4 A Word From Our National Commander I would like to thank you for your interest in the National Chaplains Association (NCA). The NCA has been in existence since 1890 as a national certifying body for Christian Chaplains that serves in: need the love of Jesus. Children s Homes; Police Departments; Fire Departments; Community Outreach Centers, and; Anywhere there are hurting people that The NCA is dedicated to practical Christianity, where the Bible is the main textbook of life and ministry. We firmly believe that Jesus is the ultimate and only complete solution to the problems of life. To this end, the NCA has Chaplains that are active in every area of ministry imaginable. I encourage you to prayerfully read over this brochure. If the Holy Spirit is touching your heart to reach out and make a difference in the lives of hurting people, I encourage you to join the NCA team of Chaplains nationwide! 5 The Purpose of the NCA The NCA is to serve as a national certifying body for aspirants of the ministry as Christian Chaplains. The NCA recognizes that chaplains serve in many fields of ministry not normally associated with denominational ministers (such as Pastors and Evangelists). Therefore, the NCA is a transdenominational organization that serves the entire Body of Christ. It is not the intent of the NCA to compete with any denomination or Church group. Rather, it is our desire to work with them to promote ministry to those that traditional churches sometimes overlook. The NCA Statement of Faith W e believe. The Holy Scriptures as originally given by God, divinely inspired, inerrant, entirely trustworthy, and the only supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct. The Trinitarian God of the Bible, one in substance, manifest in three persons: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. God the Father, the first person of the Divine Trinity, is infinite Spirit sovereign, eternal, unchangeable in all His attributes. He is worthy of honor, adoration, and obedience. The Lord Jesus Christ, God manifest in the flesh, His virgin birth, His sinless life, His divine miracles, His vicarious death on the cross, His bodily resurrection from the dead and His personal return in power and glory. The Holy Spirit, by whose filling and indwelling the believer is enabled to live a holy life, to witness and work for the Lord Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit gives spiritual gifts to all believers; however, the manifestation of any particular gift is not required as evidence of salvation. The salvation of lost and sinful man through the shed blood of the Lord Jesus Christ by faith, apart from works, a free gift of God s grace, and regeneration by the Holy Spirit. That the work completed at Calvary by our Lord provides a salvation that touches humanity: spirit, soul and body. The new birth for the spirit, a sound mind for the soul and healing for the body. The Gifts of the Holy Spirit, which are given to the Church to touch a sinsick world with the power of the Risen Savior. God's Business is Our Business 3

6 The Fruit of the Spirit, through which His abiding produces a Christ-like character in the life of the believer. Satan, who exists as a personal, malignant being who acts as a tempter and accuser, for whom the place of eternal punishment was prepared, where all who die outside of Christ shall be confined in conscious torment for eternity. The unity of the Spirit of all true believers, the Church, the Body of Christ, which is commissioned by the Lord Jesus Christ to go into all the world and preach the Gospel. The personal return of the Lord Jesus Christ, the resurrection of both the saved and the lost, they that are saved unto the resurrection of eternal life and they that are lost unto the resurrection of eternal damnation. Credentials and Certification Licensed Chaplain Requirements to become a licensed chaplain with the NCA: 1. You must have a background check completed by your local police department. The report must be forward to the NCA Headquarters with your membership application. 2. You must have your fingerprints on file with the NCA. (This is a Federal requirement.) 3. You must complete the NCI Christian Chaplain Certification Program. 4. You must have three letters of recommendation for your Pastor, denomination or Church group and other ministers in your area. Ordained Chaplain Requirements to become an ordained chaplain with the NCA: 1. You must have a background check completed by your local police department. The report must be forward to the NCA Headquarters with your membership application. 2. You must have your fingerprints on file with the NCA. (This is a Federal requirement.) 7 3. You must complete the NCI Christian Chaplain Certification Program. 4. Must have served as a Licensed Chaplain for a minimum of two (2) years. [This requirement can be waived if you are already an ordained minister with a recognized denomination or Church group.] 5. You must have three letters of recommendation for your Pastor, denomination or Church group and other ministers in your area. Certification Certification is given after completion of the NCI Christian Chaplain Certification Program. The level of certification is based upon your level of education for the ministry. [Note: secular degrees are not considered in the certification process. Only degrees in theology, biblical studies, biblical counseling, divinity, theology or other ministry related field.] No Ministerial Degree: Certified Christian Chaplain Bachelor Degree: Certified Christian Chaplain Advanced Masters Degree: Certified Christian Chaplain Fellow Doctoral Degree: Certified Christian Chaplain Diplomate Rank Officer rank can be awarded by the NCA. Rank is earned through years of service and exceptional dedication to the ministry as a Chaplain. Rank is also awarded for various volunteer posts within the NCA. Rank within the NCA is to show maturity, dedication and excellence as a proven Christian Chaplain within our association. Rank is never