1 EASTERN WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY Department of Education Master of Education (M. Ed.) Degree in Curriculum & Instruction Combined with Professional Certification (Pro-Cert) Off-Campus Cohort Model Program Descriptions March 2008 The Department of Education is committed to engage in partnership with school districts to work together to offer graduate programs that provide in-service teachers with the professional development opportunities to pursue study and investigate research based best educational practices. The Master of Education (M.Ed) degree in Curriculum and Instruction offers candidates the platform to complete a M. Ed. Degree, and the Professional Certificate (Pro-Cert) at the same time. This program can be diversified to meet the needs of candidates who pursue 1) both Pro-Cert and M. Ed., 2) M. Ed. only, or 3) Pro-Cert only. A cohort group will be formed based on the geographical location. The program will start any term when the enrollment is financially sufficient to support the program operation. Majority of instructions and interactions between faculty and the program candidates will take place locally. Program Features This program features: 1. a cohort model used to promote a professional learning community among the program candidates and program faculty; 2. diversified courses to meet individual professional s educational needs; 3. collaboration between EWU education faculty and the local school district; 4. site-based course content following the principles of research based best instructional practice to integrate the school district expectations; 5. quality instruction and evidence of learning according to the WA state and national teacher education standards. Program Goals This program is to advance candidates proficiencies related to knowledge, skills and dispositions in alignment with the WA State and NCATE standards. At the end of the program, the candidates will achieve: 1. Knowledge of research based best educational practice; 2. Skills in integrating educational theories into classroom practice to produce a positive impact upon students learning; 1
2 3. Ability to use student performance data to reduce achievement gap; 4. Ability to evaluate and assess students learning using appropriate instruments; 5. Understanding diversity among students and utilization of differentiated instructional strategies to help all students learning; 6. Willingness and being capable to work with parents and the community to promote students learning; 7. Development of professional development growth plan by self-assessment according to the OSPI guidelines and expectations of Professional Growth Team; 8. Implementation of professional growth plan in the classroom practice and accomplishment of professional growth portfolio. Course Design & Delivery This is a program composed of 48 credit hours. EWU faculty will model professional learning community behaviors by working collaboratively with adjunct faculty locally identified to offer the courses. Considering in-service professionals daily workload and the time to travel to evening classes, we use a repertoire of instructional modes to make this program accessible to all candidates. The Instructional modes include: traditional means, i.e., in-class lectures, discussion; integration of technology, i.e., hybrid courses to combine traditional instruction with Blackboard and online courses; and internet advising as much as possible. Courses will be offered in the evenings and at weekends. 1.
