What is An environment for large-scale, close-to-real experimentation of ideas and validation of prototypes A lab for operators, RNP and the industry An environment for meaningful collaborations Ethernet over WDM network Fibers lent by operators Validated prototypes used to upgrade the network

GIGA Experimental Network First large-scale experimental network in SA 800km total fiber span over 7 cities in 2 states (SP, RJ) 66 labs from 26 institutions connected (fiber to the lab) at 1 and 10 Gbps e2e dynamic (VLAN) multidomain circuits for L2 and above on demand experiments Manually provisioned wavelengths for physical layer experimentation

Optical Communications and Networking WDM-PON and Low-power optical amplification Dynamically reconfigurable WDM network elements and control plane Indoor/home optical infrastructure Optical Performance Monitoring Avanced optical modulation format Optical Packet Switching

IP Networking and Future Internet OpenFlow switches and ROADMs Network Virtualization Software-Defined Networking (SDN) Future Internet Architectures

Telecommunications Services TeleMedicine e Teleducation Regional TV content cataloging and sharing 4K stereoscopic streaming

Project GIGA... GIGA Experimental Network Critical Analysis

Lessons Learned Very important and valuable tool......to gain insights and know-how...to give credibility and confidence on the results and prototypes

Lessons Learned Network is pretty stable, but problems do occur Typically fiber cuts Low in the priority list of the operator; some don t even know there is a project called GIGA which uses their fibers Low utilization of the network to experimentations same seen in the Kyatera experimental network Most of the traffic generated by the same few users Lack of attractiveness to much innovation-oriented? Lack of experimentation culture? Lack of competence? Time to obtain publishable results?

Business Model Optical infrastructure and fibers lent by operators 5-year agreements some expired and need renewal Network equipment acquired in the first phase of the project Need upgrade in terms of functionality No budget in the current phase (II) to do upgrades No charge whatsoever on the use of the GIGA network Use limited to R&D-related non-production traffic Operations team maintained with project s (limited) budget

Perspectives Phase II ends officially in Abril 2012, but budget should allow it to go until end of 2012 Continuation unclear Do we want the testbed to live? Renewal of fiber agreements with operators What if they refuse it? Possibility of swapping of capacities with other operators involving RNP Possibility of using fibers from the Kyatera network?

Perspectives Projects FIBRE and INCT Web Sciences will need the connectivity provided by the GIGA network today What if the project (and the operations budget) ends? CPqD and RNP are discussing a project on Future Internet based on a model similar to GIGA s and on the GIGA network Possible to extend the GIGA network over RNP s backbone, reaching all the states of Brazil RNP should take over the entire GIGA network? This would be aligned with RNP s goal and RNP would have the means to maintain and upgrade the GIGA network
