Under the terms f a life insurance plicy, the insurer prmises t pay a certain sum t a persn yu chse (yur beneficiary) upn yur death, in exchange fr yur premium payments. What are the ptential benefits f life insurance? One f the mst cmmn reasns fr buying life insurance is t replace the lss f incme that wuld ccur in the event f yur death. Life insurance can be used t pay ff debt such as mrtgages, car lans, and credit card debt, leaving ther remaining assets intact fr yur family. Life insurance prceeds can als be used t pay fr final expenses and estate taxes. When shuld yu purchase/hld life insurance? Yur life insurance needs will depend n a number f factrs, including if yu are married, the size f yur family, the nature f yur financial bligatins, yur life stage, and yur gals. 2 What are the different types f life insurance? Term: Term insurance is typically the least expensive way t purchase a substantial death benefit. Term plicies prvide life insurance prtectin fr a specific perid f time (subject t the claims-paying ability f the insurer). If yu die during the cverage perid, yur beneficiary receives the plicy death benefit. If yu live t the end f the term, the plicy simply terminates, unless it autmatically renews fr anther perid. Term plicies are available fr a fixed perid f time (e.g., 10, 15, 20, r 30 years). Types f term cverage: Grup term: Prvided r purchased thrugh an emplyer. Usually ends upn the terminatin f emplyment. Private term: Purchased utside f ne s emplyment. Private term plicies can be purchased thrugh a licensed insurance agent. Permanent/Cash Value: With permanent insurance yu agree t pay an insurance cmpany a set premium fr a set amunt f insurance cverage fr yur lifetime. Permanent insurance is life insurance that in thery des nt expire. It cmbines a death benefit with a savings prtin. Premium payments are greater than necessary t prvide the life insurance benefit in the early years f the plicy, s that a reserve can be accumulated t make up the shrtfall in premiums necessary t prvide the insurance in the later years. Shuld the plicy wner discntinue the plicy, this reserve, knwn as the cash value, is returned t the plicy wner, subject t applicable surrender r early withdrawal charges. Mst cmmn types f permanent cverage: Whle life: Typically the mst cmmn type f permanent life insurance. Yu generally make level (equal) premium payments fr life, and the death benefit and minimum cash value are predetermined and guaranteed. Universal life: Has mre flexibility than a whle life plicy. Yu may pay premiums at any time, in any amunt (subject t certain limits), as lng as plicy expenses and the cst f insurance cverage are met. The amunt f insurance cverage can be changed, and the cash value will grw at a declared interest rate, which may vary ver time. Variable life: Similar t whle life, yu pay a level premium fr life. Hwever, the death benefit and cash value fluctuate depending n the perfrmance f investments in what are knwn as subaccunts. A subaccunt is a pl f investr funds prfessinally managed t pursue a stated investment bjective. The plicy wner selects the subaccunts in which the cash value shuld be invested. Disability Insurance What is disability insurance? Disability insurance is a frm f insurance cverage that prtects against a lss f incme due t the inability t cmplete the cre functins f ne s wn jb r ccupatin. What are the ptential benefits f disability insurance? Accrding t the Insurance Infrmatin Institute, it is estimated that 43% f 40-year-lds will suffer a lng-term disability lasting 90 days r lnger by the time they reach age P age
3 Disability insurance prvides incme replacement that, if nt sufficiently cvered, culd have a significant impact n husehld finances and retirement planning. When shuld yu purchase/hld disability insurance? Items t cnsider: If yu suffered an injury r illness and culd nt wrk fr days, mnths r even years: If yu're single, d yu have ther means f supprt? If yu're married, yu may be able t rely n yur spuse fr incme, but yu prbably als have many financial bligatins. Culd yur spuse's incme supprt yur entire family? Des yur emplyer ffer disability insurance? Is yur current cverage sufficient? Are yu pssibly ver insured? Typically maximum eligible benefits cver up t 60 t 65% f grss cmpensatin. Can yu affrd t self-insure? Understand the cst vs. benefit. What are the different types f disability insurance? Shrt-term disability: Pays a certain percentage f an emplyee s weekly salary fr a specified amunt f time, typically 10 t 26 weeks, if he r she is ill r injured and cannt perfrm the duties f his r her jb. Shrt-term disability is typically emplyer-paid but als can be purchased by the emplyee. Lng-term disability: Picks up after shrt-term disability insurance is finished. It pays a percentage f mnthly salary fr the perid f time specified in the plicy, usually 5 t 10 years, r t age 65. Disability plicies can be purchased thrugh: Grup disability plans: The mst cmmn kind f disability insurance, grup plans are typically ffered thrugh yur emplyer. Grup plans typically d nt replace yur full paycheck, with a reimbursement rate f abut 2/3 f yur salary being typical. Furthermre, grup plans