awarded for monetary gifts of any kind to the NCA. 8 National Board of Chaplains Chaplain Doyle E. Varvel, D.Min. General, National Commander Chap. Varvel has served as the National Commander of the National Chaplains Association since He has 40 years experience in chaplaincy working with Children s Homes, Police and Fire Departments. He is a member of the International Chiefs of Police and served on a special committee for the organization. Chaplain Michael K. Lake, Th.D., D.R.E., D.Psy. General, National Deputy Commander & National Educational Supervisor Chap. Lake has served with the NCA since He is the President and Founder of Biblical Life College & Seminary (which the National Chaplains Institute is a division). He has served as an educational consultant for a wide variety of Christian organizations worldwide. He is listed in the U.S. Registry s Who s Who Among Outstanding Americans, Sterling s Who s Who Executive Edition, Nationwide Register s Who s Who in Executives and Business, and Who s Who Among American Teachers for his accomplishments in education. 10 The Purpose of NCI NCI was founded under Biblical Life College and Seminary (BLCS) to provide training specific to the ministry of the Christian Chaplain. Thus all courses offered through NCI do not deal with theology, doctrine or other areas of ministerial preparation that should be addressed by the colleges representing the student s denomination or church group. All credits earned through NCI can be transferred into a degree program through BLCS, if the student so desires. Accreditation & Memberships Our BLCS is a member of and its programs accredited by: American Accrediting Association of Theological Institutions P. O. Box 8939 Rocky Mount, NC Accrediting Commission International 5260 Paylor Lane Sarasota, FL These Christian associations have not applied for recognition from the U.S. Department of Education (USDOE) nor by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). (Note: The primary purpose of U.S. DOE approval is for participation in the Guaranteed Student Loan Program and the gaining of Federal funding.) It is the conviction of these associations and all member schools that Christian schools which maintain the separation of Church and State should not participate in these programs. The participation with secular agencies would bring Christian education under secular control. God's Business is Our Business 8

11 A Final Note Regarding Accreditation If your sole purpose for seeking an education is for the Gospel Ministry or a related field with Christian ministry, secular accreditation is not necessary or required. All Christian churches accept quality Christian education regardless of which accrediting group (if any) a school is with. If you are studying for other than ministry, to become a business administrator, engineer, lawyer, etc., make sure that the school you are going to study with belongs to a regional (or national) accrediting association that is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. In secular education, this type of accreditation is essential. For education of those in Christian service, secular accreditation does nothing for Christian education other than making the tuition beyond the reach of most ministers. 12 Notice of Nondiscriminatory Policy to Students BLCS admits students of any race, national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, and programs made available to the students of the school. BLCS does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national or ethnic origin. It is our conviction that there is no place for any type of racial prejudice in the Body of Christ! Therefore, book & tape fees are added to the overall cost of the program. Refund Policy No refund will be made on application fees. Refund of tuition is as follows: a. From 1 to 15 days 100% b. From 16 to 30 days 80% c. From 30 to 45 days 60% d. After 45 days no refund is given A student must notify the Registrar s Office of his intention to withdraw in writing. 14 Course Descriptions Volunteer Police Chaplain 3 SCHS This course takes the student step-by-step through the process of establishing a volunteer police chaplain program in a local police station. Great detail is provided to both the type of ministry expected of a chaplain and illustrations of situations a police chaplain will face in the line of duty. Crisis Counseling 3 SCHS This course provides a detailed model and various methods used in crisis counseling from a pastoral/chaplain perspective. Resources: Crisis Counseling by H. Norman Wright. Teleios Therapy Program 3 SCHS The Teleios Therapy Program provides a study of temperament, personality, character and spirituality and shows the student how to bridge the gap from where he is to where God wants him to be. This course provides Biblical psychometric testing instruments that can be used without royalties in ministry. Resources: Bridging the Gap Design by Dr. Gary Jung. Published by Biblical Life Publishing. Workbook, Exam, eight audio lectures, master copies of all forms and instruments, and a license from ABLE to reproduce the forms and instruments for life (for personal use in ministry only). 15 Certificates and Certification At the completion of each of the three courses in the program, a handsome 8 1/2 x 11 Certification of Completion will be issued by NCI. The level of certification granted is based upon the academic ministerial education of the student. The levels are given below: No Ministerial Degree: Certified Christian Chaplain Bachelor Degree (Ministerial): Certified Christian Chaplain Advanced Masters Degree (Ministerial): Certified Christian Chaplain Fellow Doctoral Degree (Ministerial): Certified Christian Chaplain Diplomate Transfer of Credits Completed in the Program Credits completed in the NCI program are transferable into Biblical Life College & Seminary for the completion of a degree program. BLCS can continue to serve your educational needs through the doctoral level through nontraditional education.
