Review the rationale and motivation for the IOD Coder Development Program (CDP) Review the construct of the CDP Features/differentiators Criteria Expectations and requirements Scope & timeline Discuss the benefits of partnering with Career Step! 3

The HIM industry is facing a significant coding shortage ICD-10 stands to compound this shortage significantly As a provider of coding services, IOD needs to be able to support its client base in this time of need and beyond! Many individuals have taken certain first-steps towards establishing a coding career, but have reached an impasse The IOD Coder Development Program, through the use of technology, industry-leading thought leadership, and coding expertise, addresses all of these issues omain=hhnmag 4

Three Phases - Participants who successfully meet phase thresholds will advance to the next phase. Phase 1 Foundational Learning Review Phase 2 Critical Thinking Phase3 Productivity Improvement Program participants that successfully complete Phases 1-3 listed above will be eligible for consideration for a full time coding position at IOD 11

2015 represents a very unique challenge for the HIM industry CDP grads will be graduating into an ICD-9 based environment, albeit a short-lived one IOD will train grads in ICD-10 in advance of the implementation date, currently projected to be October 1 st,

Phase 1 is 3 weeks in duration Phase 1 requires a full-time commitment on the part of the trainee. Training is delivered through the IOD Learning Institute, supplemented by postassessment webinars Trainees are provided with an ICD-9-CM Manual to complete assignments Trainees must complete all assignments by their due dates Trainees must achieve an average score of 85% over 17 assessments in order to advance to Phase 2 13

Phase 2 is 6 weeks in duration Phase 2 requires a full-time commitment on the part of the trainee. Phase 2 contemplates an average of 40 hours of training each week Training is primarily delivered through the IOD Gym, supplemented by daily webinars Hours can be flexed within reason, but may not exceed 40 hours over the course of the week Trainees are provided with a workstation and monitors, but must make arrangements for suitable (high-speed) internet connectivity in advance of Phase 2 Trainees must complete all assignments by their due dates Trainees must meet performance thresholds during Phase 2, more on these later 15

Phase II is primarily powered by the IOD Gym You will be working through actual inpatient records (lessons), with the benefit of immediate feedback upon lesson completion Group level lesson results are aggregated and discussed during daily webinars Ongoing communication is enabled through OneIOD, allowing us to share in each other s learning 16

Phase 3 is 4 weeks in duration Phase 3 requires a full-time commitment on the part of the trainee. Phase 3 contemplates an average of 40 hours of training each week Training is primarily delivered through the IOD Gym, supplemented by weekly webinars Hours can be flexed within reason, but may not exceed 40 hours over the course of the week Trainees must complete all assignments by their due dates Trainees must meet performance thresholds during Phase III, more on these later 19

Phase 3is a lot like Phase 2, but the primary focus is now efficiency. Now that you have proven you can make the right decisions, we will help you make those same decisions faster Group level lesson results are aggregated and discussed during webinars Ongoing communication is enabled through OneIOD, allowing us to share in each other s learning 20

Thresholds allow us to assess performance objectively Thresholds prepare coders for the real world of coding, where accuracy and productivity are of primary concern PHASE 1 PHASE 2 PHASE 3 POST CDP WINDOW Assessment Avg >= % DRG 90.00% DRG 90.00% DRG If it is determined that it is mathematically impossible for a trainee to meet the next threshold, they will be dismissed from the program at that point in time 22

Upon completion of Phase 3, it is our goal to place graduates into remote coding positions at suitable sites, with the benefit of: FOCUSED PRE-BILL REVIEW WITH GRADUATED QA REDUCTION MENTORSHIP FROM EXPERIENCE QA PERSONNEL REALISTIC PRODUCTIVITY EXPECTATIONS ONGOING COMMUNICATION IN THE CDP GRAD FORUM WEEKLY EDUCATION 23

Trainees are compensated at a rate of 10.00/hour during all phases of the CDP CDP graduates will be compensated at a rate of 15.00/hour upon being placed in a billable position CDP trainees will be benefit-eligible once placed in a billable position CDP graduates who choose not to accept an offered coding position upon graduation are required to repay IOD for all training-related costs (15K) CDP graduates who accept a position upon graduation, but abandon that position before completing 18 months of coding services, are required to repay IOD for all training-related costs (15K) 25

