Introduction At the center of all organizations is data and without access to its data an organization will not function for long. Therefore, for organizations of all types and sizes, data protection is an important business requirement. Whether this data is customer information, intellectual property, financial reports, the payroll, manufacturing processes or user created documents, it must be protected against virus attacks, accidental and malicious user error and potential hardware failures. Today most enterprise and large-scale businesses have processes to protect their data. HP recognizes that smaller and mid-sized organizations need equally good data protection but must achieve this without the same level of IT resources available in larger organizations. To meet the data protection needs of these smaller and mid-sized organizations, HP offers HP Data Protector Express backup and recovery software. This smart and flexible software meets data protection requirements simply and cost effectively. It is designed to be installed and managed without the need for specialized skills or training but without this ease of use compromising its functionality or flexibility. Data Protector Express is easy to use Data Protector Express is designed to protect data on multiple operating systems, using fixed (disk) and removable (disk, tape, and CD/DVD) backup media. It has a flexible, high-performance architecture. All protected machines and backup devices are managed as part of the Data Protector Express Storage Domain. Simple graphical user interface All machines and devices in the Storage Domain are managed using a simple graphical user interface (GUI). In a Data Protector Express Storage Domain, all machines and backup devices are known and accessible by all machines and managed using the same GUI. This GUI runs on Microsoft Windows and Linux (on X Windows) with a Console User Interface (CUI) for NetWare. Using this interface, multiple views are presented of the Data Protector Express installation and operation; examples are shown in Figures 1a, 1b and 1c. Wizards for frequent tasks To make the execution of frequent tasks easy, Data Protector Express includes many Wizards. There are wizards to create and schedule backup jobs and restore jobs. There are also wizards to prepare disk for disk-to-disk backup and for media management tasks. All wizards guide you through each step necessary to create the job or task you select. Once complete, the Wizard creates a job that is saved for later use or revision. Automatic Device Detection When you start Data Protector Express, the software automatically recognizes all installed devices, virtual and physical, that are available to use for backup. The detected devices are then displayed in the GUI and available for backup. From the Devices view of the Favorites desk bar you can easily perform operations using the device such as configuring the device, erasing media, formatting media and ejecting media. The status of all detected devices is shown and warning icons alert users if the device is not operating properly or unavailable. 2

Figure 1a. It is easy to view and choose which backup device to use. Figure 1b. Wizards are available, from the Favorites desk bar, to automate the most frequently run tasks. Figure 1c. It is easy to see the progress of jobs by looking at the job status view. 3

Reduced interface for frequent tasks and status An alternative and smaller interface, called the Quick Access Control, is available to make monitoring and executing frequent tasks even easier. On Windows machines the Quick Access Control is opened from a system tray icon (Figure 2). This system tray icon also changes appearance to instantly show the state of the Data Protector Express installation. To use the Quick Access Control, the Data Protector Express service must be running. If the service is not running, it can be started by selecting Settings from the Quick Access Control menu. Figure 2. The Quick Access Control is opened by right-clicking the icon in the System Tray (Windows) and makes running and monitoring day to day tasks faster and easier. icon status Disconnected Job failure Pending alerts Job in progress Idle Jobs and media can be accessed and created using the Quick Access Control and alerts and logs can be accessed. For less frequent and more complex tasks, the main GUI can be started from the Quick Access Control menu by selecting Open Administrator. Calendar-like graphical scheduler By its nature, backup is a repetitive task. Efficiency and reliability are increased by automating backup jobs. Data Protector Express includes eleven, pre-built, ready-to-use, automated, schedules based on standard types of backup job scheduling. It is also possible for users to create custom schedules by specifying the type and frequency of jobs. Job execution frequency is specified, as part of a job s properties, with the robust and easy-to-use graphical scheduler (Figure 3a and 3b). New to Data Protector Express is a pre-configured Daily Append rotation type (Figure 3a). This is for organizations that have a relatively small amount of data to protect and want to minimize the cost of data protection by using a single tape drive and reducing the time spent handling media. In it s default set-up, the Daily Append rotation uses 4 pieces of media and requires just one media change per week. Even with this low investment it provides the security of a maximum of 24 hours data loss, the ability to recover to any point in the past 4 weeks plus the added protection of being able to take media off-site. 4

