LASER SAFETY INFORMATION LASER SAFETY WARNING The MK367 laser is a Class IV device and proper eye safety must always be used. As with any laser, never look directly at the laser in the beam path. The laser is too small to accept identification or warning labels so they are located here. It is the responsibility of the end-product manufacturer to create and apply any external labels as required by federal and local laws. In the United States of America (USA), all labels must conform to FDA regulation 21 CFR Ch.1, Only qualified personnel that are trained in solid-state laser applications should operate these systems. The laser should always be operated in a relatively clean environment. LASER HANDLING INFORMATION As with all laser devices, the resonator must be handled carefully. Never touch the optical surfaces of the laser. Check the optical surfaces for cleanliness using a microscope and clean only if needed. The optical surfaces should only be cleaned as a corrective action for marked power decrease or poor mode quality and should not be cleaned unless signs of contamination are clearly visible on the optical surfaces. Unnecessary cleaning will only shorten the life span of the optical coating. Handle laser optics with care. A scratch, trace of dirt, or film will diminish the laser's efficiency. Before cleaning optics insure your hands are clean and a clean work surface is available. Place a drop of Methanol in the center of a lens tissue. Place the wet portion of the lens tissue on the optic surface and slowly drag it across the optic. Make a single swipe across the surface of the optic. The lens tissue and optic should be nearly dry before completing the drag. Do not re-use the lens tissue as particles of dust and other contaminates picked up from the surface of the optic may scratch if dragged across with a second swipe. The laser may need to be held in place during this process. Examine the surface of the optic. If streaks or contamination can be seen, repeat the cleaning process using a fresh lens tissue. MK-367 LASER CHARACTERISTICS The MK-367 (or MK-480) laser was developed primarily for the ophthalmic and range-finder markets as a permanently aligned, reliable, low cost laser requiring minimal service and having a usable life in excess of 300,000 shots. 6 INSTALLATION 1. Remove power supply, laser, trigger module, and hand controller from the packing material. Carefully unwrap each item and inspect for damage. Please contact Kigre, Inc. immediately if any damage is suspected. 2. Connect the laser head to the trigger module. Align the three pins and gently push together until secure. Mount laser head as desired (refer to laser head mounting drawings on following pages). 3. Connect the trigger module to the HV power supply (unit with PFN). Align the plastic connector, push in and turn to secure. 4. Connect the hand controller to the HV power supply. Align the 9pin D-sub connector and push to secure. Refer to the Control I/O Pinout information above when not using the Kigre hand controller. 5. Attach the hand controller to your DVM meter with the supplied adapter cable and adapter plug as shown. Set the meter to the 20VDC scale or equivalent. The high voltage setting should be monitored via the hand controller s SMA connector. Use the supplied adapter cable to connect the SMA connector to a Digital Volt Meter (DVM). The scale factor is 1/100 (1 volt output = 100 volts actual on the PFN). Please note: An external fire BNC is available on the hand controller. Short the BNC contacts to fire. This connector is typically used with a footswitch, relay, opencollector transistor, or opto-isolator. DO NOT APPLY VOLTAGE TO THIS BNC. DO NOT GROUND. Use isolated contacts only. 6. Connect the AC/DC PS unit (12VDC, >35W, 2.5mm Ø pin, center pin is positive) to the hand controller. The supplied AC-DC power supply unit has a universal input range of VAC and works with both 50 and 60Hz AC input. MK367 Laser Components Operating Manual v4 Page 6
INSTALLATION (CONTINUED) HAND CONTROLLER MK367-HC Please note: Proper clamping of the MK367 laser is essential for reliable energy and beam quality, especially over temperature. Uniformly clamp only the flat surfaces in the center of the laser as shown. Do not attempt to clamp the ends of the laser as this will distort the laser beam. Please refer to the following drawings for reference. Please note: The 300,000 to 1,000,000 shot flash-lamp life of these units will be significantly shortened if the unit is operated in multiple-pulse (burst) output mode or fired continuously at external temperatures above 40 o C. MK367 Laser Components Operating Manual v4 Page 7
