2 THE NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF MALAYSIA Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) was established on 18th May This academic institution was born from the aspiration of the people to uphold the Malay language as the national language as well as the language of the knowledge. UKM has grown rapidly and now has 13 faculties, 13 research institutes of excellence in education, and two commercial entities which are UKM Holdings, Sdn. Bhd. and UKM Technology Sdn. Bhd. views, entrepreneurial spirit, and innovative thinking Future Leaders. Besides that, UKM is the only university in Malaysia that was listed in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World s Top 50 Under and ranked at the 20th place. Moving forward, UKM will continue its effort in developing future leaders and innovators who are brave and determined in challenging themselves and contributing towards mankind. UKM is one of the universities in Malaysia that received the status of Research University (RU) which has successfully attracted students from all around the world. UKM focuses on the quality of research and publication, innovative teaching and learning, internationalization and international benchmark, good governance, and also effective delivery of teaching and learning. 27 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Requirements for admission to the Masters Degree programme: 1. Bachelor s Degree with a good Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) from the University or any higher learning institution recognised by the Senate; or 2. Degree in Medical or Dentistry from the University or any higher learning institution or an equivalent degree thereto from any higher learning institution recognised by the Senate; or 3. Other qualifications recognised by the Senate obtained through Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) or through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL); and 4. Fulfills other requirements prescribed by the programme (where applicable). A person who wishes to apply for admission to the Doctorate programme shall possess the following qualification: 1. Masters Degree from the University or any higher learning institution recognised by the Senate; or 2. Other qualifications equivalent to a Masters Degree or having other qualifications with experience recognised by the Senate; or 3. A candidate who is currently attending a full time Masters programme under paragraph 6(1) (a) in the University and is certified by the Faculty Graduate Studies Committee/Centre for Graduate Management to convert his status to a Doctorate programme with the approval of Dean of the Faculty/Director of the Institute; or 4. Bachelor s Degree with excellent results from the University or any higher learning institution recognised by the Senate; or 5. Other qualifications recognised by the Senate obtained through Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) or through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL); and 6. Fulfills other requirements prescribed by the programme (where applicable). ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS An international candidate is required to fulfill the English Language proficiency requirements as follows: 1. Obtained TOEFL (550) or IELTS (5.5) results which fulfill the score or minimum band requirements prescribed by the programme; or 2. For certain programmes, a candidate is required to sit for an English Proficiency Placement Test (EPPT) and if he fails to achieve the level specified by the programme, the candidate is required to attend and pass the English Proficiency Module (EPM) in a maximum period of two (2) semesters before he is allowed to register for the study programme. The candidate shall register as a Non Graduating Student. For an international candidate who will be writing his thesis/dissertation in the Malay/Arabic languages, he may be exempted from the requirements stated in paragraph (1)(a), but the candidate shall sit for the English Proficiency Placement Test (EPPT) and if he fails to obtain the level specified by the programme, the candidate is required to attend and pass the English Proficiency Module (EPM). An international candidate who has the academic qualifications obtained from any local universities recognised by the Senate may be exempted from the requirements stated in paragraph (1)(a), but the candidate shall sit for the English Proficiency Placement Test (EPPT) and if he fails to obtain the level specified by the programme, he is required to attend and pass the English Proficiency Module (EPM). The Faculty/Institute may grant exemption to the requirements specified in subregulation (1) for the international candidate who is originally from a country where the English Language is the official language or has the academic qualifications obtained from any higher learning institution which uses the English Language as the medium of instruction.