Figure 3a. The Daily Append backup schedule (default settings) displayed using the graphical scheduler. By clicking on each day, the backup job and media to be used is displayed. Figure 3b. Some of the included rotation schedules are based on the industry standard Grandfather-Father-Son schemes. This is the representation, in the graphical scheduler, of the included GFS-62 schedule that has a mix of incremental, differential and full backups run at 15-minute intervals. 5

User administration In organizations where more than one person will carry out backup and recovery tasks, the designated Administrator can enable multiple users. To maintain security, the Administrator manages users and grants them permissions for specified tasks and access to specified resources (Figure 4). In larger organizations with many users, groups are used to make managing users easier. Once set up, users log on to the Data Protector Express Storage Domain using their user name and password. The Administrator can audit user activity. Figure 4. User security and access is easily managed for one or more users. Figure 5. It is very easy to automatically update all machines in the Data Protector Express Storage Domain to a new version or with a new service pack. 6

Software Version Administration Typically as new versions or service packs are released you will want to move to the latest version. To make this easy, Data Protector Express has the capability to automatically update all machines in the Storage Domain whenever a new version of Data Protector Express is installed on the Backup Server. This automatic upgrade option is easily set from the Administration menu and by selecting Configure Domain Server as shown in Figure 5. For testing purposes or to go back to an earlier version it is also possible to automatically downgrade all machines in the Storage Domain to an earlier version of Data Protector Express. Advanced features in an easy-to-use product HP Data Protector Express is designed for simple operation that does not require specialist IT skills or a big investment in learning and training. This simplicity extends to the way the product is structured and licensed. Costs and complexities are minimized. The software offers value, scalability and flexibility. The Data Protector Express Backup Server (base product) offers a high degree of functionality to which options are added, non-disruptively, as required, to extend this functionality. Data encryption Increasingly business practices and regulations require that backup data is encrypted, particularly if the backup media is to be transported offsite. Data Protector Express enables secure and flexible backup data encryption as a standard feature. Data Protector Express supports both software and hardware encryption. When the backup target device has a data encryption capability this should be used for the best performance. When the target backup device does not have an encryption capability, the Data Protector Express software encryption is used to write encrypted backup data to the device. Data encryption is specified as part of the backup job (Figure 6). The user does not need to understand encryption algorithms or manage encryption keys. This is all managed transparently by Data Protector Express. For ease of operation, Data Protector Express generates a secure encryption key using a user supplied passphrase as one of the inputs. This is either passed to an encryptioncapable backup device or passed to the Data Protector Express encryption algorithms. Figure 6. The Encryption/Compression screen of a job s properties is used to specify the encryption settings 7

Managing the passphrase is a critical when using backup data encryption. The protected data may need to be recovered months or years in the future so passphrases must be kept securely. For the best security, the user should store passphrases in a secure place and not on the computer running Data Protector Express. If the user is unable to supply the passphrase when requested to do so, neither the user nor HP Support will be able to access the encrypted data. The passphrases are specific to the media or media set and created by the first job to use the media or media set. When working in the Data Protector Express Storage Domain where the media was created, the passphrase is not required to access data on the media. It is assumed that the Administrator controls access to the Data Protector Express Storage domain with user permissions. Disk-to-disk (D2D) backup and recovery Backup and recovery to/from disk offers some advantages over tape backup and is increasingly used in conjunction with tape backup. As well as extensive tape device support, Data Protector Express allows organizations to easily realize the benefits of backup to disk. A standard feature of Data Protector Express is the capability for disk-to-disk (D2D) backup. There are three ways that Data Protector Express supports D2D backup: to any available, network accessible disk. This disk is managed by Data Protector Express and presented to the user as a Virtual Library that has the features of a generic tape library. Backup to disk backup appliances such as the HP D2D Backup System. Backup to portable disks or disk devices with removable media, such as the HP RDX Removable Disk System (this is described in a later section). Using available, network accessible disk for D2D backup and recovery is an economic way to implement disk based backup. However, care should be taken that the disk is reliable enough to serve as a backup target. Once configured, the result is a Data Protector Express-enabled Virtual Library backed by the designated disk. The Virtual Library is created with one or more virtual tape drives and one or more virtual cartridges (Figure 7). It is then used as a backup device in the same way as a physical tape device. Figure 7. Creating a Virtual Library uses one or more available disk volumes and emulates a generic tape library. Using a disk backup appliance does not require any setup in Data Protector Express. The appliance is auto discovered and immediately available as a backup target. 8

