Director of Nursing Ann McCalister, R.N., Instructor of Nursing; Deborah Chaney, Administrative Assistant Job Description: The vocational nurse practices under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and/or licensed physician and performs treatments and procedures to meet client needs. The vocational nurse uses the nursing process when providing care to individuals with common health problems. Employment opportunities are available in many different health care settings. Salary: The beginning annual salary range for a vocational nurse in the Permian Basin is $18,000- $25,000. These figures do not include shift differential, weekend differential, or critical care pay. 2 Program Length: The program is 1 calendar year of 12 months. Classes begin and end in August each year. Certification and Licensure: Graduates who successfully complete the program are eligible to receive a Certificate of Completion for Odessa College and take the NCLEX- PN (Licensure Examination) endorsed by the Board of Vocational Nurse Examiners of the State of Texas. Educational Options: Student completing the program and passing the NCLEX- PN Examination may go on to earn an Associate Degree in nursing. See the Odessa College Student Handbook for details. Financial Aid: Financial Aid and scholarship assistance is available to the vocational nursing student on a first- come, first- served basic. The prospective student is advised to contact the Financial Aid Office at Odessa College as quickly as possible after acceptance so that financial aid will be available. This should occur prior to March 1 st of the year of anticipated attendance. We still will continue to take applications until class is full. Prerequisites for Admission: In order to be considered for admission into the Nursing Program, an applicant must meet the following criteria: A new class is admitted each fall semester, with classes beginning in August. Applications should be submitted no later than May. Obtain the application packet from the Monahans Extension for assistance.

3 Submit the official high school transcript or GED certificate with the completed application. A satisfactory score on the TEAS teat must be achieved. The student who is selected for the program will be required to meet the following criteria: Purchase uniforms, supplies, and textbooks as required by the program. Authorize the nursing program to conduct a criminal background check. This procedure is required for students to go to the various hospitals and agencies for clinical education. If the background check is positive for certain offenses, the student may not be able to do clinical education and therefore will not be able to complete the requirements for the nursing program and will be dismissed form the program. Liability insurance is required and is part of the college fee schedule. Submit proof of health and accident insurance, which is a requirement of the clinical agencies. Obtain a physical examination with drug screen. Submit an immunization record and obtain any needed immunizations. Participate in CPR training, which is arranged by the Extension. Admission Test Required: The TEAS test is required for consideration for admission to the program. Reservations to take the test may be made by contacting the Testing Center at (432) A money order for $40.00 and picture identification are needed. Please contact the Extension after the results are received. There is a review book available in the Book Store at OC to accompany the TEAS test. It can be purchased for about $ Other resources that might be used to study for this entrance test could be the SAT or

4 ACT study guides available at most bookstores. Program Cost: The estimated cost to the program is $6, to $10, Ability to Work during the Program: It is very difficult for students to maintain good academic standing while working and attending school. Official Transcripts of any college work should also be submitted. A second copy of these documents will need to be submitted at the Admissions office at the time of actual admission to Odessa College. Instructor of Monahans Vocational School of Nursing Mandatory Orientation: Any student accepted into the nursing program will be expected to attend a mandatory orientation at the school in order to receive Student Handbooks, sign required paperwork, and obtain general information. Each student who is accepted into the program will be notified of the orientation date. Board of Nurse Examiners Information: The Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas (BNE) approves all candidates for licensure. Good professional character must be present. The BNE may do a FBI check using fingerprint identification for all candidates for licensure. Some events, such as having a felony or misdemeanor conviction, having action taken against your health care provider license, having certain mental health disorders or a history of substance abuse may disqualify a candidate for licensure. It does not matter how long ago these events occurred. The BNE requires a review of the individual s situation under a process called a declaratory order. If you believe you may have licensure eligibility issues, go to the BNE WEB site at to the section on Forms. From there, download the information on declaratory

6 order. A Petition for Declaratory Order must be submitted by the nursing candidate if any of the following criteria apply: a. If you have had any licensing authority; 1) reuse to issue you a license; 2) revoke a license; 3) annul a license; 4) cancel a license; 5) accept surrender of license;6)suspend a license; 7) a license on probation; 8) refuse to renew a professional license or certificate held by you now or previously; or 9) ever fine, censure, reprimand, or otherwise discipline a license to you. b. If you have been arrested in any state, territory, or country, including expunged offenses and deferred adjudication(s) with or without prejudice of guilt for anything other than a minor traffic violation. (DUI s, DWI s, and PI s must be reported and are not considered minor traffic violations). Effective 9/1/03, minor in possession (MIP) is no longer required to be reported to the Board. c. If you have ever been convicted, adjudged guilty by a court, pled guilty or pled nolo contender to any crime (felony or misdemeanor) whether or not a sentence was imposed (excluding minor traffic violations). d. If you have any criminal charges pending against you in any court. e. If you have been diagnosed, treated, or hospitalized in the past five (5) years for schizophrenia or other psychotic disorder, bipolar disorder, paranoid personality disorder, antisocial personality disorder, or borderline personality disorder. f. If you have been addicted to or treated for the use of alcohol or any other drug within the past five (5) years.

7 g. If you have been issued an order concerning eligibility for examination or licensure by any Board or if you have ever received a proposal of ineligibility. Expectations of Student Performance: Students are expected not to use, possess, sell, or transfer any alcoholic beverage or any illegal, illicit, or designer drug on the campus or while engaged in any College instructional, clinical, or extracurricular activities, Given the importance to Odessa College that the students in the nursing program as future health care providers and, given the unique needs of the Program, students must have a urine drug screening (UDS) performed upon admittance into the nursing program as part of the required health assessment. If positive for any drug, other than a drug that is prescribed, the student will not be allowed to enter the Nursing Program. The student is responsible for the cost of the test. Drug and/or alcohol testing can occur in for cause- situations when academic or clinical performance, conduct, or other activities indicate possible alcohol or drug use. The student is responsible for the cost of drug and/or alcohol testing. Students are required to participate in drug screening protocols established by clinical agencies utilized by the College.
