(1 CE credit for CFPs and/or CPAs and/or 1 NYS Insurance CE - NYCR ) Managing Healthcare Costs in Retirement Speaker: GRETCHEN S. MILLER, MBA, CFP The cornerstone of retirement income planning is creating predictable and sustainable streams of income to cover essential expenses in retirement. One of those expenses is healthcare. Increasing medical costs, longer life expectancies, elimination of employer provided retiree health plans and the uncertainty of Medicare makes healthcare a critically important aspect of retirement planning. Topics of this presentation will include: understanding and estimating healthcare costs in retirement; what Medicare covers, and what it doesn t, and what it costs; the new healthcare laws under the Affordable Care Act; and strategies to manage and cover healthcare costs in retirement. (1 CE credit for CFPs and/or CPAs and/or 1 NYS Insurance CE - NYCR ) Advisors Gamma: How intelligent financial planning decisions can result in better retirement income outcomes. Speaker: PETER DUGERY This presentation will introduce a concept called Gamma, which is designed to measure the additional expected retirement income achieved by an individual investor making intelligent financial-planning decisions. A retiree faces a number of risks during retirement, some unique to retirement planning and not concerns during accumulation. We will explore five factors that can provide Gamma to a retiree s portfolio: (1) total wealth asset-allocation; (2) dynamic withdrawal strategy; (3) annuity allocation; (4) asset location and withdrawal sourcing; and (5) liabilityrelative optimization.
Elder Law and Estate Planning: The Basics and Beyond Speaker: RONALD FATOULLAH, ESQ. This session will focus on the basic concepts of elder law and estate planning that every financial advisor should be aware of. It will also bring attendees up to date on the latest trends and changes in the law. Topics will include Medicaid mandatory managed care, NYS estate tax changes and a review of the latest cases. 11:50 AM-12:20 PM Break 2 EXHIBIT HALL OPEN Visit with Exhibitors Network Time Coffee Break 12:20-1:10 PM Breakout Session 2 Select One Planning With Social Security Speaker: PETER CHANDLER, CFP, MBA This course is designed to give the financial/insurance professional a clear understanding of the importance of Social Security as the foundation of every retirement plan. The course will review the following: Background of Social Security (OASDI); The various OASDI Programs; Eligibility Criteria and How to Calculate Benefits; Strategies to Maximize benefits for Singles and Married Couples (Case Studies); Use of Annuities and IRAs to Maximize Social Security Benefits; and Taxation of Social Security Benefits. (1 CE credit for CFPs and/or CPAs and/or 1 NYS Insurance CE NYCR ) Dynamic Retirement Spending Strategies Speaker: MARIA BRUNO, CFP Presentation will address key themes that advisors are hearing from their clients who are retired, or approaching retirement. These include portfolio strategies ranging from how to invest during retirement, sustainable spending strategies (including review of the 4% spending rule in today s interest rate environment), importance of tax-efficiency, and planning strategies such as Roth conversions. Reverse Mortgages as a Retirement Planning Tool Speaker: ROBERT TOLLIN This presentation will cover what every retiree and financial planner should understand about reverse mortgages. As reverse mortgages are for homeowners 62 years of age or older who have equity in their home, seniors may turn that equity into cash, helping to make ends meet when investments aren t performing as expected; use the money to repay mortgages, then put any remaining funds in a line of credit or withdraw the money as a lump sum or monthly payments to themselves or any combination thereof. In this session, Robert Tollin will aim to educate financial advisors about the ways in which a reverse mortgage can be used to safely and strategically leverage home equity as retirement asset for their clients.