OPERATION 1. Refer to the laser s checkout sheet, included with the laser shipment. Near the bottom right of the checkout sheet (in the Final Burns section) is the recommended operating voltage (input energy) setting required for proper single shot laser output. The voltage value will be listed as the 60% above SP value. EXAMPLE DATA 2. Connect a volt meter (DVM) to the Scaled Voltage Monitor connector using the supplied adapter cable. Set the meter to the 20VDC or similar scale. This meter will be used to set the proper operating voltage (input energy). The Scaled Output monitor has a 1/100 ratio so 557 volts, for example will be 5.57 volts on the DVM meter. 3. Start at a lower energy setting until you are familiar with the unit's operation. Adjust the HV ADJ adjustment knob on the hand controller fully to the left (CCW) to begin. 4. Turn the toggle switch on the hand controller up to enable the high voltage power supply. The DVM should display ~ 0 volts. Gradually turn the HV ADJ knob clockwise (CW) to increase the high voltage value until it equals the recommended 60% above SP setting. SP stands for Single Pulse and is the recommended operating mode for the MK367 laser. Operating the laser at higher voltages (higher input energies) will drastically reduce the laser s lifetime. Specifically, it will reduce the flashlamp lifetime to approximately 30,000 shots well below the normal 300,000 + shot lifetime for the MK367 laser in single output pulse mode. 5. Momentarily press the fire button on the hand controller to fire the laser. WARNING: A sufficient bleed time of at least three (3) minutes should be allowed before handling any high voltage components or connections! MK367 Laser Components Operating Manual v4 Page 8
ENGINEERING NOTES 1) Use an energy detector, such as the Molectron Energy Max 500 Display and J25 detector shown, to verify laser output performance before installing these components. An Ophir Vega energy meter with Ophir PE25BF-DIF-C detector with diffuser can also be used. The Kigre MK367 laser uses a passive Q-switch to produce a short pulsewidth, high peak power laser output pulse. The output energy is determined by the Q-switch material and is not user adjustable. Slight variations in output energy are normal and are due to the nature of the passive Q-switch material. 2) These high peak power transmitters should NOT BE FIRED DIRECTLY INTO A HIGHLY REFLECTIVE NEAR FIELD SURFACE! Back reflected radiation may cause damage to the rod and Q-switch. Please call Kigre sales for more information. 3) MK-Series laser are capable of continuous operation at up to 1/3 Hz maximum rep-rate when properly mounted in an equivalent heat sink fixture to Kigre's # MK Up to 1Hz continuous duty operation is possible with the aircooled MK-367AC or when the MK-367 is mounted in a water-cooled mount such as the Kigre MDL# MK The 300,000 to 1,000,000 shot flash-lamp life of these units will be significantly shortened if the unit is operated in multiple-pulse (burst) output mode or fired continuously at external temperatures above 40 o C. MK367 Laser Components Operating Manual v4 Page 9
ENGINEERING NOTES (CONTINUED) 4) When holding the laser, use only the two flat mounting surfaces near its middle. The Kigre drawing A1140-A in this manual gives a good example. Gentle, even pressure in this area is best. A small amount of thermal grease helps improve thermal conductivity between the laser and heatsink mount. Never attach anything to the ends of the laser as doing so can move the OC or HR mirrors out of alignment. 5) Each laser is shipped with test data as shown at the end of this manual. Please note the single and double pulse threshold voltages indicated on the test sheet. For reliable single pulse laser output, it is best to operate 50-60% of the way between these two voltage values. You set the high voltage level via the program pins on the power supply's 9-pin D-sub connector. 6) The voltage program pins have a range of volts input = volts output. In other words: 2V=400V; 3V=600V; 3.5V=700V, etc. To determine the proper input voltage for your laser, the best method is to start at about 2V and gradually increase until the laser starts lasing. Due to the passive Q-switch design of this laser, there will be no laser output until the pump energy exceeds the proper threshold. Keep increasing the program voltage until the laser starts to double pulse. You can easily see this using a laser energy meter. Then lower your program voltage until it is 1/2 way between the single and double pulse threshold values. Pin 6 is the program voltage + input and pin 7 is the program voltage return input. An alternative method is to use a 10K-ohm trimpot between pins 5, 6, and 7 as indicated on page 4 of the manual. In either case, never exceed 3.75 volts input (~750V). 7) The actual high voltage setting can be monitored using pin 8 of the D-sub connector. Pin 2 is the return. Pin 8 has a 1/100 volt scale. In other words, a 500 volt setting equals 5.00 volts on this pin. However, you must use a high impedance device to measure this voltage. A DVM meter works best. Do not use a probe or scope with < 50 mega-ohms or it will alter the voltage scale. For example, don't directly use the 1 Mega-ohm scope input to measure this voltage. Rather, use the scope with a 10x logic probe. Once the program voltage is set properly for the laser, you should not need to continually change it. MK367 Laser Components Operating Manual v4 Page 10
ENGINEERING NOTES (CONTINUED) The 300,000 to 1,000,000 shot flash-lamp life of these units will be significantly shortened if the unit is operated in multiple-pulse (burst) output mode. MK367 Laser Components Operating Manual v4 Page 11
