2 About This Project The data in this story and the accompanying table and chart are excerpted from or based on the publication "Salaries and Wages Paid Professional and Support Personnel in Public Schools, ," an annual study conducted by Educational Research Service, an Alexandria, Va.-based nonprofit organization that conducts research on K-12 education. This is the third year that Education Week and ERS have worked as partners to publish findings from the annual salary report. The research service was founded in 1973 by seven national school management associations: the American Association of School Administrators, the American Association of School Personnel Administrators, the Association of School Business Officials International, the Council of Chief State School Officers, the National Association of Secondary School Principals, and the National School Public Relations Association. ERS uses a sample of school systems from across the nation, divided into four groups by size of enrollment. This year's survey provides data from the school year, collected in the fall of 2005 from 622 public school systems. Districts with fewer than 300 students were not surveyed. The data were statistically weighted by district enrollment group and state in order to generate nationally representative estimates of salaries for all public school districts enrolling 300 or more students. Additional information about ERS and its reports can be found online at: Average Salaries, $116,244 Assistant superintendents 99,771 84,515 High school assistant principals Subject-area supervisors 70,983 69,462 Librarians Counselors School nurses 52,505 51,862 46,953 39, ,000 40,000 60,000 80, , ,000 Annual salaries SOURCE: Educational Research Service, Salaries and Wages Paid Professional and Support Personnel in Public Schools Mean salaries by student enrollment ( ) 9 continued Mean salaries by community type ( ) 10 2,500-9, ,499 Large urban Medium urban Suburban Small town Rural Mixed types $133, , ,569 $103,388 82,127 87,333 $172, , ,913 $149, , ,839 $148, , ,333 $108,137 90,258 87,515 $91,618 86,457 $123, ,173 98,284 87,498 88,849 63,594 79,086 75,396 78,279 74,276 69,977 68,622 74,054 62,189 69,799 55,428 57,651 59,323 56,550 99,386 99,429 76, ,272 96,037 80,473 75,977 66,985 94,339 92,978 69,208 92,991 88,366 80,076 76,969 66, ,348 96,933 76,192 94,412 84,250 81,067 78,271 76,402 74,600 75,908 53,121 69,585 60,351 63,905 61,098 60,970 54,239 65,322 61,769 46,986 50,931 61,540 54,653 77,694 86,745 64,757 76,114 71,952 69,171 68,301 54,993 edweek.org 82,868 87,237 95,575 67,897 72,095 77,549 51,061 56,885 57,102 42,649 57,574 35,452 36,998 29,099 27,676 18,648 72,884 74,130 77,533 59,688 63,580 64,776 44,842 49,169 50,064 37,578 50,872 31,824 33,747 24,238 23,269 16,071 83,930 89,673 96,288 66,846 71,077 73,507 48,640 52,812 52,451 41,819 56,669 37,552 37,288 27,379 29,156 20,592 82,243 88, ,101 68,145 72,853 75,975 49,782 55,507 58,170 44,886 56,334 35,451 37,303 29,529 27,003 19,721 92,420 98, ,429 72,849 79,415 84,282 54,678 60,711 64,416 48,109 63,731 38,780 38,533 29,780 30,301 21,317 73,887 75,606 81,879 61,971 65,713 67,145 45,810 50,186 49,683 38,367 52,212 31,536 34,214 25,393 23,438 15,392 68,582 68,984 71,679 54,854 54,030 64,689 42,533 48,118 46,573 33,128 45,253 30,587 31,556 21,729 21,794 15,683 75,132 77,814 87,894 61,250 64,596 71,096 46,780 52,702 53,611 38,723 51,933 32,803 35,493 28,090 26,193 18,935 For more detailed information from the ERS report on salaries and wages, go to This online resource features a map showing the salaries of educational personnel by region; charts comparing salaries by districts per-pupil expenditure, enrollment, and community type; and charts showing superintendents salaries by their race, gender, and years of experience /hr /hr /hr /hr /hr /hr /hr /hr Participants were asked to report the number of days on duty per year, excluding holidays and vacation leave. 8 Data from were adjusted for inflation by the EPE Research Center using the Consumer Price Index in order to calculate percentage change. 9 Enrollment is defined as all pupils in grades K-12.