Investment Strategies Focus on the Fundamentals of the Future Speaker: ANTHONY J. CAMILLERI The world is changing rapidly. Is your portfolio keeping up? The global economy and equity markets face so many short-term headwinds every year that it s easy to overlook positive developments around the world. Investment professionals are finding many attractive long-term opportunities. In this session Anthony Camilleri will discuss three themes for 2014 and beyond: (1) New geography of investing; (2) Innovation allocation; and (3) Income outcomes. 1:10-1:40 PM Luncheon 1:40-2:40 PM General Session Quality of LIfe Keynote Speaker: JOHN DIEHL, CFP, ChFC, CLU This presentation is based on the premise that to quote Dr. Joe Coughlin, founder and director of MIT AgeLab Retirement planning is about more than money. A focus on finance in retirement is not incorrect, but it is woefully incomplete. Financial advisors can engage clients in by asking the three simple surprisingly pertinent questions revealed in the presentation, and help them begin planning for a meaningful retirement. Many clients are distracted and unengaged, and traditional, numbers-based approaches to financial planning have lost effectiveness. Financial advisors need to initiate a comprehensive, holistic planning discussion that makes an ambiguous retirement future often decades away more tangible to your clients. MIT AgeLab has identified three simple yet revealing questions you should ask your clients to prompt an assessment of how prepared they are to live well in older age, and to help them commit to planning for that future today. The MIT AgeLab (agelab.mit.edu) works with businesses and governments worldwide to develop new approaches, data, and technologies to improve the lives of older adults and those who care for them. Based in MIT s Engineering Systems Division, the AgeLab applies a multidisciplinary and systems approach to invent life tomorrow for people 45 and older including innovations in transportation, longevity planning, health and well-being, and home services. 2:40-3:10 PM Break 3 EXHIBIT HALL OPEN Last Visit with Exhibitors Dessert & Coffee Stations
3:10-4:00 PM Breakout Session 3 Select One Planning Opportunities with IRAs and Qualified Plans Speaker: TOM DUNCUN, JD, CLU, ChFC IRA, Qualified Plan, and 403b distribution rules are numerous, filled with exceptions, and in some cases apply consistently across plan types and in other cases apply differently across plan types. We will examine several qualified money issues that consistently generate questions for advisors and clients. Most of the issues we ll look at concern retirement income planning and/or required minimum distributions for IRAs, qualified plans and 403(b)s, but we ll begin our discussion with a look at a common beneficiary designation, the surviving spouse, and what options that surviving spouse has regarding the IRA/Qualified Plan money that was left to them by their deceased spouse. (1 CE credit for CFPs and/or CPAs and/or 1 NYS Insurance CE - NYCR ) Invest in Real Estate Like an Institution Speaker: JESSICA PEREZ Investors today face a perfect storm of challenges in their portfolios. Interest rates are lower than they have been in 6 decades, uncertainty remains in the global equity markets, and inflation is on the horizon with unprecedented fiscal stimulus packages. In order to address these fundamental challenges, investors can increase real assets and diversification in their portfolios. Institutional investors tend to broadly diversify their equity portfolios, including large cap, mid cap, small cap, growth, value, domestic, international, emerging, etc., and fixed income portfolios, including different rating levels for government, corporate and high yield bonds. Investors should consider doing the same for their real assets portfolios. Traditionally, when investing in real assets, investors have most commonly turned to developed real estate, which is the most readily accessible real estate asset class for individual investors. While financial advisors can help investors find the appropriate mix of real assets in their portfolios, we are here to educate you on diversifying your portfolio using the various stages of real estate. There are different ways to invest in real estate. The three main areas we will discuss are WHY investors use real estate, WHERE you can invest in real estate, and HOW to invest. We will review the various risks and return profiles for the different stages of real estate from raw land, land planning, development, and developed real estate. Investors can use the various stages to reduce risk, achieve growth, reduce correlation to the stock market, for diversification, for a potential hedge against inflation, and for potential tax advantages. Certain markets have more demand for real estate than others. We will provide an in depth analysis on where the opportunity exists in the United States. Demand for real estate is driven by population growth, strong job growth, and affordability. Real estate can enhance your portfolio and help diversify your assets. You should consider the different stages of real estate and how each stage can help you achieve your portfolio goals.
Buying and Selling a Financial Planning Practice Speaker: BRIAN GRISE This session will cover the following: (1) Overview of many structures and processes for buying or selling a practice. (2) Valuation factors, current market multiples and upcoming trends. (3) Steps to increase the value of a practice. (4) Strategic planning to achieve a successful succession, transition, or continuity plan. Sustainable Investing Not Yesterday s Socially Responsible Investing Speaker: ANDREW FRIEDMAN, CFP Sustainable Investing is defined as an investment approach that integrates longterm Environmental, Social and Governance criteria into investment and ownership decision-making with the objective of generating superior risk-adjusted financial returns (World Economic Forum). Sustainable investing incorporates more than just the shareholder as the only stakeholder in a corporation. The concept of Sustainable Investing has evolved over the years into a measurable matrix of impactful criteria that is becoming more relevant in today s society and investors decision making. Andrew Friedman will discuss these and other pertinent issues about Sustainable Investing. 4:10-5:00 PM Post-Conference Session 1: The Changing LTC Planning Spectrum: A Case Study Review Speaker: ROBERT M. VANDY, CLU, ChFC, LUTCF, CLTC Long-Term Care (LTC) planning continues to be a challenge for many New Yorkers. Public funding programs like Medicare and Medicaid face ongoing fiscal pressure (and NY has even moved to a Medicaid Managed Care model for Home Health Care), and the private LTC Insurance Industry has seen volatility unlike anything it has experienced before. At the same time, in a world formerly dominated by traditional LTC Insurance as its [almost] exclusive funding tool, new options have emerged as potential solutions to this increasing problematic planning problem. In this session, we will look briefly at a history of LTC financing, including both public and private tools that have historically been used. We will consider current sources of LTC cost funding, and provide a backdrop for advisors to consider as their clients plan for a need that may, in practical terms, be 20 or 30 years (or more) in the future. We will use case studies as a means to put various planning and financing goals in their proper context. (1 CE credit for CFPs and/or CPAs and/or 1 NYS Insurance CE - NYCR ) 5:10-6:00 PM Post-Conference Session 2: Estate Planning With Annuities Speaker: CHRISTOPHER J. LYNN In this session, we ll look at the different ways annuities can impact estate planning. Several case studies are discussed to provide the attendee with a wellrounded understanding of annuities.
