APPROVAL OF AGENDA Additional agenda items were added under New Business: Mary Grimes School of Nursing Reunion April 16, Palm Pilots, and Licensure Examination Information by Nursing Programs. Joan LaRue moved that the agenda be approved as amended. Sandy Froemming seconded the motion. Motion passed. APPROVAL OF MINUTES October 18, 2004 Jennifer Jackman moved that the minutes be approved as presented. Jennifer Newton seconded the motion. Motion passed. SCHOOL REPORTS Chanute: Nursing II - 45; Nursing VII - 43 Ottawa: Nursing I - 45; Nursing V - 42 NCCC Updates: New Faculty - introduced earlier Brenda Schoenecker, Kathy Danner and Mary Lisa Joslyn are new nursing faculty Admission Procedure numbers - Reviewed the application deadlines - Chanute March 15, Ottawa April 30, and the numbers in the nursing classes as set out above Testing Policy - No longer mastery testing. Pathophysiology On-Line/Pharmacology/IV Therapy Certification - Implemented these three new courses this past year and they are doing well NEW BUSINESS Student Ages/Hometowns/Counties of Residence A handout was distributed showing the average age, hometowns and counties of residence of nursing students for spring The average age for the student nurse on both campuses for spring of is 30.44, compared to for fall of

2 On the Chanute campus students come from 40 different cities and 16 different counties. The towns with the largest student numbers are Chanute with 12, followed by Iola with 11 and Fredonia with 10. The counties with the largest student numbers are Allen with 17, Neosho and Wilson each with 14, and Montgomery and with 13.

3 Health Care Advisory Committee Meeting February 28, 2005 Page 2 On the Ottawa campus students come from 33 different cities and 14 different counties. The towns with the largest student numbers are Lawrence with 18 and Ottawa with 14. The counties with the largest student numbers are Douglas with 25 and Franklin with 24. Updated Admissions, Retention, Graduates, and State Board Passage Rates Updated lists were presented. Chanute s state board passage rate for the school year for LPNs was 100%, and RNs 88%. Ottawa s state board passage rate for the 03 school year for LPNs was 100% (have not received results of the 04 testers), and RNs 85% (five failed) (have not received results of the 04 testers). Clinical Facilities List An updated clinical facilities list was distributed for review. No modifications were made. NCLEX-RN Summary Profiles for Chanute (May 2004 Graduates) No report available. Graduates Follow-Up Questionnaires/Employer Surveys/Patterns of Employment A handout was distributed showing summaries of the Chanute Graduate Follow-Up Information, Vocational Follow-Up Information, and Employer Follow-Up Information. Five responses were received to the Graduate Follow-Up Information. Two students stated they felt they were adequately prepared for their nursing roles, one said yes and no, one said not cardiac, and one had no response. Seven responses were received to the Vocational Follow-Up Information. Six stated they were working full-time in their field of vocational training, one was not. Four were Very Satisfied with their job and three Satisfied. Three stated their vocational training was Very Good in helping them with their current position, four Good." Three stated they were Very Satisfied with their vocational training, four were Satisfied. Four responses were received to the Employer Follow-Up Information. Three felt that the vocational training his/her employee received was Very Good and one Good. All four responded that the graduates foster high standards of nursing care. Seven responses were received from the 1, 2 and 5-year Graduate Follow-Up Information from the Ottawa campus (see handout). Chanute Campus Graduate Recruitment/Open House March 9 Karen announced that we would be having our annual graduate recruitment/open house on the Chanute campus Wednesday, March 9. Mary Grimes School of Nursing Reunion April 16 The nursing department will be hosting a nursing reunion on April 16 at the Chanute Country Club. If anyone knows of a graduate that did not receive an invitation, please have them contact us. Many letters have been returned due to change of address, name, etc. 120 Day Graduate Nurse Practice Issue The State Board of Nursing is looking at changing the time that a graduate nurse may practice until they pass their boards to 60 days or remove practice time as GN all together.

5 Health Care Advisory Committee Meeting February 28, 2005 Page 3 Nursing Faculty Salaries and College Budget The college appreciates the help from our clinical facilities with paying instructor salaries. With budgets getting tighter we may have to do more and more of this. Updates: On-line Nursing Have to have clinical KSBN decided on-line nursing courses cannot get a license in Kansas without clinical experience. Health Insurance No facility in Southeast Kansas is requirement nursing students to have health insurance, however, several facilities in Northeast Kansas are. We currently are requiring all students to have coverage. Drug Testing Allen County Hospital stated they will be implementing drug testing on student nurses. Jennifer will get more information on this to us. Background Checks Miami County Medical Center and Allen County Hospital are now requiring that background checks be done on student nurses. Jennifer will get us more information on this as well. Palm Pilots The nursing department is purchasing palm pilots for all nursing faculty. They will be equipped with medication software for use at the clinical sites. Licensure Examination Information by Nursing Programs Karen reviewed a list of all nursing programs in Kansas and their RN pass rates for the past five years. PN NCCC tied with five other programs out of 19 with a pass rate of 100% for The Kansas average pass rate for 2004 was 92.80%, and the national average was 89.36%. ADN and BSN NCCC ranked 7 th out of 29 programs with a pass rate of 86.67% for The Kansas average pass rate for 2004 was 81.81%. The national average pass rate for 2004 was 85.26%. Facilities Concerns Allen County Hospital - Very happy with clinical instructors and students. - Going with computerized charting probably next year.
