3 The Bachelor of Arts in Accounting School of Business Vision The School of Business sees itself becoming globally recognized as the leading business school connecting the region to the world. Department of Accounting Mission The mission of the Department of Accounting is to provide world-class accounting education to serve the needs of the business community and the accounting profession. School of Business Mission The School of Business strives to create an environment that fosters the development of principled and innovative business leaders and entrepreneurs who can make a difference. Program History and Offerings In 1996, the accounting major was introduced. It became the Department of Accounting in The department currently offers majors and minors in accounting. Students choosing to major in accounting are required to complete 127 credit hours of course work, while students minoring in accounting are required to complete 15 credit hours. xaccounting

4 Overview Admission Students pursuing the Bachelor of Arts in accounting are expected to master basic knowledge and a general understanding of accounting principles covering financial, managerial, auditing and cost accounting. Emphasis is placed on the preparation and interpretation of financial statements and reports for internal and external decision makers. Ethical considerations, governance and transparency issues are covered throughout the course offerings. Admission into the accounting major is competitive. Students may declare a major in accounting during their third semester and upon successful completion of 27 credit hours, which should include the following three courses: ACCT 201, ECON 201 or ECON 202, and MACT 112. Declarations of intent to major in accounting are reviewed by the departments. Acceptances or rejections are then announced. Students who seek the Bachelor of Arts in accounting may not major or minor in business administration.

7 Where Can Accounting Take You? Accounting graduates have a strong understanding of accounting, financial and managerial concepts. Students are able to work within different professional capacities and choose from various career opportunities. Some of our graduates have gone on to find jobs at Grant Thornton, PricewaterhouseCoopers, BNP Paribas, Commercial International Bank, and Ernst & Young. Some have attained professional credentials as Certified Valuation Analysts (CVAs), Chartered Financial Analysts (CFAs) and Certified Public Accountants (CPAs), both locally and globally. Testimonials My decision to major in accounting was the best decision I made in my life. I am able to work in any field (sales, finance or accounting), and there are opportunities to work in banks, accounting offices and auditing firms. I will soon start working in Adidas as a junior accountant. Omnia El Husseini Hassan, 10 At the beginning of the academic year, I wasn t sure whether to major in accounting or finance. However, I found out that the accounting major includes finance courses as well, so it was a really good chance to learn about both fields. Now, as a fresh graduate who is working in Ernst & Young s assurance services department, I am able to implement and practice most of what I ve learned at the University including auditing and financial accounting concepts. I have also benefited from the tax and finance xminor background that I ve acquired from analyzing the companies I m auditing. At the end, I can say that pursuing a degree in accounting was definitely the best decision I've ever made. Omnia Radwan, 10

8 Students who have completed ACCT 201 (Financial Accounting) and ACCT 202 (Managerial Accounting), and who meet GPA requirements as determined by the department, will be permitted to declare accounting as a minor. Three electives are required, in addition to the two named required courses. Minor in Accounting The accounting minor is a great complement for economics majors, as it provides students with the skills to work within finance or accounting capacities, in addition to the economics component of their job. The accounting minor is also a strong asset for students majoring in engineering, as it is the backbone for the costing requirement of engineering projects.