Multi-tier backup and recovery with the Disk-to-Any-to-Any (D2Any2Any) option Multi-tier backup is increasingly used to combine the benefits of different media types and to increase data protection. Standard (two tier) backup copies protected data to backup media. An additional layer of media (tertiary media) can be used to make an additional copy of the data. This additional (tertiary) copy may be kept longer than the backup data and/or stored in a different location. A common use of multi-tier backup is to implement a disk-to-disk-to-tape (D2D2T) backup and recovery process because there is often still a requirement to protect back up data on disk from possible disk failure, virus attack or to archive it. When the protected data is backed up to disk using a Data Protector Express Virtual Library the D2Any2Any option allows you to automate the movement of backup data from the Virtual Library to tape or other media using pre-defined criteria (Figure 8a). These criteria, specified for the entire Virtual Library, are time or capacity based, although there is logic to prevent the allocated disk space from filling completely. When backing up to media other than a Data Protector Express Virtual Library, the Data Protector Express D2Any2Any option allows multi-tier backup to be specified by backup job. This feature can use any supported device as the backup target and any supported device as the move/copy destination. Typically, the D2Any2Any option is used with a backup job that is run according to a rotation scheme. In this case, it provides flexibility for the duplication of some or all of the media to provide an additional level of protection. For example, it allows the automatic copying a weekly backup made to a Virtual Tape Library to a (tertiary) tape device for off site storage. When used without a rotation, the D2Any2Any option copy policy provides a simple yet powerful way for users to duplicate media. With the D2Any2Any option installed, the copy policy is a property of the backup job. It is configured when the backup job is created or it can be added to an existing backup job. If a rotation scheme has been created for the backup job, the copy policy applies for all instances of a rotation. One simple properties page (Figure 8b) allows the target device, selection of media rotations to be copied, number of copies and other parameters to be configured. Once configured the copy job will run automatically. The D2Any2Any option is installed once for the Data Protector Express Storage Domain regardless of how many machines are in the Storage Domain and regardless of how many jobs or Virtual Libraries are enabled with this feature. Backup and recovery for the complete network Data Protector Express reliably protects file servers and application servers. When the Data Protector Express Backup Server is installed the Data Protector Express Storage Domain is created. All machines that are protected join the Data Protector Express Storage Domain. To join a machine to a Data Protector Express Storage Domain the Data Protector Express software is installed and a Data Protector Express Network Server license added. The protection of all machines in the Data Protector Express Storage Domain is centrally managed and executed by local or network backup. Data Protector Express 4.0 does not require any additional licenses for machines to host backup and recovery devices; act as media servers. The Data Protector Express Backup Server license includes the capability to centrally back up an unlimited number of Windows desktop machines. Each time the protected desktop machine logs on to the network, it can be backed up, using a manual or scheduled backup, for protection. It the Windows desktop machine is to be protected by backup to a local tape device it requires a Data Protector Express Network Server license. 9

Figure 8a. The D2Any2Any option enables the automatic movement of data backed up data to disk (Data Protector Express Virtual Library) to tape or other media for added protection. Figure 8b. The properties page for a backup job with the D2Any2Any option installed allow a copy policy to be applied to the backup data that will automatically run after the backup job has completed. 10