ften place a mnthly r yearly cap n the dllar amunt yu can be paid, r set a maximum timeframe fr benefits which culd be as little as tw years. It is imprtant t read the fine print n grup plans t understand yur cverage. Individual disability plans: If yur emplyer des nt ffer a grup plan r yu dn't like what yu are ffered, yu can shp arund as an individual. Keep in mind that yur price is based n yur unique situatin and needs. Individual plans are generally cheaper if yu are yung and healthy and cstly if yu are lder. Individual plices have mre ptins and prtability t keep the disability cverage in place if yu change jbs. Supplemental disability plans: Supplemental disability cverage is an additinal layer t help pay fr medical r living expenses that may nt be cvered by a lng-term plan. Fr instance, if yu have an emplyer-spnsred grup plan that pays just 50% f yur paycheck, fr a mdest mnthly fee yu may be able t add a supplemental plicy t bring that amunt up t the 2/3 f yur salary level. Taxatin f disability plicy benefits: Emplyer-paid plicies are typically a pre-tax benefit. If yu receive disability benefits frm an emplyer-paid plicy, the benefits yu receive are taxable t yu, unless yur emplyer included the premium as part f yur grss incme. Individually paid plicies are typically a pst-tax benefit. If yu pay fr yur plicy premiums with after-tax dllars, the benefits yu receive are nt taxable. 3 P age

Prperty insurance cvers a variety f risks assciated with prperty, including real estate and persnal prperty. Generally, casualty insurance cvers risks arising ut f actins tward thers. What are the ptential benefits f prperty and casualty insurance? It allws individuals and businesses t exchange the risk f a large lss fr the certainty f smaller peridic payments knwn as premiums. Fr a set premium, an insurance cmpany assumes the risk f a large lss. Prperty and casualty insurance als assumes yu pay a deductible. A deductible is the amunt f expense yu agree t pay fr a claim befre an insurance plicy starts t pay. When shuld yu purchase/hld prperty and casualty insurance? Sme things t cnsider when evaluating yur needs: Are yu adequately insured t cver current replacement cst f yur residence and cntents? Did yu acquire any new valuables ver the past year? Cnfirm value and limits f insurance. Cnsider paying ut f pcket fr small claims. Cnsider increasing yur deductible. What are the different types f prperty and casualty insurance? The mst cmmn types include: Hmewners: Prvides financial prtectin against disasters. A standard hmewner s plicy insures the structure f yur hme as well as the persnal prperty within it. It cvers physical damage t yur prperty as well as the legal respnsibility fr any injuries t thers suffered n yur prperty. A hmewner s plicy cvers damage caused by mst disasters. There are few exceptins. Yu must purchase specific plicies fr damage caused by flds and earthquakes. T save n premium dllars, cnsider selecting a higher deductible yu wuld pay ut-f-pcket per lss. Hmewners may select deductibles f $2,500 r higher as t many small claims can cause yur premium t increase r yur insurance t be drpped by yur current insurance cmpany. Riders can be added t yur hmewner s insurance fr: Recreatinal vehicles (bat, etc.) Jewelry Cllectibles Umbrella (excess liability): If yu are sued fr sme type f accident, yur standard hmewners r aut plicy will prvide yu with sme liability cverage up t a limit set in the plicy. Unfrtunately, we live in a litigius sciety. It s extremely imprtant t have an extra layer f liability prtectin prvided by a persnal umbrella liability plicy. 4 P age
5 Aut: An umbrella plicy takes effect when yu reach the limit n the underlying liability cverage in yur hmewners r aut plicy. Yu can buy a $1 millin persnal umbrella liability plicy fr a few hundred dllars in premium per year. The cst per millin typically decreases fr additinal millin dllar increments f cverage. It is highly recmmended t buy umbrella cverage at least equal t yur net wrth. Mst insurers will require a minimum f $250,000 f liability insurance n yur aut plicy and $300,000 f liability insurance n yur hmewner s plicy befre prviding an umbrella liability plicy fr $1 millin f additinal cverage. Umbrella liability cverage is typically purchased frm the same insurer that prvides yur autmbile insurance. Aut insurance prtects yu against a financial lss shuld yu have an accident. Yu agree t pay a premium and the insurance cmpany agrees t pay yur lsses as defined in yur plicy. Medical cverage: Pays fr the cst f treating injuries suffered in an accident, rehabilitatin and smetimes lst wages and funeral expenses. In rder t save sme premium dllars n autmbile insurance, cnsider selecting the highest deductible yu might feel cmfrtable paying ut-f-pcket fr a claim. A cmmn deductible is arund $1,000. Health Insurance What is health insurance? Health insurance is a cntract between an insurance cmpany and individual r emplyer cvering an individual. The insured individual s bligatins may be as fllws: Premium: The amunt the individual r emplyer pays as a benefit t purchase the cverage. Deductible: The amunt an individual must pay ut-f-pcket befre the insurance cmpany starts t cver expenses. C-payment: The amunt f expense an individual must pay ut-f-pcket fr a specific service such as a dctr visit r fr a prescriptin. What are the ptential benefits f health insurance? Health insurance cvers the risk f incurring large medical expenses. A health insurance plicy is nt meant t cver all f yur health needs, but instead t cver catastrphic health insurance csts. We recmmend that yu discuss yur needs with a qualified health insurance representative. When shuld yu purchase/hld health insurance? In general: Individual r emplyer prvided plans during yur wrking years. Medicare Supplement Plan cverage in retirement, assuming yu are cvered by Medicare. 