Outreach is Key: Meeting the Healthcare Needs of Pubic Housing Residents
Objectives Overview of Public Housing Residents Demographics Identify new niches for safety net providers Ways PHPCs and other safety net providers can work together Importance of having case management/navigation Training opportunities
Overview of Public Housing Residents Demographics
Demographics 1 Residents of public housing are predominantly people of white race (50%) and non-hispanic ethnicity (76%). 2 Public housing is often in urban areas, situated on the eastern coast of the U.S. and dispersed throughout large states such as California and Texas. Approximately 2.2 million people live in public housing. 5 The average annual income is $13,722; most people live in extremely low economic conditions (30% below median income). 6 Health access may be limited for some because 33% of residents are uninsured. 3 Over 50% of residents have less than a high school diploma. 4 7 The majority of residents are from single, femaleled households. 8 Due to public housing being in low-income urban areas, health care facilities are limited. Residents are also distanced from social services and healthy food supplies.
Demographics
Public Housing Residents This is data from HRSA s 2011 Uniformed Data System (UDS) which collects national data from health centers across the country.
