I currently use primary storage that can do deduplication. a) Despite what hardware vendors publish, the purpose of primary storage and backup are significantly different. b) A common misconception is when backing up deduplicated primary storage it will be deduplicated at the backup - this is not the case. c) Even if you deduplicate at primary, you still need to deduplicate your backup data for true cost savings. 4. I currently use NetApp/EMC/HDS etc. which looks after my backups. a) Any of these hardware vendors have an agenda to sell more hardware. Backing up data using their methodologies is very expensive because it relies on you buying more expensive storage. b) Most of these vendors offer backup via snapshots snapshots are not backups until you have moved them to a another physical location. c) With this method of backup, none of the vendors have a central catalogue, so they are unable to instantly find any individual file for recovery regardless of when and where it was backed up. No requirement for an archiving product as I have a backup system. a) A common misconception is that a backup product is an archiving solution. This is not the case as archiving is for discovery and backup is for recovery. b) Enterprise Vault dramatically speeds up the time to search for all document types, therefore saving the company time and money. 2. Not a priority. Budget is tight. a) Using Enterprise Vault can reduce your overall primary storage footprint and costs by 60% and will also reduce the amount of data needing to be backed up, therefore significantly reducing your backup and restore windows. We are using Exchange 2013 Native Archiving. a) Exchange 2013 does not support the following: Deduping compressed or archived data. Archiving to any WORM (write once read many) tape device. Archiving from Domino, File Systems, SharePoint and Instant Messaging. Single instancing of data storage, this will increase the overall messaging storage requirements. b) Enterprise Vault will allow users to seamlessly access their archived information whether they are using existing tools such as Outlook or Mobile Handheld Devices.