IOD will use a combination of various candidate attributes to help us identify the members of the next CDP group: Credentialed vs. non-credentialed HIM-related experience Matriculation/enrollment in a coding program Recommendation from a coding program facilitator Performance on a basic coding assessment Performance on a job competency assessment (SHL) Performance in a short phone interview 27

Better input yields better output Maintain momentum coming out of your program You lay the foundation, we build the roof Employment opportunity with a forward-thinking, carefullyexpanding coding service provider

Other questions submitted were related to the effect of the CDP on the trainees current work status? Is it possible to work a part time job and also complete the program? Can I keep my job during the first phase by using vacation and personal time? We cannot dictate what trainees do outside of the program. While holding down another PT job is a possibility, this scenario is unlikely to lead to CDP success 30

Q: How many Career Step coding students do you accept into the training program at one time and how often do you offer the program? A: The CDP will be offered every other month. We project that we will accept 10 students into each program. These numbers stand to change as they have some dependency on ICD-10 implementation or delay Q: What is the likelihood of employment with IOD after completion of the program? Do you always have positions to fill? A: We budget 10 positions every other month based on placement projections, we are comfortable with that number/interval based on existing business and our sales funnel. Likelihood of employment is high for that reason. Q: Do I need to be certified to participate in the CDP program? A: Nope, but you do need to be a graduate of CareerStep (or similar CAHIM accredited coding program) to be considered. 31

Q: At any time during this program are we able to exceed the required amount of work hours on our own time for additional practice or information review? A: Yes, you are allowed to study or train beyond the 40 hours in Phases II and II. However, you will not be compensated for time exceeding the hours associated with those phases Q: How does compensation occur? A: A payroll schedule will be provided to you as part of your new hire paperwork. Compensation occurs on a bi-weekly basis. Q: Can we ask questions during the webinars? A: You can absolutely ask questions during the webinars. Trainees will have to raise their hands in order to ask a question during the webinar. This will be covered as part of webinar training 32

Q: I am currently an IOD employee, what effect will participation in the CDP have on my existing benefits? A: There are a number of independent variables involved. You will need to contact an HR representative to discuss your particular situation Q: I am not an IOD employee, will I be benefit eligible during the CDP? A: You will not be eligible for benefits during the CDP. If hired upon completion of the CDP, you will be eligible for the same benefits as other IOD coding personnel providing that eligibility criteria are met Q: If hired after the program, will I have access to the same benefits of IOD coders? Will I have the opportunity to participate in a 401K A: Yes, you will have access to the same benefits as other IOD employees, including eligibility to participate in a 401k 33

Q: Does ICD-9-CM have to be completed to participate in the IOD program A: Nope, we realize that a lot of folks have been trained up in ICD-10, and for good reason. ICD-9 and ICD-10 have similar underpinnings, especially on the DX side Q: When will the IOD CDP be converted to ICD-10? A: Depends on the implementation date, certainly no sooner than the May program. Possibly later if there is another delay! 34

What books should I buy? What about a workstation? There is no need to purchase any books. All class materials will be provided for you, namely: You will be issued a workstation (PC) and 2 monitors. Equipment and training materials will need to be returned to the IOD in the event that you do not complete the CDP. 35

What can I do from now until February 2 nd to prepare for the coding assessment? In some ways coding is part art and part science. The science is grounded in the proper application of coding guidelines. The most recent/comprehensive set of coding guidelines are the ICD-9-CM Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting: Effective October 1, These will be sent out as a follow-up to this webinar. The art of coding helps to fill in the grey areas, and comes with time. 36

Technical requirements are best understood using the overall program construct as a backdrop Workstation: Supplied by trainee (one monitor is sufficient, wireless OK) Internet capabilities: Arranged/supplied by trainee (suitable connection speed required) Workstation: Supplied by IOD (1 desktop, 2 monitors), must be hard-wired Internet capabilities: Arranged/supplied by trainee. Must be high speed (25Mb/S DL, 10 Mb/S UL) Workstation: Supplied by IOD (1 desktop, 2 monitors), must be hard-wired Internet capabilities: Arranged/supplied by trainee.
