A./D.D.S. degree. She practiced general dentistry until August 2006 when she joined the full-time faculty at UMKC SOD. Dr. Smith currently serves as Associate Clinical Professor in the department of Restorative Clinical Sciences. Her teaching responsibilities include Clinical Dentistry, Evidence-Based Dentistry, Dentistry for the Special Patient and Extended Care Permit III. She is a graduate of the American Dental Education Association/AAL Institute for Teaching and Learning. In 2012, she was appointed Practice Coordinator, allowing her to mentor students with patients and progression in the clinic. She is the recipient of the Dr. Gary Newman Award for Faculty Leadership and repeat recipient of the Distinguished Teacher Award. Dr. Smith is an active member of the American Dental Association and serves as a site visitor for the Commission on Dental Accreditation. She has served in officer positions in the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) Section on Comprehensive Care and General Dentistry and the ADEA Section on Gerontology and Geriatrics Education. She is a manuscript peer reviewer for the Academy of General Dentistry. Dr. Smith s research interests include dental educational topics such as first-year expectations, night eating syndrome, student mentoring, collaborative care and loupes in preclinical labs. Recently, Dr. Smith has been involved with three grants addressing access to care issues.
13 Franklin Tay, B.D.Sc., Ph.D., FICD Dr. Tay received his B.D.Sc. with first-class honors from the University of Queensland School of Dentistry in Australia in 1981, his Ph.D. from the University of Hong Kong in 1997 and his endodontic residency at the Medical College of Georgia in He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics, and Professor and Chair in the Department of Endodontics at Georgia Regents University College of Dental Medicine. Dr. Tay is Fellow of the International College of Dentistry. He has been an Honorary Professor at the University of Hong Kong since 2007, a Visiting Professor at the Guanghua School of Stomatology at Sun Yat-sen University in China since 2009, Visiting Professor of the School of Stomatology at the Fourth Military Medical University in China since 2013, and a Visiting Professor at the School and Hospital of Stomatomogy at Wuhan University in China from 2013 to present. Dr. Tay serves as an Associate Editor for The Journal of Endodontics and Journal of Dentistry. His research interests include biomineralization of collagen scaffolds with apatite and/or silica, remineralization of resin-dentin bonds, antimicrobial sol-gel chemistry, mesoporous silica and endodontic materials. His research has been supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health, as well as industrial grants. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Dental Materials and has published more than 400 papers in peer-reviewed journals. Janice Townsend, D.D.S., M.S. Dr. Townsend is Associate Professor and Interim Chair of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the Louisiana State University Health New Orleans School of Dentistry (LSUSD). She is the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Louisiana Professor in Pediatric Dentistry, and is active in predoctoral and advanced didactic and clinical education. Dr. Townsend holds numerous accolades for teaching, is a member of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honor Society and was invited to be the Honorary Faculty Advisor to the Kell s Honor Society. She received her Board Certification from the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry (ABPD), and in 2009 was awarded the Art Nowak Award for the highest score on
14 the Board s clinical examination. She additionally serves on numerous committees at LSUSD, including the steering committee for the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges accreditation, and on the Children s Hospital of New Orleans Medical Executive Committee. On the national level, Dr. Townsend is an active member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, where she serves on the scientific program committee, the editorial board of the Academy s journal Pediatric Dentistry and chairs its annual poster competition. She has been an ABPD board examiner since 2010 and is currently serving on the organization s qualifying examination committee. In addition to her responsibilities as a faculty member and department chair, Dr. Townsend volunteers with and organizes dental outreach activities to strengthen the role of LSUSD in the community. She has helped organize the LSUSD Give Kids a Smile Day since 2008, including the highly successful 2013 event in partnership with the New Orleans Saints football team. Anne Williamson, D.D.S., M.S. Dr. Williamson received her D.D.S. from the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry and her M.S. in Oral Science and Specialty Certificate in Endodontics from the University of Iowa. Dr. Williamson joined the faculty at the The University of Iowa College of Dentistry & Dental Clinics in 2003, and has served the Director of Advanced Education in Endodontics since She is additionally involved in multiple research projects with her residents. Prior to her specialty training, Dr. Williamson was a private practicing general dentist in Nebraska for 13 years. Dr. Williamson was elected to the American Association of Endodontists (AAE) Foundation Board of Trustees in 2008 and has served as Secretary since From , she served as the Secretary, Chair-elect and Chair of the ADEA Section on Endodontics. She also served as Chair of the Educational Affairs Committee of the AAE from Dr. Williamson was the Edward M. Osetek Award winner for teaching excellence presented by the AAE in 2008, when she was also awarded the James H. McLeran Award for Faculty Excellence. She was a recent Educator Fellow of the AAE Foundation, and more recently chaired the Annual Session Planning Committee, a four-year appointment responsible for all aspects of the annual session. She is a member of the American Association of Endodontists, the International College of Dentists, the American Dental Association, Iowa Dental Association, University District Dental Association and the American Dental Education Association.
15 Roya Zandparsa, D.D.S., D.M.D., M.Sc. Dr. Zandparsa received a D.D.S. from Tehran University College of Dentistry and a D.M.D. from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. She received a M.Sc. in Biomaterials and Biomimetics from New York University s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and a Certificate in Prosthodontics from the New York University College of Dentistry (NYUCD). She completed a fellowship in Implant Dentistry at Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM), as well as several short-term courses including the ADEA Summer Program for Emerging Academic Leaders. Dr. Zandparsa taught at the Department of General Dentistry and Management Science at NYUCD and the Department of Restorative Dentistry and Biomaterials Science at HSDM. In addition to these responsibilities, Dr. Zandparsa is Faculty Advisor to American Association of Women Dentists, sits on the Dean s Advisory Committee on Continuing Education and is a member of the Strategic Planning Oversight Committee and Women in Dentistry Task Force at TUSDM. She has made large contributions to research in various areas, resulting in a number of published peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. Dr. Zandparsa lectures and presents both nationally and internationally, and additionally reviews manuscripts for The Journal of Prosthodontics and Journal of Oral Rehabilitation.
