SECTION ONE INTRODUCTION
REPORT ON BASIC STATISTICS AND PLANNING PARAMETERS FOR TEACHER TRAINING COLLEGES IN GHANA / INTRODUCTION In an effort to provide adequate and reliable data and information available for policy formulation, planning and implementation of various programmes and projects in education in Ghana, the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports launched the Education Management Information System (EMIS) Project in January, 1997 with technical support during the first and second Phases from the Harvard University with funds from the World Bank and the Government of Ghana. As an integral part of the Free, Compulsory and Universal Basic Education (FCUBE) Programme, the EMIS Project was planned to build on the already existing EMIS established in 1988 in the Ministry as part of the Education Reforms. Through the EMIS, a strong database has been established within the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports. This is the third Yearbook produced for Teacher Training Colleges although data on Teacher Training Colleges has been obtained in previous years. institutional facilities. This year's information on Teacher Training Colleges as in the previous years has been produced at national and regional levels. The report is presented in four sections as follows. Section One gives a brief introduction of the report highlighting briefly the EMIS Project. Section Two gives a brief summary of the analysis of the data. An attempt has been made in the analysis to compare the previous census (2006/2007) results with those of the current census. Currently there are 38 public Teacher Training Colleges. Section Three gives a summary of tables, charts and maps for Teacher Training Colleges. The arrangement of tables followed immediately by maps and charts has been used to facilitate visualisation of the concepts being presented. Section Four provides detailed statistics at national and regional levels. This report was conducted to provide and upgrade basic data and planning parameters on enrolment, teaching staff and MOESS Page 1 EMIS Project
SECTION TWO SUMMARY OF FINDINGS
2. SUMMARY OF FINDINGS 2.1 Number of Teacher Training Colleges The number of teacher training colleges covered in this census is 38, representing 100.0% of the known number of public colleges as indicated in Table 2.1 below. At the moment there is no known private teacher training college in the country. 2.2 Enrolment in Teacher Training Colleges As shown in Table 2.2 below, enrolment in teacher training colleges is 26,100, showing an increase of 0.3% over the 2006/2007 figure of 26,025. Enrolment of male students is 13,813, representing a decrease of 1.2% when compared with the 2006/2007 figure of 13,978. Enrolment of female students is 12,287, representing an increase of 2.0% when compared with the 2006/2007 figure of 12,047. Table 2.1 Number of teacher training colleges (TTC) by type of education, 2006/ /2008 TYPE OF EDUCATION NUMBER OF TTC No. Existing 2006/ /2008 Public Private Total Regional distribution of teacher training colleges in Table 3.1 (page 7), Map 3.1 and Chart 3.1 (page 8) shows that the Volta Region and Ashanti Region have the highest number of teacher training colleges (7) each, while the Greater Accra, Upper East and West Regions has the lowest number (2). Table 2.2 Enrolment in teacher training colleges (TTC) by sex, 2006/ /2008 TYPE OF EDUCATION ENROLMENT IN TTC 2006/ /2008 % Change Male 13,978 13, Female 12,047 12, Total 26,025 26, Regional distribution of enrolment in teacher training colleges in Table 3.2 (page 9), Map 3.2 and Chart 3.2 (page 10) shows that the Ashanti Region has the highest enrolment in teacher training colleges (4,980) while the Upper West Region has the lowest enrolment (1,023). MOESS Page 2 EMIS Project
2.3 Enrolment in Technical Education in Teacher Training Colleges As shown in Table 2.3 below, enrolment in technical education in teacher training colleges is 2,259, showing a decrease of 8.3% over the 2006/2007 figure of 2,463. Enrolment of male students is 2,039, representing a decrease of 7.9% when compared with the 2006/2007 figure of 2,215. Enrolment of female students is 220, representing a decrease of 11.3% when related to the 2006/2007 figure of 248. Table 2.3 Enrolment in technical education in teacher training colleges (TTC) by sex, 2006/ /2008 SEX ENROLMENT IN TECHNICAL EDUCATION 2006/ /2008 % Change Male 2, Female Total 2, Regional distribution of enrolment in technical education in teacher training colleges in Table 3.3 (page 11), Chart 3.3 and Map 3.3 (page 12) shows that the Ashanti Region exhibits the highest enrolment in technical education (580) while the Greater Accra Region has the lowest figure (113). It is noted in the table that, for all regions, enrolment in technical education for boys is higher than that of girls. 2.4 Share of Female Enrolment in Teacher Training Colleges The percentage share of total female enrolment in teacher training colleges is 47.1%, showing an increase of 0.8% over the 2006/2007 figure of 46.3%. The percentage share of female enrolment is generally higher than that of their male counterparts. However, the reduction in the share of female enrolment in the first year suggests a gradual decline of female enrolment in Teacher Training Colleges in Ghana. Table 2.4 Percentage of female enrolment in teacher training colleges by year, 2006/ /2008 % OF FEMALE ENROLMENT Grade Year 1 Year 2 Year 3 Total 2006/ / % Change Regional distribution of percentage of female enrolment in teacher training colleges in Table 3.4 (page 13), Map 3.4 and Chart 3.4 (page 14) shows that the Central Region has the highest percentage of female enrolment (62.3%) while the Northern Region has the lowest proportion of female students (22.5%) in its teacher training colleges. MOESS Page 3 EMIS Project
2.5 Number of Tutors in Teacher Training Colleges As shown in Table 2.5 below, the total number of tutors in teacher training colleges is 1,396, showing a decrease of 0.6% over the 2006/2007 number of 1,405. The number of male tutors is 1,072, representing an increase of 1.4% when compared with the 2006/2007 figure of 1,057. The number of female tutors dropped from 348 in 2006/2007 to 324 in 2007/2008 academic year, representing a decrease of 6.9% when compared with the 2006/2007 figure. Upper West Region has the smallest figure (52). 2.6 Percentage of Trained Tutors in Teacher Training Colleges As presented in Table 2.6 below, the percentage of trained tutors in teacher training colleges is 99.1%, indicating a 0.1% a marginal increase of qualified teachers when compared with the 2006/2007 figure of 99.0%. Although male tutors are less qualified than female tutors, the proportion of male tutors who are qualified (98.9%) decreased by 0.2% when compared with the 2006/2007 figure of 99.1%. The percentage of qualified female tutors (100%) improved by 1.4% when compared with the 2006/2007 figure of 98.6%.