For network backup, Data Protector Express has push technology to improve performance by preprocessing data locally to allow it to be efficiently sent over the network from the source machine, rather than having to be pulled or requested centrally by the Data Protector Express Backup Server. Online file server and application server backup For Windows file servers, Data Protector Express supports the Microsoft Windows Volume Shadow Services (VSS). This provides the capability to back up and verify open files. For the two most popular Microsoft business applications, Exchange and SQL Server, the Data Protector Express Application Online Agent enables backup without stopping operations to take the application offline. One Data Protector Express Application Online Agent license is required per application per machine. Microsoft Exchange protection Data Protector Express provides comprehensive protection for the Microsoft Exchange Server and the Microsoft Exchange databases so that any major or minor disaster can be quickly recovered. The Data Protector Application Online Agent allows the Microsoft Exchange Server administrator to perform full, differential, and incremental backups of the Exchange database and associated log files with the Exchange Server online. This allows the Exchange database to be restored in the event of a disaster and then appropriate log files applied. In the event of a more severe disaster, a system-level recovery is possible, followed by restoration of the Microsoft Exchange Server. SQL Server protection Data Protector Express also provides comprehensive protection for Microsoft SQL Server so that any major or minor disaster can be quickly recovered. The Data Protector Express Application Online Agent allows the SQL Server administrator to perform full, differential, and incremental backups of the Microsoft SQL Server storage groups. Special procedures are included for the protection of the inbuilt databases including particularly the SQL Server Master Database. Data Protector Express is also designed to protect the SQL Server log files. All included utilities, such as DUMP, remain available and should be used in parallel with the Data Protector Express SQL Server Agent. In the event of a disaster, the SQL Server database is restored and then transaction logs applied as appropriate. Bare Metal Disaster Recovery (BMDR) for fast restart of operations The Data Protector Express Bare Metal Disaster Recovery (BMDR) option delivers fast and automated recovery of systems and information following a serious disaster. After a serious incident there will be many things to do to get the organization operational again. The Data Protector Express BMDR capability makes it simple to get your servers operational again. It is a fast and robust method to automate the rebuild of your new or repaired servers with the operating systems and applications and then to reload the data. Unlike some other disaster recovery products, the Data Protector Express BMDR option will recover the server from completely new hardware (bare metal). However, replacement hardware or components should be the same as the original hardware or components. Other recovery products require you to re-install the operating system before recovering the server, whereas Data Protector Express only requires that you create a boot CD/DVD, on one of the Data Protector Express Media Servers, to execute the recovery. The smart Data Protector Express BMDR option simply requires you to follow the on-screen prompts to recover your server in the minimum time. There is no need to install or configure anything first. With HP tape drives the process is further simplified, as support for HP One-Button Disaster Recovery (OBDR) is provided and any full backup tape can be disaster recovery media. When doing full backups to HP tape dives, the necessary recovery information is automatically created and stored on the tape to enable OBDR-based recovery. Figure 9 shows how quickly and easily the Data Protector Express BMDR option makes rebuilding and recovering a server after a disaster. 11

All Data Protector Express components run on all supported operating systems. Data Protector Express and its options are all licensed and priced the same regardless of operating system or data capacity. This makes Data Protector Express extremely easy to manage and license in organizations with multiple operating systems. It also means that, for example, a Windows operating system does not have to be introduced into a pure Linux environment to run the backup and recovery application. Native format or common format data streams Windows, Linux, and NetWare each use different data formats. Data Protector Express can back up data in these native operating system formats (the default setting) or a common data format. Typically the native data formats are used for backup because this provides fastest performance and includes embedded information such as security information. If it is planned to share data between different operating systems, then the native data stream format can be replaced with a common Data Protector Express data format. This allows, for example, data from a NetWare machine to be backed up then restored to a Linux machine in a readable format. Device support When Data Protector Express starts, or when a device is added or removed, Data Protector Express scans for devices with which it can communicate. This automated device discovery makes managing devices easy. Data Protector Express supports disk, tape, virtual tape, CD/DVD and other removal media devices for backup and recovery. The disk can be any disk resource visible on the network or a disk backup appliance. General purpose disk is managed for backup by Data Protector Express as a Virtual Library as previously described. The tape support includes HP tape drives, HP tape autoloaders and HP tape libraries as well as third-party tape products. 12