6 Visin / dental needs and available cverage. Increasing r decreasing deductible, and the impact that has n premium payments. Fr a wrking cuple with emplyer spnsred plans, evaluate cverage n each t determine which plan (r parts f a plan) may make sense fr the husehld. Are yu able t fund a Health Savings Accunt r Flexible Spending Accunt? What are the different types f health insurance? Emplyer prvided health insurance plans: Cafeteria and Flexible Spending Plans: Emplyer allws emplyee t chse between different insurance plans t meet their current needs. Health Savings Accunts (HSAs): A recent alternative t traditinal health plans. It is a savings prduct that allws an emplyee t save fr his r her health care expenses pretax. Yu wn and cntrl yur HSA and yu decide hw yu want t spend yur healthcare dllars. Written in cnjunctin with the belw: High Deductible Health Plans: A less expensive health plan that kicks in after a certain deductible is met. Prir t meeting the deductible, health care expenses can be met with the funds frm a Health Savings Accunt (HSA). Individual Plicies: If yu are nt happy with yur emplyer prvided health insurance plicy r yu are nt cvered by an emplyer health insurance plicy, yu can purchase an individual r family plicy in the pen market. Medicare Supplement Plans: Offered by private cmpanies, can help pay sme f the health care csts nt cvered by Medicare (i.e. c-payments, c-insurance, deductibles, etc.). Als referred t as Medigap plans, sme plicies ffer cverage fr services such as medical care when yu travel utside the U.S. Medigap plicies generally dn t cver lng-term care insurance, visi, r dental care. Lng-Term Care Insurance What is lng-term care (LTC) insurance? Lng-term care is care that yu need if yu are unable t perfrm the basic activities f daily living (ADLs) such as dressing, bathing, eating, tileting, walking, and hygiene. In additin, Alzheimer s r dementia patients can require specialized lng-term care. Key features include: Benefit amunt: The daily benefit amunt is the maximum yur plicy will pay fr yur care each day, generally ranging frm $50 t $350 per day. Benefit perid: The length f time yur plicy will pay benefits (i.e., 2 years, 4 years, lifetime). Eliminatin perid: The number f days yu must pay fr yur wn care befre the plicy begins paying benefits (i.e., 20 days, 90 days). Types f facilities included: Many plicies cver care in a variety f settings including yur wn hme, assisted living facilities, adult day care centers, and nursing hmes. Inflatin prtectin: With inflatin prtectin, yur benefit will increase by a certain percentage each year. It's an ptinal feature available at additinal cst, enabling yur cverage t keep pace with rising prices. What are the ptential benefits f lng-term care insurance? Cntrary t what many peple may believe, Medicare and private health insurance prgrams d nt pay fr the majrity f LTC services that mst peple need. 6 P age
7 In Minnesta, the average cst f nursing hme care is $60,000 per year. Lng-term care insurance is insurance yu can purchase t fill this vid. When shuld yu purchase/hld lng-term care insurance? There are a number f reasns peple plan fr lng-term care. Sme include: They wuld like t stay in their hme lnger, even if they becme unable t care fr themselves. T help prtect their investment and retirement assets. They d nt want t burden their children. A desire t leave mre f their assets t heirs and selected charities. If yu expect t have very little financial resurces when yu might need lng-term care services yu might qualify fr Medicaid, a gvernment prgram that pays fr medical and lng-term care expenses fr peple withut the means t pay. If yu are smene in this situatin, yu prbably may nt have the financial resurces t buy lng-term care insurance. On the ther hand, if yu are lucky enugh t have significant mnetary assets when yu need lng-term care services, yu als likely wn t need t purchase lng-term care insurance as yu can ptentially pay fr lngterm care csts ut-f-pcket. Peple that fall in-between these tw categries shuld cnsider purchasing a lng-term care insurance plicy. Lng-term care insurance can be expensive. Typically, peple start lking at lng-term care insurance cverage in their later 50s t early 60s. The yunger and healthier yu are when yu purchase lng-term care insurance, the lwer the premium cst. If yu have already had a significant health issue, it is pssible that an insurer can deny yu fr lng-term cverage. What are the different types f lng-term care insurance?