Data Protector Express defines removable devices as either removable cartridge devices or removable disk devices. Each type of removable device is managed slightly differently. These removable devices are supported on Microsoft Windows and Linux platforms. Neither type of removable device should be used for disaster recovery. A removable cartridge device, such as a HP RDX Removable Disk System, is a fixed drive that can write to multiple removable cartridges. These are managed similarly to tape cartridges. A removable disk device, such as a memory stick, does not have a removable cartridge. They are detected like regular disk devices and used by Data Protector Express as regular disk devices. The choice of backup media depends upon several factors and should be made according to organizational need. Data Protector Express allows multiple media types to be used and for these media types to be used in combination. Note that devices such as virtual tape libraries and removable devices have some characteristics of disk and tape. Support and services All components of Data Protector Express have, as standard, phone-in support service for the user and rights to fixes, upgrades, and new versions for 12 months. This standard service and support can be upgraded and/or extended as your requirements dictate. The HP Care Packs offer upgraded service levels to extend and expand your standard Data Protector Express warranty with easy-to-buy, easy-to-use support packages that help you make the most of your investment in HP Data Protector Express. They let you choose the support levels that meet your business requirements, from business hours to 24 x 7. Additionally, HP Care Pack Services help you plan and manage total cost of ownership. HP Care Pack support extensions and upgrades can be purchased for HP Data Protector Express to cost effectively upgrade or extend your warranty. HP Care Pack Services for HP Data Protector Express are available when the one-year warranty included with Data Protector Express has expired and, at a lower cost, at the time of purchase of HP Data Protector Express. 13

Glossary Backup Server The starting point for all Data Protector Express installations. The minimum required to protect a machine or machines. The Backup Server manages the Data Protector Express Storage Domain and by default contains the Data Protector Express catalog. Bare Metal Disaster Recovery The process of rebuilding a new computer from scratch ( bare metal ) after a major failure. Traditionally this required reinstalling the operating system, reloading applications and then restoring data and settings. Data Protector Express automates this process. Catalog The database required to run Data Protector Express. The information stored includes jobs and job history, device information, media and licensing key details. The Data Protector Express catalog, by default, runs on the Backup Server and stores information for the Storage Domain. Media server A media server is a machine that manages the reading and writing of data to backup devices. The Data Protector Express Backup Server is the first media server in the Storage Domain. Every machine that has a Network Server Agent installed can act as a media server. Network Server Agent This is required for a machine to join the Data Protector Express Storage Domain. Once installed it allows a LAN-connected server to be backed up over the network and protection centrally managed. The Network Server Agent also allows the machine to host a backup device act as a media server for local or network backup. Storage Domain The Data Protector Express Storage Domain comprises the Data Protector Express Backup Server, protected machines, backup devices, backup media and the Data Protector Express catalog. There is one Storage Domain per Data Protector Express catalog, and one Data Protector Express catalog per Storage Domain. The Backup Server manages the catalog of Storage Domain wide information. The concept of the Data Protector Express Storage Domain is important to understanding Data Protector Express. In a Storage Domain, all machines and backup devices are known to all machines. Virtual Library A Data Protector Express Virtual Library is created on a local hard disk, on a network disk or a combination of both. The Virtual Library emulates the geometry of a generic tape library to allow easy D2D backup and recovery. It is configured with any number of drives and slots. Once created, it is used as a physical tape library. The one difference is that copy polices enabled with the D2Any2Any option are set for the Virtual Library not the job backing up to the Virtual Library. Virtual Tape Library (VTL) A VTL is a disk-based hardware device that presents itself as a tape drive or tape library. Data Protector Express manages, uses and license the VTL in the same way as the physical tape device that the VTL emulates. 14
